Armed Islamic enforcement officers soon if proposal approved, says Minister

November 12, 2013

Islamic enforcement officers from the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) may soon carry firearms if a proposal for them to be armed is approved, according to a report today.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom (pic) said the move was in light of the recent murder of a religious officer in Kuantan.

“This is among the measures being considered to ensure the safety of the officers,” said Jamil, as quoted by the Star Online.

Acknowledging that equipping them with firearms may not be the best solution, Jamil said priority must be given to the safety of officers.

As part of the measure, Jamil said Jakim is also considering regular police patrols at its officers’ home to assure them of their safety.

Death of Mohd Raffli big loss to Jaip: Director

KUANTAN (Nov 10, 2013): The death of Pahang Islamic Religious Department (Jaip) chief enforcement officer Mohd Raffli Ab Malik, who was shot dead at his house this afternoon, has been described as a major loss to the department.

Jaip director Datuk Mohamad Roslan Harun said, in the two years that he knew Mohd Raffli, the latter was a dedicated colleague.

“Although he was firm in his ways, he was also very concerned about his subordinates when implementing measures in the course of his duty,” he told reporters after paying his last respects to Mohd Raffli at his home here today.

On the possibility of setting up an internal investigation committee on the case, he said Jaip might set up such a committee, based on information and police investigation.

He said this was to ensure there would not be a repeat of the incident involving Jaip officers.

Police are attempting to ascertain whether Ahmad Rafli’s murder is connected with the recent gazetting of anti-Shia laws in Pahang.

In July, it was reported that state religious authorities were planning to gazette a fatwa or edict to curb the spread of Shia teachings for fear it could confuse Muslims.

However, sources familiar with Ahmad Rafli’s recent cases, said apart from handling matters relating to Shia issues in the state, he had also been involved in the arrest of the deviant Tuhan Haron muslim group.

Ahmad Rafli was also said to have led raids on several night clubs in Kuantan recently. – November 10, 2013.
