Singaporean family pleads not guilty to insulting Malaysian Immigration officer

PONTIAN: A single mother and her two teenage children, all Singaporeans, pleaded not guilty to obstructing the duty of an Immigration Department officer in a special court at the Pekan Nenas Immigration Depot here.
Freelance worker Quek Chin Fern, 42, her son Miguel Lim, 19 and daughter Cheryl Isabella Lim, 18, were alleged to have carried out the offence at a car exit lane in the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex at about 3.30pm on Aug 12.
The trio were charged under Section 56(1)(g) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155), read out together under Section 34 of the Penal Code and punishable under Section 56(1)(aa) of the same act.
All three claimed trial to the charge that was read out to them before judge Salawati Djambari here on Monday.

She was told to wind down the rear tinted windows of her car but she allegedly refused to comply.
When she was told to step out of her car with her two teenage children, the Singaporean woman is said to have made a vulgar hand gesture at the Malaysian immigration officer.
She also allegedly shouted vulgarities while pressing the car horn repeatedly.
For doing so, the 42-year-old woman and her children have been detained at the Johor Baru checkpoint.
The incident happened at the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex at 3.30pm last Friday.
The three had claimed that the immigration officer allegedly asked them for a bribe, which they refused.

The three are being investigated under Section 56(1) (g) of the Immigration Act, which carries a maximum of RM10,000 (S$3,350) fine or imprisonment not exceeding five years or both.
News about the arrests has been widely spread via Facebook with pictures of the family in handcuffs and personal details online.
It is learnt that the two children are studying in a private college in Johor Baru.

A Singapore family detained for abusing Malaysian officer

The woman, in her 40s, and her two children, aged 18 and 19, were detained for allegedly hurling abuses and accusations, and showing obscene gestures against the immigration officer, who wanted to carry out a routine inspection of their car.

Johor immigration director Rohaizi Bahari said his department had nothing to hide and even had visits from the Singapore consulate officers, who wanted to meet with the suspects.
He said the department investigation revealed that its officer did not ask for any bribe as alleged by the suspects.
“It is an offence to hurl abuse at immigration officers who were merely observing procedures during checks,” he said when confirming the case.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — A Singaporean family has been arrested and detained for 14 days for a probe into their alleged verbal abuse against an Immigration Department officer from Malaysia during a border inspection.
Johor Immigration Department Datuk Rohaizi Bahari said the two-week remand of the Singaporean trio was to facilitate the investigations into the incident last week.
“It is an offence to hurl abuse at my men who are just following the procedures during checks,” he was quoted saying by local daily The Star.
“So far our investigation also showed that the officer did not ask for any bribe as alleged by the suspects,” he added.
Rohaizi said individuals dissatisfied with the officers under him could file a direct complaint to him.
