Magistrate’s Court denies application by police, Namewee to be released at 5pm today with expiry of previous four-day remand order.

GEORGE TOWN: Controversial rapper and Malaysian YouTube sensation Namewee is a free man after police failed to extend his remand order at the Magistrate’s Court here.

Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, was remanded for the past four days to be investigated for “defiling a place of worship with intention to insult the religion”.

Earlier, he was taken to the George Town courthouse at 8.30am, with his hands cuffed behind his back and was led in by two police officers.

After the decision was made at 12.10pm, Namewee’s lawyer, T Tharuma, told reporters that Assistant Court Registrar Ahmad Tajudin Zaini denied the application by the police to extend the remand.

Tharuma said Tajudin had ordered for Namewee to be released immediately. However, the rapper was instead taken away by police in a marked Proton Preve car.

Nothing to fear from police, say Taiwan hip-hop group Jiu Yi Yi

Taiwanese Hip-Hop group Jiu Yi Yi, which performed with local rapper Namewee in his controversial music video, will cooperate fully with the Malaysian police in their investigation.

The manager for Jiu Yi Yi, in speaking to Taiwanese newspaper Apple Daily, revealed that they only came to know about this after receiving a call from a reporter.

“Until now, we have not received any notice on this matter. But if there is a need for Jiu Yi Yi’s assistance in this investigation, we are willing to cooperate,” he said.

The manager believes that the official version of the music video ‘Oh My God’, which was shot by Namewee and Jiu Yi Yi, did not have any intention to insult any religion.

Taiwan hip hop group Jiu Yi Yi shocked at Namewee’s arrest

Jiu Yi Yi, the Taiwanese Hip-Hop group which performed with Namewee in his controversial music video which purportedly insulted religious sensitivities of some Malaysians, expressed shock over the local rapper’s arrest on Sunday.

“We were shocked when we heard the news. We did not expect it to become a serious issue. We went to those places for music video shooting under the director’s instructions,” said the manager of the Taiwanese hip hop group.

The manager spoke to Taiwanese newspaper Apple Daily, the story also appearing in the Chinese daily’s online version.

Namewee had contended that the leaked version was not the finished version.

“After the first version of MV was out, we did cut some inappropriate scenes.

“We don’t know who leaked it out. Perhaps we need to investigate this. We respect the local culture,” said the group’s manager in the article.

When asked about the possible involvement of Jiu Yi Yi in the case which saw Namewee arrested, the manager said that they were unsure.

‘It may involve us, it may not. But we are very worried about Namewee.

Interpol’s help sought to locate singers in Namewee’s video clip

The Penang police will ask Bukit Aman to request for assistance from Interpol to locate the three men who sang with Namewee in a video clip which allegedly insulted Islam to assist investigation.

Penang police chief Abdul Ghafar Rajab said based on information obtained from Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, 33, the three men are Taiwanese singers and are residing in Taiwan.

“Investigation is on-going and we will get assistance from Interpol to find the three men to record their statements.

“So far, police have recorded statement from seven people,” he told reporters after a dinner and opening of a football championship match to vie for the Inspector-General of Police trophy by Bukit Aman director (management) Zulkifli Abdullah in George Town last night.

Abdul Ghafar said the police would also hold a meeting with the Penang Islamic Religious Department (JAIPP) to discuss the issue.

Namewee remanded over ‘Oh My God’ music videozx

He was brought to Penang late last night and taken to the Penang courthouse this morning.

The singer-songwriter is being investigated under Section 295 of the Penal Code for defiling a place of worship with intention to insult the religion.

The section carries a jail term of up to two years, or a fine or both, upon conviction.

To be taken to Penang, remand order to be sought for investigations after reports of insulting Islam.

PETALING JAYA: Police arrested Namewee, the controversial rapper and video producer, at Kuala Lumpur International Airport this afternoon when he arrived home from abroad, Star Online reported.

He is to be taken to Penang for investigations about his music video entitled ‘Oh My God!’ which he produced for the Hungry Ghost Festival.

He is expected to be produced before a magistrate tomorrow for police to seek a remand order, according to George Town OCPD Mior Faridalathrash Wahid.

Namewee,  whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, had produced the ‘Oh My God!’ video  which surfaced on Youtube in late July. The four-minute clip features a Taiwanese band called Nine-One-One and was shot in places of worship in Penang.
