Two passengers are in a critical condition after a gunman opened fire aboard a high-speed train from Amsterdam to Paris.
The Moroccan attacker was said to have been tackled by off-duty US Marines seconds after they heard him loading the AK-47 assault rifle in the train lavatory on Friday.
The gunman fired some shots, but their swift actions are believed to have saved many lives aboard the service operated by Thalys, a continental high-speed rail firm.
The attack took place as the train passed through Belgium, and the attacker, who is believed to have got on board in Brussels, was arrested at Arras station in northern France.
Charles Michel, the Belgian prime minister, described the incident as a “terrorist attack”.

A French ministry spokesman said the gunman’s motives were not known. French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said the French anti-terrorism prosecutor was investigating the incident.

A decapitated head covered in Arabic writing was found at a US gas company in southeast France earlier on Friday evening (June 26), police sources said.
The head was found after two assailants rammed a car into the premises, exploding gas containers.
The attack killed one person and one other was injured.
It is believed that Islamist militants are responsible for the attack.
The French public prosecutor said its anti-terrorist section had been deployed to investigate what it described as a suspected organised attack.
The decapitated head was found at the site, along with a flag bearing Islamist inscriptions.

Man arrested in France in plot to attack churches
(CNN)A 24-year-old man is in custody after he called for an ambulance, only to have French authorities come and discover weapons, ammunition and evidence of his plans to target churches — an attack that someone in Syria requested, a top prosecutor said Wednesday.
The man was identified later as Sid Ahmed Ghlam, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve told television broadcaster TF1.
Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins said Ghlam asked for medical help at his home in Paris’ 13th district Sunday morning, claiming he had accidentally injured himself when he mishandled a weapon.
But authorities found more than a man with a gunshot wound in his thigh. Molins said Ghlam was someone suspected of killing a 32-year-old woman hours earlier and who then intended to launch a larger-scale terror attack in the near future.
“(He) let them believe that he was the victim,” French President Francois Hollande said Wednesday. “But police understood that there was an investigation that needed to be initiated.”
That probe started in earnest when police spotted traces of blood and bags in the suspect’s car.

Law enforcement checked on the man once in 2014 and again this year, Cazeneuve said. The minister said the man planned to head to Syria, a country embroiled in a bloody, years-long civil war that has attracted foreigners wishing to join extremist militant groups like ISIS.
There was no indication he ever made it. But, Molins said, computer searches revealed that the man had been communicating with someone in Syria who “asked him to target a church.”

But authorities say he’s already claimed at least one victim.
Her name is Aurelie Chatelain. The 32-year-old was found dead Sunday morning sitting in the passenger seat of a parked car in Villejuif, killed by a single bullet that struck her shoulder, went through her body and ended up embedded in the seat.
Cazeneuve said Chatelain was the mother of a 5-year-old girl and had come to the region on Saturday to attend a training class.

French police sealed off a housing estate in Marseille on Monday after hooded gunmen opened fire on a police car with Kalashnikov rifles in what a senior local official suggested was an incident related to drug crime.
France has been on high alert following Islamist attacks in Paris last month that killed 17 people. Last week, two soldiers protecting a Jewish organization and radio station were wounded in a knife attack in the city of Nice.
The shooting in Marseille happened just as Prime Minister Manuel Valls arrived for a scheduled visit to hail statistics showing a fall in crime in France’s second largest city. There was no immediate information on whether there had been victims.
Elite police deployed following the incident on the north side of the city and residents of La Castellane neighbourhood, home to some 7,000, were ordered to stay indoors. A creche was evacuated as troops from the GIPN special forces unit were sent into the sealed-off estate, a police source said by telephone.

FIVE Russians from the Chechen region have been detained in southern France on suspicion of preparing an attack, local prosecutors say.
The five suspects were detained on Monday in the town of Beziers near the Mediterranean coast, around 70km from Montpellier.
France is on high alert following three days of attacks by jihadists earlier this month in Paris that left 17 dead.

Of those arrested in the southern France raids one lived in Beziers, and another “probably” in Montpellier. The addresses of the other three were still being sought.
The prosecutor said that certain “products” had been recovered during their searches, without giving further details.
Chechnya, a highly restive and predominantly Muslim region in Russia, has seen the largest demonstrations against cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed published by French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo last week.

NANTERRE, France: An armed man was holed up in a post office outside Paris on Friday (Jan 16) with two hostages, police said, adding there did not appear to be any link to extremist attacks.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 8 ― Even as the world mourns the lives lost in a shooting at a French satire magazine office, Malaysia’s Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin mocked today the need to protect satire that is “racist, xenophobic, bigoted”.
The fatal attack sparked condemnation all over the world and debate about the freedom of speech.
Posting on Twitter in response to the US Embassy KL, which said satire should be protected because it is “intended to provoke thought”, Khairy alluded that exceptions had to be made when the content of the satire is offensive.

Even a lawmaker from Islamist party PAS, Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad said the sensitive nature of Charlie Hebdo’s controversial cartoons on Islam cannot be used as a reason to justify yesterday’s multiple killings of the French satirical magazine’s staff members.
He said terrorism is a far greater evil than satirical comments and articles against Islam, adding that although PAS does not agree with the French magazine’s works, the party still believes any act of extremism is no way to protect the religion.

An apparent terrorist-related shooting at French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo left at least 11 people dead and wounded 10 more in Paris on Wednesday, police said.
French media reported that armed men wearing black hoods stormed the offices of the publication in a suburb of the city before firing automatic weapons in what police described as “carnage.”
Xavier Castaing, head of communications for the Paris police prefecture, confirmed the deaths, the Associated Press reported. Luc Poignant, an official of the SBP police union, said the attackers escaped in two vehicles.
A massive manhunt is now underway across the French capital.
President Francois Hollande, appearing at the scene immediately following the incident, said the shooting was “undoubtedly a terrorist attack” and that several other terror attacks had been thwarted in recent weeks. He described the shooting as an act of terrorism against France.
Hollande announced that France’s terror alert level would now be raised to its highest level and that the assailants — thought to be armed with Kalashnikovs — would be brought to justice. Security was immediately stepped up in public places, retail spots, transportation hubs and offices across Paris.

The three attacks
In the western city of Nantes late Monday, a van burst into a Christmas market, injuring 10 people before the driver began stabbing himself.
The night before, in the eastern city of Dijon, a driver who was shouting Allahu Akbar — “God is great” in Arabic —ran down several crowds, injuring 13 people before coming to a stop.
And on Saturday, an attacker knifed three police before he was shot to death by one of the officers. The man’s brother was arrested the same day in Burundi, their homeland. French counter terrorism investigators were called in to the case.

A driver shouting the Islamic phrase “God is great” in Arabic has run down pedestrians in Dijon, France, injuring 11, two seriously, French media say.
He was arrested after targeting pedestrians in five different parts of the city in the space of half an hour.
He is said to be “apparently imbalanced” and to have spent time in a psychiatric hospital.
French police shot dead a man on Saturday after he attacked them with a knife, also shouting “God is great”.
The lives of the two people seriously injured in Dijon are not said to be in danger.

Firefighters armed with paralysing darts were mobilised for the search, Sky News has reported.
They ground teams are being supported by a helicopter overhead, in a bid to track the tiger down.
Police are also involved in the search which has been ongoing since the big cat was reported earlier this morning.
“We have been running after it since this morning, police officers are trying to intercept it,” a police source said.

The wife of a supermarket owner in Montévrain was the first to see the tiger from the supermarket parking lot at 8:30am local time. She called her husband to say she thought she had seen a lynx and took a photograph, which the couple then showed to municipal authorities.
It’s not yet clear where the animal came from, although the Mayor’s Office said they ruled out the theory that it came from a circus that was based in Montévrain until last Saturday. Police said that no tiger was present during the circus health inspection.

Police and firefighters were desperately hunting for a tiger on the loose near Paris Thursday after a local resident took a photo of the fearsome animal and sounded the alert, authorities said.
Backed up by a helicopter overhead, firefighters armed with paralysing weapons were mobilised for the search in the Seine-et-Marne district near the French capital.
“We have been running after it since this morning, police officers are trying to intercept it,” a police source said.
A local spotted the animal in a supermarket car park, took a photo and then alerted authorities. It is as yet unclear where the animal comes from.

Egyptian denies murder of Chinese prostitute as Paris trial opens
PARIS: An Egyptian man denied the rape and murder of a Chinese prostitute but admitted hitting her, as his trial got underway in Paris on Wednesday.
The 26-year-old Tarek Shaban Bin Ziaed told the Paris court: “I hit her” but “no, I didn’t kill this woman.”
“Things went well between us. But at the end, I got angry with her so I hit her and took back my money, then I left,” said the suspect, speaking in hesitant French via a translator.
He is accused of raping and murdering the 56-year-old Yuan’e Hu, whose naked body was found in August 2012 in the Paris apartment she shared with other prostitutes.
He was arrested on the basis of photos taken from video surveillance footage that showed him entering the apartment in the company of the woman and leaving 30 minutes later.
The court heard how he had told police he did not know her, then admitted sexual relations with her and finally confessed to her murder.

The ‘clown craze’ is thought to have been triggered by a viral YouTube video and a recent episode of American Horror Story featuring a killer named Twisty.

Paris – A wave of panic sparked by evil clowns stalking French towns has spread to the south of France where police on Saturday night arrested 14 teenagers dressed as the pranksters, carrying pistols, knives and baseball bats.
A police source said the group of teens were arrested in the parking lot of a highschool in the port town of Agde, as several other complaints poured in over “armed clowns” in the region over the weekend.
In the Mediterranean city of Montpellier a man disguised as a clown was arrested after beating up a pedestrian with an iron bar, while three motorists in different towns complained about “scary clowns” threatening them.
The phenomenon of dressing up as an evil clown and terrifying passers-by — a trend which has also been seen in the United States and Britain — cropped up in the north of France in early October.
In the northern French town of Bethune, a fake clown last week received a six-month suspended jail term Monday for threatening passers-by while in full circus garb.
Using fake weapons these “clowns” have been “mostly spotted outside schools, but also on public roads, in bushes, in a square. Their targets are often young children or teenagers, but also adults,” a police source in northern France told AFP.

PARIS — A controversial green art installation on Paris’ tony Place Vendome has been taken down after being vandalized overnight.
The inflatable sculpture called “Tree” vaguely resembled a Christmas tree but evoked for others, including its creator, the artist Paul McCarthy, a giant anal sex toy.
Guide wires holding the sculpture in place were severed by vandals sometime overnight, according to French media reports. The sculpture was deflated and folded up on Saturday.

Two out of three Air France pilots were sleeping minutes before one shouted ‘F***: we’re dead!’ as their plane plunged into the sea with the loss of all 228 people on board.
Horrific details of the last moments of Flight 447, which claimed the lives of five Britons and three Americans, have emerged in a disturbing new investigation into the 2009 disaster involving an Airbus 330.
Published in the October edition of Vanity Fair magazine, it raises terrifying questions about safety aboard civilian passenger jets, and the ‘culture’ of the Air France pilots on board.
Excerpts from recorded conversations between 37-year-old David Robert, Pierre-Cedric Bonin, 32, and Marc Dubois, the 58-year-old captain of the plane, reveal that two of them were asleep when the plane got into difficulty in a tropical storm.
Referring to Bonin, a ‘Company Baby’ on the Rio de Janeiro-Paris flight, the piece reads: ‘With most of the weather still lying ahead and an anxious junior pilot at the controls, Dubois decided it was time to get some sleep.’

Up until now it was known that Dubois was sleeping off a night in Rio with his girlfriend, an off-duty hostess and opera singer who was on the doomed flight.
‘I didn’t sleep enough last night. One hour – it’s not enough,’ said Dubois, before he went to sleep.
Referring to ‘the flight-rest compartment, a small cabin containing two berths just behind the cockpit’, the piece describes how Robert was also ‘dozing there’.
The article continues: ‘On the night of May 31, 2009, the pilots of Flight 447 certainly did not serve their passengers well.’
The plane was suffering from a loss of lift – or a ‘stall’ – and its airspeed sensors had malfunctioned.
But instead of lowering the plane’s nose to deal with the stall, as they should have done according to normal procedures, they raised it.
Dubois finally entered the cockpit 1 minute and 38 seconds after the pitot tubes malfunctioned, but by that time panic was setting in.
Robert said: ‘F***, we’re going to crash! It’s not true! But what’s happening?’
Soon after, either Robert or Bonin are heard to say: ‘F***, we’re dead’ before – 4 hours and 15 minutes into the flight – it crashes into the Atlantic.
It took two years to retrieve bodies from the bottom of the sea, along with essential records such as the flight’s voice recorder.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 — France has issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to be vigilant in several countries including Malaysia over fears of a threat from militants from Islamic State.
The advisory comes after French tourist Hervé Gourdel was beheaded in Algeria on Wednesday by terrorists claiming to belong to Islamic State, and as local police intelligence revealed that Malaysian nationals are among those who have travelled to Syria to join the terror group.
In a posting on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website on Thursday, French authorities advised its citizens residing in or passing through Malaysia to be extra-vigilant.
This was due to the risk of kidnappings and “hostile” acts against those from France and other member countries, which is a member of an international coalition against the “Daech”, the ministry said on its travel advice page.
“Daech” is the French spelling for the Arabic-derived term “Daesh”, which the French government started using last week to call Islamic State.

RODEZ, France: Members of a Facebook group that tipped off motorists about speed traps in southern France slammed the “hypocritical” nature of the case against them as their trial opened on Tuesday.
The case, the first of its kind in France, targets 15 suspects, including the group’s co-founder.
“Here are the Internet terrorists,” their lawyer Remy Josseaume told the court sarcastically in the southern city of Rodez.
“It is hypocritical to put these people on trial while there are many products that inform drivers where radars are positioned and they are legal,” he said.
The suspects face charges of helping motorists and motorcyclists avoid speeding fines.
Eight of them also face charges of insulting police officers by referring to them by unflattering bird names on the site.
The Facebook group “Which Tells You Where The Police Are In (the southern French town of) Aveyron” was created in 2012 and has more than 10,000 members.
A message on its site says: “Alert this group if you are in a car and you see a blue (police) van, a radar or police on motorcycles in the Aveyron.
“It won’t take you more than 30 seconds and you will be a hero for people who read your message,” it says.

Social media users have lashed out at Laura Bushney, the Australian woman who went on TV, accusing a Malaysia Airlines (MAS) chief steward of sexually assaulting her while on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Paris on August 4, claiming that her story sounds far-fetched.
In comments retrieved from the Facebook page of Sunday Night – the programme on Australia’s Channel 7 where Bushney had appeared in – many expressed doubts over her story, questioning how she had managed to record the act on her mobile phone.
“It’s really rubbish. She did it for one thing. Money. Besides ruining the reputation of an innocent man,” said Jessica Greenhill’s comment, which was followed by more than 300 others in the Facebook page.

Another social media user Tanya Pearce, who commented on the same page, saying that she believed Bushney had allowed it to happen in order to get compensation from MAS.
“I believe she allowed it to happen. She wasn’t really crying. I don’t know how she was in fear but did not scream.
“What could he (the chief steward) have done in a plane full of passengers? I think it was to get compensation,” she said.
Alexandra Shand said Bushney’s allegations, which she had watched on TV, seemed false and made her turn to a different channel.

Another Facebook user said Sunday Night had sensationalised Bushney’s allegations following the MH370 and MH17 disasters that hit MAS recently.
“If it was not MAS, this story would not have been aired. So, don’t say you are doing it for her (Bushney) when the real reason is to gain viewers,” said CJ Booth.

Aussie woman relates ‘sexual assault’ on MAS
Laura Bushney, an Australian citizen, has finally gone public about her alleged sexual assault ordeal at the hands of a Malaysia Airlines chief steward.
In an interview with Sunday Night aired on Australia’s Channel Seven today, Bushney said the chief steward had massaged her legs under the guise of “comforting her”.

An audio recording, via mobile phone, of the incident was also released where Bushney was heard sobbing as she murmured: “He’s massaging my legs… I’m so scared, I just want to get off this plane.”
According to the report, Bushney said the air steward, who had placed his hands on her legs, then proceeded to move his hands towards her belly button but she pushed him away.
The programme also interviewed Sophie Lachance, another passenger who was alerted to the incident.
Bushney had sought Lachance’s help after she told the steward to get her something to drink.
“Somebody touched my arm … and I remember I woke up and I saw her face full of tears and she was sobbing really, really strong,” Lachance was quoted as saying.
Bushney complained to the police at Charles De Gaulle Airport after landing in Paris.
The report said the assailant, who is a union figure, had since admitted to the police of the incident.

An Australian woman who had accused a Malaysia Airlines cabin crew member of sexually abusing her is set to go public to tell her side of the story, of how she was assaulted during a flight to Paris earlier this month.
News.com.au reported that the 26-year-old woman, known only as Laura, will also show footage of the assault which she had taken using her phone, on Seven’s Sunday Night show.
Laura said that she was sexually assaulted by the chief steward on board flight MH20 on August 4.
“I couldn’t stop it. I just froze. I was just scared,” she was seen telling Seven reporter Ross Coulthart in the promo video.

Laura, it was reported, had begun recording mid-flight after the assault had taken place.
A woman’s voice could be heard crying to a man sitting across the aisle.
She was heard saying: “You did, you did, you did, don’t lie. It’s what you did.
“I’m so scared. I just want to get off this plane… I don’t want to see you. Go away. You give me the creeps, you dirty old man.”
Laura made a report with the authorities upon reaching Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport and the steward was detained two days later to assist in the investigations.

The Australian passenger complained to authorities about the incident after touchdown at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport, saying she had told crew at the beginning of the flight about her apprehension of flying with the airline in the wake of the two disasters.
The steward sat beside her and sexually assaulted her under the pretext of ‘comforting’ her, she said, according to a source close to the French probe.
Malaysia Airlines vowed to assist French authorities in their investigation, adding ‘the safety, comfort and well-being of our passengers is always our highest priority’.
‘Malaysia Airlines expects and accepts nothing short of the highest standards of conduct from its crew and takes any such allegations very seriously,’ it said.
The case, involving the chief steward of a Paris-bound flight, is the latest setback for the struggling national carrier, which was struck by twin tragedies this year when one of its passenger jets went missing and another was shot down over conflict-torn east Ukraine.
Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 disappeared mysteriously in March with 239 people aboard, en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. No trace has been found and the airline was widely criticised for its handling of the crisis.
On July 17, MH17 was shot down over Ukraine, with 298 people killed.
The airline stands on the financial brink after the disasters.

At 40,000ft, MAS steward began ‘massaging her legs & put his hand down her pants’ – sex assault victim
Three hours into the half-full flight to Paris, Laura Bushney, 26, said Mohd Rosli Bin Ab Karim sat beside her and allegedly began massaging her legs under the guise of “comforting her” and later put his hand down her pants.
She told Sunday Night, in an interview to air this week, she was terrified when the 54-year-old steward allegedly began touching her, but was “frozen in panic”.
“I just keep saying why didn’t I scream, why didn’t I shout? Why didn’t I stop it? I am a strong person because I can do that, I know I can.”
“When I was in the moment I couldn’t. I felt so scared, so petrified,” Ms Bushney said.
However, Ms Bushney recorded the alleged incident on the mobile phone wrapped in a scarf next to her pillow.

In the recording she can be heard whispering what Rosli was doing to her.
“He’s massaging my legs,” she can be heard saying.
“I’m so scared, I just want to get off this plane.”
After the passenger sitting in front of Ms Bushney, Canadian Sophie Lachance, 23, insisted Ms Bushney report what happened, the flight crew sat her down with the steward again.
She also filmed this confrontation, in which Rosli can be seen pleading with her and saying his “intentions were good”.

Britons John and Faith Dyson, both in their 70s, had retired to this quiet little village. Another couple, Briton Robert Dunlop, 67, and his Polish-born wife Krystinife, were furious that the Dysons had apparently trespassed on a shared lane they claimed to own.
At first, the Dunlops had merely blocked the Dysons’ front door with a large van. They nailed up their neighbours’ window shutters and barred their door with wooden fence posts cemented into the ground.
To leave home, the Dysons to use their back garden.
Finally, last week when the Dysons were away, the Dunlops built a wall reaching up to the second storey of the house.
The French villagers were upset, so they took down the wall, unbarred the door and freed the shutters.

Saudi prince’s convoy robbed of 250,000 euros in Paris
The convoy had been heading for Le Bourget airport north of the city. Witnesses told police a group of heavily armed men attacked the last car in the convoy near Porte de la Chapelle at around 2100 (1500 EST) and drove off in it.
The car attacked was a supply vehicle It was later found burned.

PARIS: Kalashnikov-wielding robbers have attacked the motorcade of a Saudi prince in Paris, making off with 250,000 euros ($335,000) in cash and reportedly stealing “sensitive” documents, French police said.
The theft took place in northern Paris as the motorcade was making its way from the Saudi embassy to an airport in Le Bourget, said police, who confirmed there were no injuries.

French army kills fighters in C. Africa operation

French troops have killed several armed fighters in the Central African Republic as Paris on Friday rolled out a UN-backed operation to restore security after a bloodbath that left dozens of bodies strewn across the capital.
The French army said its soldiers killed the armed men Thursday in a dawn clash near the airport of the capital Bangui.
“An armed pick-up opened fire three times in the direction of civilians and French troops. After the third time, we retaliated and destroyed the vehicle,” a spokesman for the French general staff said.
On Friday, warplanes overflew Bangui, a day after at least 140 civilians were killed in the capital — many clubbed or hacked to death in violence that erupted amid international warnings that the country risked sectarian massacres.
The Central African Republic (CAR) has descended into chaos since a motley coalition of rebel fighters known as Seleka overthrew the government in March and installed their own chief, Michel Djotodia, as president — the first Muslim leader of the majority Christian country.

France has begun deploying an additional 600 troops, doubling the force it already had in and around the capital and bolstering the African military force MISCA.
Britain has dispatched a C17 transport plane to support the French operation, London said. Germany also offered to help by providing Airbus A310 transport planes to carry troops and equipment to a neighbouring country, a defence ministry spokesman said.
The European Union has unblocked 50 million euros ($68 million) to aid the operation, said EU Commission head Jose Manuel Barroso.

With Les Bleus 2-0 down after the first leg of their play-off qualifier against Ukraine, she was confident they would lose in Paris on Tuesday.
But they didn’t – and ended up winning 3-0 on the night, 3-2 on aggregate.
Predictably, the ratings went through the roof on Canal+ as millions wanted to see Doria stick to her word.
And she did… although not in the way viewers may have expected.
Instead of taking her clothes off on-screen, she made a series of jokes and allowed a long-distance back shot of her running across a field.
Doria said she would be ‘a poil’ – French for naked – but in fact presented the weather from Poil, which is a village near Paris.
It was a pathetic stunt – not funny at all,’ said disappointed Canal+ viewer Remy Jacob. ‘Everyone was hoping Doria would be a good sport, but it was all nonsense.’
Earlier Antoine de Caunes, who became famous in Britain as the Eurotrash presenter on Channel 4, and now fronts Le Grand Journal in France had said: ‘You will be seeing Doria in all her gloria!’
Doria, a former model and actress, has been presenting the weather on the nightly news and talk show since August 2012.
After France scored their second goal to draw level on Tuesday, she had tweeted: ‘F***. 2-0 for France. I’m starting to stress.’

French hostage in Nigeria escapes his jailers
PARIS/ABUJA (Reuters) – A French engineer who had been held hostage by Islamist militants in northern Nigeria for almost a year has escaped his jailers, President Francois Hollande said on Sunday.
“This man showed exceptional courage. At the risk of his life, he took advantage of an opportunity and then, in conditions worthy of an adventure novel, he managed to free himself,” Hollande told reporters in Israel, where he is on a state visit.
Hollande gave no details about the escape, but a Nigerian police official told Reuters Francis Collomp, who is over 60, had slipped out of his cell and managed to find a motorcycle taxi which took him to a police station.
Collomp was seized when about 30 gunmen stormed his compound on December 19 in the northern Nigerian town of Rimi, close to the Niger border where al Qaeda’s North African wing, al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), operates.
Hollande said French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, who arrived in Israel with Hollande, was flying to Nigeria to receive him.

Dozens of French celebrities, including iconic actress Catherine Deneuve, have signed a petition against government plans to crack down on those who pay for sex.
“Without supporting or promoting prostitution, we reject the penalisation of those who prostitute themselves and those who seek their services,” read the petition published in French media on Saturday.
“We demand a real debate without ideological prejudice,” added the text, signed by about 60 people, including rock stars, filmmakers and a former culture minister.
A proposed anti-prostitution law will come before the National Assembly on November 27 and 29. The bill seeks to penalise clients instead of sex workers in a bid to phase out prostitution.
It seeks to impose a 1,500-euro ($2,000) fine on those paying for sex, and double that if the person is caught doing it again.
Prostitution itself is legal in France, but soliciting, pimping, and minors selling sex are prohibited.
The latest petition comes amid fierce debate on the buying and selling of sex in France.

France Opens Racism Probe Into Far-Right Magazine
he French government has opened a racism investigation after a far-right magazine compared the country’s black justice minister to a monkey on its cover.
In a statement Wednesday, Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said he had brought Minute magazine to the attention of the Paris prosecutor, citing French law that forbids racist abuse.
The magazine described Justice Minister Christiane Taubira as “crafty as a monkey” and referred obliquely to an incident when she was greeted by racist taunts from a young girl at a recent protest against gay marriage in the western city of Angers. She was also compared to a monkey on the Facebook page of a candidate for the right-wing National Front party.

Right-wing French magazine assails Black minister with racist slur
France’s justice minister has been publicly subjected to racist taunts for the third time in barely a month, triggering a wave of outrage Tuesday over the hounding of the country’s top black politician.
In the wake of two highly-publicised incidents in which the minister, Christiane Taubira, was compared to a monkey, far right weekly magazine Minute published a cover page with the headline “Crafty as a monkey, Taubira gets her banana back”.
Amid an outcry over the magazine’s contents, Interior Minister Manuel Valls announced he was examining whether it was legally possible to block the distribution of the magazine.
“We cannot let this pass,” he said.
Numerous politicians took to Twitter to demand the prosecution of the magazine’s editor and publisher for incitement to racial hatred. Rights group SOS Racisme said it would lodge a legal complaint over the cover, a move that will force authorities to investigate whether any law has been breached.
Harlem Desir, the First Secretary of the ruling Socialist Party and one of the founders of SOS Racisme, said all copies of the magazine should be seized by police.
Sports Minister Valerie Fourneyron called the cover “Unacceptable and nauseating” and there was also widespread condemnation from members of the centre-right UMP opposition party.

EMILE DURKHEIM: ALTRUISTIC SUICIDE
One of the earliest sociologists to study suicide was Emile Durkheim. He described four types of suicide. Of interest today is altruistic suicide.
Altruistic Suicide is suicide committed for the benefit of others. A man throwing himself onto a grenade is giving up his own life for those around him. He dies that they may live.
However, this is the type of suicide that occurs when integration is too great, the collective consciousness too strong, and the individual is forced into committing suicide. Integration may not be the direct cause of suicide here, but the social currents that go along with this very high degree of integration can lead to this.
According to Durkheim this type of suicide may actually spring from hope, for it depends on the belief in beautiful perspectives beyond this life.
During the Second World War, Japanese pilots who flew their aeroplanes into battleships of the enemy would be doing so for the glory of their Emperor and the Empire. To this end, Japanese pilots would fly on their mission against the Americans with enough petrol for only one trip: there.
These ‘kamikaze’ pilots killed the enemy and thus, killed themselves.
SUICIDE ATTACKS ARE AN ALTRUISTIC FORM OF SUICIDE
A suicide attack is an attack upon a target, in which an attacker intends to kill others and/or cause great damage, knowing that he or she will either certainly or most likely die in the process. Between 1981 and 2006, 1200 suicide attacks occurred around the world, constituting 4% of all terrorist attacks but 32% (14,599 people) of all terrorism related deaths. 90% of these attacks occurred in Iraq, Israel, Afghanistan, Pakistan or Sri Lanka.
Although use of suicide attacks has occurred throughout recent history — particularly with the Japanese kamikaze pilots of World War II — its main notoriety as a specific kind of attack began in the 1980s and involved explosives deliberately carried to the target either on the person or in a civilian vehicle and delivered by surprise. The September 11 attacks (also referred to as September 11, September 11th, or 9/11)were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks launched by the Islamist terrorist group al-Qaeda upon the United States in New York City and the Washington, D.C. areas on September 11, 2001.

The All Blacks took until the second half to break open their match against France in Paris and finished it on the back foot as the home side battled to complete what would have been a remarkable comeback before going down 26-19.
Morgan Parra and New Zealand’s Dan Carter had spent the first half exchanging penalties as the lead switched first one way and then the other before the sides went into the interval level at 9-9.
