Man solicits ‘prostitute’ for sex, gets robbed instead
KOTA KINABALU: A 22-year-old man was robbed of his mobile phone at a hotel here on Monday night after he solicited a ‘prostitute’ via a mobile messaging application.
The man was told to go to a hotel in Bandaran here at 10.30pm after he contacted a ‘woman’ who goes by the name of “Mei” on WeChat.
As soon as he arrived, he met two men who asked for RM30 as well as his mobile phone.
After complying with their request, the man was told to wait for the woman at a hotel room but she never showed up.
Realising he had been duped, the man tried locating the two men but to no avail. He then lodged a police report at 12.05am.
Kota Kinabalu district police chief Assistant Commission Habibi Majinji said a team from the Criminal Investigation Division arrested both suspects yesterday (Wednesday).
“Investigations showed that the man went to the hotel to have sex with a woman whom he contacted on WeChat. It turns out that the two men were posing as Mei,” he said when contacted today.
Habibi said both suspects, aged 25 and 30 respectively, are being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft.
“This is the second incident involving individuals posing as women on WeChat to cheat men by offering sex.
“I urged members of the public to exercise caution and do not fall for such tricks,” he added.
