Hew’s wife, Shannon Lew told FMT he was released from police custody at 12.55pm.
Lew also said Hew had finally broken his fast by having a bowl of curry mee, upon her insistence.
Hew, who goes by the nickname “Superman”, had earlier vowed to go on a hunger strike following his arrest.
Yesterday, police sent Hew to the hospital for a check-up following his hunger strike. He was given a clean bill of health and sent back to the police lock-up.

Remanded ‘Superman’ admitted to hospital
Former DAP member Hew Kuan Yau has been admitted to Kulai Hospital today.
This was after he launched a three-day hunger strike after he was arrested and remanded.
Hew’s lawyer Chan Kheng Fai confirmed he has been hospitalised.
Police had sent Hew, or better known as “Superman”, to hospital and would send him back to Kulai police station at 4pm.
However, Chan was uncertain whether Hew was sent for medical check-up due to his hunger strike or for other reasons.
“The police only stated that Hew was sent to hospital for medical check-up in accordance with normal procedure.
“However, the exact reason is unknown at the moment, we would know it after meeting Hew,” Chan told Malaysiakini.

Former DAP member Hew Kuan Yau, or better known as “Superman”, has been remanded for four days over his Facebook post against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor.
Hew’s lawyer Chan Kheng Fai said his client was brought to the Kulai district police headquarters at 4.30am this morning, after he was arrested in Penang yesterday.
“The Kulai magistrate granted the police a four-day remand, which will end on Friday,” he told Malaysiakini.
According to Chan, his client has been on a hunger strike since yesterday.
He said the remand period was given on the grounds that the police needed time to record Hew’s statement, and to seek necessary information from a telecommunications company.
“The police would also have to visit Hew’s house to collect relevant evidence,” he added.

Cops nab ‘Superman’ Hew over Facebook insult against PM, Rosmah
KUALA LUMPUR, March 20 — A former DAP member known by his moniker “Superman” was arrested today, reportedly over his Facebook post insulting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.
News portal Free Malaysia Today reported Hew Kuan Yau was picked up by three plainclothes policemen at the Comic Cultural Museum in Komtar, Penang earlier this afternoon and taken to the Patani Road district police station.
“The policemen then came to his office, saying a person in Johor had lodged a police report against his FB post,” the museum manager Raymond Chong was quoted saying, adding that Hew was a curator there.
According to the report, Hew was represented by lawyer and Seri Delima assemblyman RSN Rayer who said his client will be taken to Johor Jaya where the complaint was made later tonight, to be investigated under the Communication and Multimedia Act (CMA)1998.
“Tomorrow morning, Hew will be then brought to the Johor Bahru Magistrate’s Court for a remand order application.
“They did not show us which offending posting was under investigation. We have only learnt that the originating report was made in Kulai, Johor,” Rayer was quoted saying.
According to the news report, Hew had made disparaging comparisons against Najib and Rosmah in a March 13 posting to the recent Disney movie remake of Beauty and The Beast.

‘Superman’ Hew’s racial twist to Olympic success slammed
Former DAP man suggests, following the Malaysian badminton mixed doubles pair’s entry into the finals, that Malaysia cannot win medals without the Chinese.

PETALING JAYA: Firebrand Hew Kuan Yau, formerly of the DAP, has waded into controversy again.
This time it is over the achievement of national badminton mixed doubles pair Goh Liu Ying and Chan Peng Soon in the Rio Olympics. The duo have made it to the tournament’s finals.
In a Facebook posting last night, Hew placed a caricature of Goh and Chan accompanied by text in Mandarin which reads : “Listen carefully Umno, if the Chinese really ‘balik’ China then Malaysia will ‘eat banana’ (go back empty handed) in the Olympics.”
This prompted blogger Lim Sian See to share the offensive post on his own Facebook page, calling Hew a “chauvinist”.
Lim had also put up a screenshot of Hew “scolding” one of his followers for pointing out that the Olympic win was a Malaysian effort and there was no need to give it a racial tinge, by calling the latter stupid.
A netizen asked why Hew was rooting for the Malaysian pair as he was a staunch supporter of China.
Another netizen said that Hew was probably unaware that Azizulhasni Awang and Pandelela Rinong, who won bronze and silver medals in the men’s track cycling and diving events, respectively, were not of Chinese descent.
