The word “keling” is considered a derogatory reference for Indians in the modern context.
The video was believed to be a ‘Save Malaysia’ event in Langkawi which took place in May.
The circulated clip is 25 seconds long and focuses on Mahathir making fun of Najib’s handling of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group.
“On Najib fighting IS, we can see Najib holding a rifle to fight IS,” he said sarcastically.
Mahathir then quipped: “What do the keling say, ‘podah’ (get lost). All lies.”

Ti reasons Dr M did not mean to be racis
Tun was trying to drive across a point using another language but his one “K” word became the focus of attention and anger. This is trivial and a typically Malaysian mentality, says Ti Lian Ker.
PETALING JAYA: Reasoning that former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad did not mean to be racist when he had used a derogatory term to refer to the Indian community, MCA religious harmony bureau head Ti Lian Ker however opined it did not absolve the former from the current state of race relations.

“Tun was actually trying to drive across a point by using another language. His point was missed but his one “K” word became the focus of attention and anger. This is trivial and a typically Malaysian mentality.
“I guess Tun M did not mean to sound racist here. It’s like when we watch television an African calling his brother “Come on Nigger” seems perfectly harmless but a white man calls a black man ‘Nigger’, it becomes a racist statement,” Ti said.
Elaborating further Ti said he believed Malaysians were getting hyper sensitive as everything from race to religion has been politicised.
“We have a tendency to miss the bigger picture or point by picking on a lesser emotional one. Malaysians are now making the topic of race and religion a “taboo” and will go berserk or show political temper by picking on a single word without looking at the context.

Sedition report against Mahathir for saying ‘keling’
PETALING JAYA: A police report has been lodged against a two-month-old video clip showing former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad using the word “keling” which has been widely spread online.
The recording was believed to have been made in May but has only recently been shared.
Former PKR Puchong division head Murali Subramaniam lodged the report at Petaling Jaya police station, Malaysiakini reported earlier today.

Insecure Mahathir uses that word against Indians
Mahathir’s use of the word “keling” is more of a reflection of his own insecurity and the perpetual psychological need on his part to be “accepted” as Malay rather than “mamak keling”.
Who says that with age comes wisdom? As one ages, it might bring out the worst streaks in a person. Mahathir Mohammed might be a person with years of political experience but one devoid of wisdom and humanity.
As a former prime minister, he should know that the word “keling” is derogatory and disparaging to Malaysian Indians.
He cannot utter “as the keling say podah” (as the “keling would say. get lost”) to pour scorn on the efforts of Najib Tun Razak to curb terroism in the country. While he can take umbrage with Najib, he should not have used the word “keling” in his remark.
The word by itself is not derogatory as it refers to an ancient historical place. However, the use of the word against Indians is seen as belittling or putting down members of the Indian community.
Mahathir is well aware of this. If he had used the word Indian or Tamil then it would not have elicited controversy.
Mahathir himself is not pure Malay in ethnic terms. His grandfather was a Keralite Muslim. He came to this country from Kerala, India.
To date Mahathir has passed himself off as a true Malay. But he is not. The term “mamak keling” has been used derogatively against him countless times. When he chose to challenge the former prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman in the 1960s, he was dismissed as not being a true Malay.
The use of the word “keling” by Mahathir is more of a reflection of his own insecurity and the perpetual psychological need on his part to be “accepted” as Malay rather than “mamak keling”.
It also shows his own frustrations about removing Najib from power. It is this pathological need to bring Malays together, in the form of an ethnic bumiputera party, that is driving Mahathir crazy.
I really wonder how a man like Mahathir can be taken seriously in Malaysian politics if he has nothing but contempt for non-Malays in the country. How can civil society leaders welcome his new party if his thoughts are alien to a society that we ought to build.

Video of Dr M using ‘keling’ word goes viral on social media

…
A video of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad using the word “keling” has been circulating on social media, particularly through WhatsApp, since yesterday.
…
Earlier this morning, a police report was lodged against the former prime minister over the matter.
According to the report sighted by Malaysiakini, Murali Subramaniam lodged it at the Petaling Jaya police station at 11.59am.
The report urged the police to take action under the Sedition Act against Mahathir for hurting the feelings of Malaysians of Indian descent with his use of the derogatory term in the viral video.
The report stated that as a man who had helmed Malaysia as its prime minister for over 20 years, Mahathir should have known better than to use such a word that constitutes an insult to all Malaysians of Indian descent.
