KUCHING: Artist Ernest Zacharevic has completed his latest mural at India Street here this Sunday and is considering doing two more murals in Sarawak’s capital city.
In his latest mural, Zacharevic introduced nine orang-utans to Kuching’s historic quarter.
Eight are painted to look as if they are being wheeled about in a wheelbarrow, while the ninth is a baby orang-utan swinging from a pipe.
Both were done in his usual interactive style, the first an actual wheel barrow sliced in half and secured to the wall, where the public can take selfies holding onto the handle.
For the baby orang-utan, Zacharevic painted over a nail on the wall, enabling people to ‘place’ items in its hand.
Within hours, hundreds of selfies with Zacharevic’s art were uploaded, with most calling the work cute and playful.

Fresh from his street art trips in Lithuania, Singapore and Johor, artist Ernest Zacharevic will debut his first solo art exhibition in Penang. Little is revealed about his latest art venture (except that it’s completely free and you can take lots of photos). Measuring from sneak peeks of recent snapshots, the exhibition will incorporate pre loved junks, discarded treasures and overlooked street items into works of art. The Hin Company Bus Depot venue is pretty discreet, so keep a close eye on landmark like Hotel Grand Continental. If you need a map, take a look here. You can also check out his instagram for a sneak preview.

Ernest Zacharevic turns rubbish into art
GEORGE TOWN, Jan 17 — What do an old broken cabinet, a wooden board, a battered ping pong bat, a pair of paint-splattered trousers, stacks of wooden drawers and an engine have in common?
These are the “rubbish” that famous street artist Ernest Zacharevic has turned into art installations at his solo art exhibition, aptly named “Art is rubbish/rubbish is art.”
Looking at the works on display, it is clear the young Lithuanian artist has managed to prove the point that there is beauty everywhere.
“I just want to emphasise the point that one man’s rubbish can be another man’s treasure which is why I chose this theme,” the soft-spoken artist said during a sneak preview of the exhibition yesterday.
It opens for public viewing tonight.

The Guardian picks ‘Little Children’
Popular attraction: A group of young adults checking out ‘Little Children On A Bicycle’ in George Town’s Armenian Street.
GEORGE TOWN: Other than its good food and rich heritage, Penang’s many murals are also fast gaining popularity among tourists from all over the world.
One of these art pieces was featured in a recent post on British national daily The Guardian website.
The daily had asked its readers to submit their favourite photos of “graffiti” via its online platform – Guardian Witness.
The newspaper started the assignment following news that the world-famous “graffiti mecca” known as 5 Pointz in New York City may be demolished.
Titled “Graffiti around the world – Guardian readers share their best photos” (www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/guardianwitness-blog/gallery/2013/oct/25/graffiti-around-the-world-best-photos), a total of 15 out of 378 contributions from around the globe were selected.
Among the 15 was “Little Children On A Bicycle” which was chosen as one of the best on a post dated Oct 25.

Unlike his experience in Johor recently, Lithunian artist Ernest Zacharevic’s latest mural on potholes in Penang was welcomed by the state government.
Although it is an apparent criticism against the local council for not addressing the matter for “tens of years”, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the art form will remain as a reminder.
“Ernest’s latest art depicts a depression that has not been filled up for tens of years. I do not know if it is true but the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) said they had not received any complaints about it,” Lim said at a press conference today.
“Whatever it is, we will look into the matter. But it looks so nice, it is better not to touch it,” the DAP secretary-general added.
Lim said Ernest’s work on the matter is “very creative” and would be retained as a reminder to the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) and other government agencies that they have to deal with public complaints promptly.
“Otherwise, it would become an art form and a reminder that the issue was not dealt with,” he quipped.
Lim said although the artwork, found along Jalan Nagore, may be seen as a criticism toward the state government or local council, it should be taken “positively”.
Although he had not applied nor sought permission to carry out the artwork, Ernest would not be fined or punished, Lim assured.
“That is because we are not autocratic. When we talk about freedom of expression for artists, we mean it. It is not a problem (to allow it), and I would tell the MPPP not to take action on the artist,” he said.

‘Lego man’ comes to George Town
THE controversial ‘Lego man’ graffiti, depicting a knife-wielding man waiting for a victim, has inevitably made its way up to Penang.
Student Mohd Ramzi Ahmadi, 21, said he was pleasantly surprised to see the cut-out stickers of the ‘Lego man’ appearing in Ah Quee Street, George Town.
“I was actually on my way to take a picture of the Cat and Bruce Lee mural along the same street when I stumbled upon it,” he said.
Also spotted taking pictures with the mural stickers were Johorean Michael Yang, 62, and his wife, Goh Pot Moi, 59.
“We wanted to pose with the mural in Johor but before we could do it, it was taken down,” said Yang.

Lithuanian ‘Banksy’ a hit in anti-graffiti Singapore
Singapore (AFP) – A Lithuanian artist who angered Malaysian officials with a street mural depicting a knife-wielding Lego robber has found unlikely admirers across the border in graffiti-averse Singapore for his works on a softer theme.
Ernest Zacharevic, who has been likened to British graffiti artist Banksy, has seen photos of his murals depicting children playing go viral on Facebook as Singaporeans unused to seeing art on outdoor walls expressed their approval.
Zacharevic received permission from the owners of private buildings in Singapore to paint the child-themed murals in the city’s picturesque Muslim trading and dining quarter, thereby avoiding a possible jail term for vandalism.
“It’s been a very interesting experience,” the 27-year-old Zacharevic told AFP by telephone.
“They do appreciate it. The moment I get out my tools, people approach me and they ask me what I’m doing,” said the artist, who has a studio in Malaysia’s Penang state.
…
Zacharevic said there was no overall theme to his murals in Singapore, which also includes bollards painted to depict the yellow-coloured “minion” characters from the animated film “Despicable Me”.
“I do not carry out any straightforward messages with my art…I try to provoke people to try to find their own meanings,” he said.

GEORGE TOWN: Few people are aware that the characters in one of Penang’s famous street art were based on actual people.
While tens of thousands have taken photographs of the mural “Little Children On A Bicycle” in Armenian Street, not many know that the children portrayed were actually siblings Tan Yi and Tan Kern.
The captivating and expressive mural was painted in April last year by Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic.

Penang CM criticises Johor Baru council for removing Zacharevic’s graffiti
GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has chided the Johor Baru Municipal Council (MBJB) for removing the artwork by Lithuanian-born artist Ernest Zacharevic in Taman Molek, stressing they were not defamatory.
The artwork, depicting a knife-wielding man waiting for his woman victim, was removed by the council’s workers who whitewashed it with paint on Thursday.
“If the picture of the criminal (the knife-holding man) is someone important, then it is wrong because it is defamatory.
“But if it is just art, action should not be taken,” Lim said in his speech at the opening of 2013 Penang Child Trauma Psychosocial Response Team Workshop at Sunway Hotel, Jalan Macalister.
