‘Fat Nick, the stupid Moslem convert prick’ accused of London beheading

Details have begun to emerge about the man arrested for the murder of a great grandmother beheaded in her back garden.

He was named locally as Nicholas Salvadore, a 25-year-old would-be cage fighter who is believed to be a Muslim convert, who had been living a few doors from 82-year-old Palmira Silva.

Salvadore was under arrest and under armed guard in hospital today after the events in a street in north London yesterday. Detectives say they have ruled out terrorism as a motive.

One told how he heard him shouting “the cats have stolen my lighter” as he hacked an animal to pieces.

Salvadore, who was known locally as “Fat Nick”, had been a friend of one of Mrs Silva’s neighbours and had been staying with them in recent weeks.

Lewis Young, 24, a tattoo artist, said he knew Salvadore at school and said he had been given the name “fat Nick” because of his huge frame.

Detective Chief Inspector John Sandlin acknowledged the nature of the murder could raise concerns that it was a terrorist act but downplayed that possibility.

“Whilst it is too early to speculate on what the motive behind this attack was I am confident, based on the information currently available to, that it was not terrorist related.”

One line of inquiry for detectives is understood to be that the man was inspired by recent footage of terrorists beheading two American journalists in Syria.

Some residents claimed last night that the suspect was a local man who had converted to Islam last year, but those claims could not be verified. Detectives said they had ruled out terrorism.

A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and is in custody. Detectives said there was no suggestion the killing had a terrorist motive.

The man is in hospital being treated for injuries suffered when he was arrested, police said.

A Taser was used during the arrest and a firearms officer is believed to have suffered a broken wrist.

Police said they were initially called to reports of a man armed with a knife and eyewitnesses said he had attacked an animal, possibly a cat or a dog.

Speaking at the scene of the attack, Cdr Simon Letchford said police had distracted the man while they evacuated nearby houses.

“Officers had to do everything they could to make other people safe and evacuate houses and put their lives on the line to make sure this individual did not cause further harm,” he said.

He said officers smashed windows to get people out of properties after the man was “cornered” in a house.

An 82-year-old woman was beheaded in a north London suburban garden by a man with a machete.

Palmira Silva, a widow and grandmother described as “such a sweet lady” by one neighbour, was killed outside her home in Edmonton in a random but frenzied assault by a 25-year-old.

Witnesses said they saw the man, wielding a foot-long blade, attack a passing vehicle and a cat before roaming back gardens looking for a victim.

Police believe he also tried to attack two people at another home in the street, but they were able to escape without injury.

The man was arrested after armed officers, who had distracted him to prevent further attacks, cornered him in a house and brought him down with a Taser stun gun. Some officers were injured.

London theatre ceiling collapse injures 88

The ceiling of a packed London theatre collapsed on the audience during a performance on Thursday, wounding 88 people including children and leaving terrified theatregoers covered in blood and rubble.

A sell-out crowd of around 720 people was in the Apollo Theatre watching “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time” when ornate masonry fell some five storeys onto their heads.

Rescuers commandeered three iconic red London double-decker buses to transport dozens of the wounded from the so-called “Theatreland” district to hospital.

Paramedics said they had taken seven “seriously injured” patients to hospital, although their wounds were not life-threatening, and treated 81 walking wounded. Emergency services said they did not believe there were any fatalities or people trapped.

The Apollo is one of London’s top theatres. It was built in 1901 and refurbished in 1932, and the balcony on the third tier is considered the steepest in London.

The current owner of the Apollo, Nimax Theatres, said the ceiling collapse was a “shocking and upsetting incident”.

A cache of weapons including a 950,000 volt stun gun was discovered in the car of a taxi driver who said he was on his way to kill the Prime Minister, a court has heard.

Police also found  hammers, kitchen knives, a machete, an unsheathed Samurai sword and masking tape in Irfaq Naz’s Vauxhall Astra, when he was stopped after going the wrong way down a north London street.

Officers later searched the 34-year-old’s home in Middlesbrough and found the Downing Street postcode and the names of other prominent political figures.

The taxi driver was detained under the Mental Health Act, and last month admitted possessing a prohibited weapon, three counts of possessing an offensive weapon, seven counts of having a bladed article and dangerous driving.

LONDON — Prosecutors say a taxi driver who claimed to be en route to kill the U.K. prime minister had a cache of weapons — including a machete, sword, stun gun and masking tape — when he was stopped by police.

Irfaq Naz was detained in July after driving the wrong way down a London street. A search of his car turned up weapons, and prosecutors say the 34-year-old told officers he was on his way to kill Prime Minister David Cameron.

Naz — who has been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic — has admitted to weapons offences.
