*Isma accused Marina Mahathir of being the mastermind behind a coalition of local human rights organisations called Coalition of Malaysian NGOs (Comango) since she is SIS’ board member and SIS is part of *Comango.

On Nov 8, Isma distributed 70,000 leaflets in mosques all over the country claiming that Comango was attempting to undermine Islam.

*Isma stands for Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR: Activist Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir settled her libel suit against Pertubuhan Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) after its deputy president read out a statement expressing their regrets to her.

High Court judge Justice Noraini Abdul Rahman recorded the consent order after almost seven hours of mediation between the parties. There was no order as to costs.

Isma lead counsel Azad Bashir said the settlement was recorded on behalf of its 13 office-bearers.

Among those named as defendants were Isma president Abdullah Zaik Abd Rahman and deputy president Aminuddin Yahaya.

Aminuddin admitted that the article had portrayed Marina as a liberal public figure and an anti-Islam person in Malaysia who allegedly made claims to legalise unnatural sex for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender groups.

Aminuddin said they were aware of Marina’s position as a transparent and respected community leader who fights for current issues locally and abroad.

“We express our regrets if the article and pamphlets had caused difficulties and given bad impact to her and given a wrong impression on her as a liberal mastermind and anti-Islam person,” he said.

In her lawsuit, Marina said Isma distributed 70,000 pamphlets on Nov 8, 2013, entitled Antara 54 NGO dalam Comango (Among 54 NGOs in Comango) in mosques, including those in the Klang Valley, Shah Alam, Putrajaya, Malacca, Kuantan and Kuala Terengganu.

Marina, who was present in court with her husband Tara Sosrowardoyo and her daughter Ineza Roussille, cried openly after the settlement was recorded. She was consoled by her husband and daughter.

Speaking to reporters later, Marina said she was relieved that a compromise had been reached with the settlement.

Marina said she felt hurt over the statements, causing her to file the suit as it had touched on her character and integrity.

Marina settles suit against Isma

KUALA LUMPUR: Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir (pic) has settled her libel suit against Pertubuhan Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) on Monday, after its deputy president read out a statement expressing their regrets to her.

High Court judge Justice Noraini Abdul Rahman recorded the consent order after almost seven hours of mediation between the parties. There was no order as to costs.

Marina had withdrawn her suit without liberty to file afresh against three persons after they claimed that they were not Isma members, said her lead counsel Rosli Dahlan.

Isma lead counsel Azad Bashir said that the settlement was recorded on behalf of its 13 office bearers.

In her lawsuit, Marina said that Isma had distributed 70,000 pamplets on Nov 8, 2013 entitled “Antara 54 NGO dalam Comango (Among 54 NGO in Comango)” in mosques including around Klang Valley, Shah Alam, Putrajaya, Malacca, Kuantan and Kuala Terengganu.

“We express our regrets if the article and pamplets had caused difficulties and given bad impact to her and given a wrong impression on her as a liberal mastermind and anti-Islam person,” said Aminuddin.

At the outset, Rosli told the judge that the parties had settled the matter through mediation and wanted the consent order recorded.

Azad confirmed terms of settlement to the judge.

Marina, who was present in court with her husband, Tara Sosrowardoyo and her daughter, Ineza Roussille, cried openly after the settlement was recorded. She was consoled her by husband and daughter.

Speaking to reporters later, Marina said she was “quite relieved” the settlement was reached in a “spirit of compromise”.

ISMA: Marina’s letter in, now lawyers to do the talking

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 23 — Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (ISMA) confirmed today it has received Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir’s letter, adding that it has engaged a lawyer to deal with the legal ultimatum.

Marina, a prominent activist and daughter of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, had last week initiated legal measures with a letter of demand (LoD) to ISMA, warning she will sue the group and its office bearers if they failed to retract allegedly defamatory statements against her by next week.

“We have received the letter from Marina and we will ask our lawyer to respond,” ISMA president Abdullah Zaik Abd Rahman told The Malay Mail Online in a text message, responding to Marina’s move.

He later confirmed that ISMA’s lawyer will respond directly to both Marina and her lawyers.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 23 — Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir has issued a legal ultimatum to Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (ISMA), promising to haul the Muslim activist group to court unless it retracts allegedly false and “defamatory” claims against her by next week.

The Malay Mail Online understands that Marina had through her lawyers recently sent out a letter of demand to ISMA and its office-bearers over the group’s statements that had purportedly cast serious doubts on her “integrity and honesty”.

The letter claims that ISMA’s allegedly groundless statements were intended to smear the reputation of Marina, a prominent activist who is also the eldest daughter of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

In the letter of demand (LoD) sighted by The Malay Mail Online, Marina’s lawyers listed four demands that ISMA must fulfill, including a confirmation on whether the group stands by its allegations.

Marina to take legal action against Isma

SIS’ Marina Mahathir is initiating legal action against Isma to put the record straight as to where she stands with Comango.

PETALING JAYA: Sisters in Islam (SIS) board member Marina Mahathir will be sending a letter of demand to Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) soon to retract their accusations; but she was short of revealing when the letter will be sent.

“My lawyers will be sending out letter of demand first with time frame. If they don’t comply, then we go to the next step,” she said in an email correspondence.

When asked when the letter would be sent, the social activist said, “soon.”

Sisters in Islam board member Marina Mahathir’s defense against claims that she is allegedly behind the Coalition of Malaysian NGOs’ (Comango) “anti-Islam” stance only proves that she supports Comango, said Islamic NGO Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma).

According to Isma vice-president Muhammad Fauzi Asmuni, this is because she fails to denounce the stand taken by Comango over their involvement in the United Nation’s Human Rights Universal Periodic Review process.

“Although she did not threaten to sue again (in her response published in online site Projek Dialog), she still did not deny that she opposes Comango’s demands, but actually supports them,” he said.

“Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma), in a flyer distributed at mosques throughout the country during prayers on Friday, Nov 8, accused me of being one of the ‘dalang‘ (masterminds) behind Comango.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 — Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) accused today Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir and Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan of supporting a local human rights coalition called Comango, whose demands the Islamist group said were a threat to Islam.

Isma distributed 70,000 leaflets at mosques throughout the country after Friday prayers today that slammed Comango for calling for the freedom to renounce Islam; the protection of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual (LGBT) rights; the removal of Malay privileges; the freedom to embrace Syiah teachings; and the right for Catholics to refer to God as “Allah”, among other things.

“The leaflets were meant to explain to Muslims about Comango’s demands that threaten the position of Islam in Malaysia and how it’s backed by liberal figures and 54 anti-Islam NGOs,” said Isma on its website today.
