PKR sees a racist agenda in film segregation
‘Ola Bola and Jagat should be judged on artistic merit and to see a film only from the language point of view merely widens the gap between us’.
..

PETALING JAYA: PKR today lashed out at the 28th Malaysian Film Festival Awards (FFM28), saying that Chiu Keng Guan’s Ola Bola and Shanjhey Kumar Perumal’s Jagat should be judged solely on artistic merit and culture as well as the ability to discuss unity and not be based on language alone.
“To only see a film from the language point of view only widens the gap between us, when in fact it should be bringing us closer together.
“The FFM’s refusal to accept both films raises the question of whether or not the criteria used to determine the category of films preaches discrimination and anti-1Malaysia,” said PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil in a statement today.
PKR Youth’s Jestin Raj Savarimuthu shared Fahmi’s sentiments, describing the exclusion of the two movies as a “racist agenda” trying to cause division. Many parties have expressed their dissatisfaction with the exclusion.
“Both films have become so popular. It gives new life to Malaysians to maintain the spirit of Malaysia,” Jestin said in a statement.

Filmmaker slams Tony and Nazir for sudden ‘interest’ in films
Corporate leaders Tony Fernandes and Nazir Razak criticised for attacks on the film award nominations.

PETALING JAYA: Stick to fixing the services for AirAsia customers and loan services at CIMB, a filmmaker said today in response to criticism by corporate leaders Tony Fernandes and Nazir Razak.
Ahmad Ibrahim, or Mat London, said the two personalities had never been known to care about the development or problems of the local film industry.
However, Fernandes, boss of AirAsia Group, and Nazir, who is CIMB group chairman, had recently joined the bandwagon in criticising the nominations for the Malaysian Film Festival awards.
“All this while, these two have never cared about the development or the problems faced by our local film industry, in fact I have never seen them officially supporting to sponsor any film festivals, much less to sponsor FFM. But, when there is an issue like this, they are fast to join in and bash FFM,” said Ahmad in an interview published today by the Tabloid Seni website.
“When industry people ask for help from AirAsia and CIMB on film matters, they don’t entertain us,” he said. “There is no need to join in and heat up the situation. Fix what is in your place like the services for AirAsia customers and loan services at CIMB.”

Protesting racism, award-winning cinematographer pledges to return FMM trophies
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 6 — Cinematographer Mohd Noor Kassim is a man of action it seems.
Barely 24 hours after announcing his withdrawal from this year’s 28th Malaysian Film Festival (FFM28) for its alleged racism, the two-time Best Cinematographer winner pledged today to return his two trophies to the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) to signal his protest against its policy to segregate awards into Bahasa Malaysia and non-Bahasa Malaysia categories, including Best Picture.
“If Finas and PFM don’t take note about this before the festival and still persist with segregating films into Bahasa Malaysia and non-Bahasa Malaysia, I will return the two awards I won at FFM previously.
“I will return them on Monday in a programme with Finas. I will return both of them,” he told Malay broadcast channel Astro Awani in an interview.
PFM stands for the Malaysian Film Producers Association and together with Finas, has said the separation of award categories in the FFM was meant to uphold the national language in local films.
Mohd Noor had been nominated seven times previously and won two FFM awards for Best Cinematography for 2011’s Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa and 2009’s Setem.

Nazir Razak, Tony Fernandes thumbs up for Afdlin Shauki’s FFM boycott

Actor and filmmaker Afdlin Shauki’s boycott of the Festival Filem Malaysia 2016 over an alleged racism row has received the thumbs up from CIMB chairperson Nazir Abdul Razak and AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes.
Both took to their Instagram accounts to weigh in behind the actor’s decision to shun this year’s installment of the annual local film award ceremony over the move by national film corporation Finas to segregate major awards like best film by language.
The banker expressed his disappointment that ‘Ola-Bola’ which he said is one of his favourite films will not be able to compete in the best Malaysian film category, asking why the segregation was implemented.
He also praised Afdlin for his principled stand.
“Respect. I was aghast to hear that my favorite, Ola Bola, and others can’t compete for best Malaysian movie. Why the segregation? Change will only happen because individuals like Afdlin make a principled stand, well done!” wrote Nazir on Instagram.
His comment accompanied a screenshot of the Malaysiakini article detailing Afdlin drawing his moral line in the sand, which he posted on Instagram.

Actor Afdlin Shauki boycotts Festival Filem over language segregation
Prominent filmmaker Afdlin Shauki has announced he is boycotting the Festival Filem Malaysia 2016 (FFM) following yesterday’s outcry over segregation in the film awards.
“Sorry, this year I am boycotting FFM,” posted the multi-talented artist.
“When Malaysians regardless of race can truly be recognised for their creative works as Malaysian works.
“All the best to those who have been nominated. FFM committee good luck to you all too,” wrote Afdlin on his Facebook last night.
The disqualification of major Malaysian films of the year ‘Ola Bola’ and ‘Jagat’ from winning the best film category in the festival has riled many.
They were not nominated for ‘best film’ because the dialogue was not fully in Bahasa Malaysia, and were thus nominated for ‘Best Non-Bahasa Melayu Film’ instead.
“Why must the Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) and Film Producers Association Malaysia (PFM) create a racist category like ‘Non-Bahasa Melayu Films’?” Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Screenwriters Association (Penulis) Alfian Palermo commented yesterday.
