JAKARTA: Volcanic ash from Indonesia’s smoldering Mount Sinabung has blanketed parts of Medan, the provincial capital of North Sumatra, forcing residents to wear masks.
Head of the local disaster mitigation agency, Subur Tambun, said smoke spewing Wednesday from the mountain is being carried by winds toward Medan. TV footage showed ash blanketing parts of the city which is about 50 kilometers (31 miles) northeast of the mountain.

The volcano in North Sumatra’s Karo district has been erupting since September, displacing more than 30,000 people. Saturday’s eruption came a day after the National Disaster Management Agency said residents living farther than five kilometres from the peak were being allowed to return to their homes after a lull in activity. The latest event sent hot rocks and ash up to 2,000 metres into the air, blanketing the surrounding countryside with grey dust, said volcanologist Kristianto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name.

KARO, Indonesia, Feb 01, 2014 (AFP) – Eleven people, including four schoolchildren, were killed Saturday after they were engulfed by scorching ash clouds spat out by Indonesia’s Mount Sinabung in its biggest eruption in recent days, officials said. Eight people were found dead in Sukameriah village, near Mount Sinabung on the western island of Sumatra, four or whom were high school students on a sightseeing trip to the volcano, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency. Three other bodies were recovered from the village later in the afternoon and were taken to hospital for identification, Nugroho added. Photographs taken by an AFP repoter at the scene showed apocalyptic scenes of corpses covered in ash just yards from a fallen motorcycle as masked rescuers wearing battled through the fumes to reach them. Subscribe to ITN News: http://bit.ly/itnytsub Mount Sinabung in Indonesia has erupted spitting volcanic ash five kilometres up into the sky. It is the third time the volcano has erupted in the past few months. The volcano, which is located 88 kilometres from the city of Medan, had been inactive for four centuries before erupting again in August 2010. Almost 2,500 people have been evacuated from local villages as experts warn the volcano could erupt again at any moment. Officials at the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation are advising people not go within three kilometres of the crater. Indonesia has 130 active volcanoes and straddles the infamous Pacific Ring of Fire. Report by Jessica Savage. — Jakarta Pos Thousands evacuated as Mt. Sinabung erupts again
A joint team from the Indonesian Military (TNI), the National Police and the Karo administration has evacuated around 2,500 residents of Gurukinayan village in Payung district, Karo regency, North Sumatra, as Mount Sinabung continued to erupt, spewing volcanic ash, pyroclastic clouds and blazing lava, on Monday morning. The Karo administration reported no deaths, while all residents evacuated were located in a safe area, away from the dangers of the eruption in Kabanjahe. Karo administration spokesman Jhonson Tarigan said Gurukinayan residents were evacuated as the village, located only 4-kilometers from the volcano, was already blanketed by volcanic ash. Jhonson said the government did not want to take the risk by letting Gurukinayan residents stay in their village as volcanic ash unleashed by Mt. Sinabung had reached the area. http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2013/11/11/thousands-evacuated-mt-sinabung-erupts-again.html — http://youtu.be/pwcmPrjimp4 — Republika Online @republikaonline
