At present, BN holds the Terengganu State Assembly by a majority of 1 seat, 17-15.

EC demonstrates ink, assures it is indelible

KUALA BESUT The Election Commission (EC) held a demonstration for the Kuala Besut by-election today to prove its claim that the indelible ink to be used is of better quality than the 13th general election’;s controversial product .

Several journalists, including Malaysiakini, participated in the demonstration.

“The EC finds that if the indelible ink (stain) is washed, the colour will reappear on the finger,” said EC chief Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusuf in a statement distributed after the demonstration.

Malaysiakini journalists attempted to wash off the ink an hour after its application, and found the stain still persisting even  after washing twice with soap.

The ink also darkened after some time.

Karpal will be president if PAS wins, Kuala Besut told
10:07PM Jul 14, 2013

Deputy Agriculture Minister Tajuddin Abdul Rahman warned Kuala Besut voters that Karpal Singh could be Malaysia’s first president if they allow DAP to control Putrajaya through PAS.

“The sultan is the head of our religion. The agong is a Muslim. If we become a republic, (DAP chairperson) Karpal Singh then becomes the president. He would be your chief.

NONE“Can this be? Can Karpal Singh be the head of Islam? No,” he said in his opening speech at a programme by the Veterinary Services Department in Kampung Baharu, Kuala Besut, this morning.

He reasoned that PAS wants to be in Putrajaya but has only 20 MPs, hence it has joined Pakatan Rakyat and in doing so has opened its doors to DAP for negotiation.

“Do you think DAP would give them (benefits) for free? They (DAP) would work with PAS, but the condition is that they would demand this and demand that.

“Perhaps they will ask to be the deputy prime minister.

“Who would that be? (DAP parliamentary leader) Lim Kit Siang, or his son Lim Guan Eng,” he said according to sources.

NONEHe also claimed Karpal has said that if PAS is to remain in Pakatan Rakyat, it must never mention the issue of ‘Islamic struggle’ and must ‘tread over his dead body’ first if it were to establish an Islamic state.

Deputy minister: Giving aid in Kuala Besut ‘a coincidence’

KUALA BESUT The aid provided by the government to fishermen and farmers is carried out continuously and not seasonally, like during elections, Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said today.

He said the government was always concerned with the well-being of the people and efforts were made to increase their income, especially of fishermen and farmers.

“If aid is given during elections, it is just a coincidence, like my coming to Kuala Besut, it is the customs of the Malays to bring souvenirs to the host,” he told reporters after opening a programme by the Veterinary Service Department Department in Kampung Baharu in Kuala Besut.

NONEAt the event, Tajuddin (left) also handed out aid, worth RM147,750, comprising livestock and tricycles to 314 farmers in the Kuala Besut state constituency.

Nomination ends – it’s a straight PAS-BN fight
8:18AM Jul 12, 2013

KUALA BESUT BY-ELECTION The small town of Kuala Besut is best known as the gateway to the Pulau Perhentian resort islands, but today it comes under the spotlight for a completely different reason.

a2

A little over a fortnight ago, the incumbent BN assemblyperson Dr A Rahman Mokhtar passed away from lung cancer and the campaign to decide his successor starts with the nomination day this morning.

a3

If BN wins the by-election, the status quo prevails.

However, if PAS scores, an unprecedented situation will arise with  BN and Pakatan Rakyat each holding half of the 32-member state assembly – a hung assembly.

aa

Umno is fielding civil engineer Tengku Zaihan Che Ku Abd Rahman against businessperson Azlan Yusof from PAS. The stage is now set for the first by-election since the 13th general election on May 5.

Back BN as easiest way to avoid instability, says DPM

KUALA BESUT Voters here should support BN because it is the easiest way out of a potential instability in the Terengganu state assembly, said the coalition’s deputy chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin.

“If not, there will be other effects that I do dare not speak of on the state constitution, position of the monarch, political stability, the possibility of fresh elections and people coming out (to vote) again.

“These are the processes already in place in the rules and the constitution. However the easiest answer is choose BN and at least the situation would return to status quo, stable, and can help the state government continue its development agenda,” he said.

Muhyiddin was speaking to reporters as the BN Kuala Besut by-election director at the end of the nomination period.

Now EC wants voters to dip finger into indelible ink
12:40PM Jul 10, 2013

The Election Commission (EC) today announced that voters will now have to dip their left index finger into the indelible ink for the Kuala Besut by-election.

NONEIn a statement today, EC chairperson Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof (left) said the commission will no longer apply the indelible ink on the finger as practised during the 13th general election.

“Having the voter dip their left index finger is an additional procedure to prevent voters from voting twice,” said Abdul Aziz.

Abdul Aziz, however, reminded that the EC will primarily check the identity cards of the voters and if their name appeared to be have been struck off from the electoral roll because they had already cast their vote, they would not be allowed to vote again.

“This means the duplication of votes would not happen,” he assured.

Businessman vs engineer in Kuala Besut

Harakahdaily, 10 July 2013

Jul 10: PAS is fielding a popular local businessman in its quest to wrest the Kuala Besut state seat in Terengganu from BN at the July 24 by-election.

■ L-R: Che Long and Tengku Zaihan

Azlan Yusof was announced as the party’s candidate by president Tuan Guru Abdul Hadi Awang last night. He faces BN’s Tengku Zaihan Che Ku Abdul, an engineer by profession.

Azlan, known among locals as Che Long, 48, is a contractor from Kampung Baru, and runs a wood store in Kuala Besut, with business dealings in neighbouring Kelantan.

Nomination day for Kuala Besut has been set for tomorrow.

A PAS victory would result in a hung state assembly in Terengganu, a historic first in the country’s electoral history.

Vice president Husam Musa will head a high-powered campaign management team comprising of senior leaders.

PAS has won four times in Kuala Besut, in 1959, 1969, 1974 and 1999.

Last May, the late A. Rahman Mokhtar gained 8,809 votes, defeating PAS’s Napisah Ismail who got 6,375 votes, a majority of 2,434 votes.

VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE on EC chief to conduct Kuala Besut by-election fairly – Kasthuri

Written by  Kasthuri Patto

According to the Election Commission chief, the by-election must be held within 60 days and before 27 August 2013.

The question begs, after all the sham, travesty and various unanswered questions surrounding how the 13th GE was carried out, has the EC gained public confidence to run the first ever by-election in Terengganu in a clean, free, fair and democratic manner?

By rule of thumb, the EC body and its chair must be removed from partisan political control and intervention. It must not be seen by the public as closely associated with the government of the day, or as working toward the re-election of the incumbents.
…..

Malaysians have lost faith in the current Election Commission chairperson in running the impending by-election that he and his team will give their full pledge and commitment to ensure a legally binding, democratic election, not because Malaysians are anti-EC or even anti-Abdul Aziz but rather anti-electoral fraud, anti-rigging, anti-racism and anti money politics.

How can the people of Kuala Besut be assured of a democratic, fair and clean by-election if the same chairman and the same team are entrusted to run this election despite so many disgraceful loopholes that are still unresolved? Tan Sri Abdul Aziz must step down now and resign from his position as Election Commission so that under a different leadership, who is bound by law will be able to ensure a peaceful electoral process, without fear or favour thus enjoying public confidence and instilling the true spirit of democracy and freedom.

Hung Terengganu assembly unlikely, say politicians

Will a hung state assembly emerge in Terengganu with an upcoming by-election that has the possibility of splitting the 32-seat legislature down the middle?

Unlikely, according to feedback from politicians on both sides of the divide.
…..

Terengganu MCA chief and former state executive councillor Toh Chin Yaw (right) told Bernama the casting vote by the speaker of the assembly, a post now held by Mohd Zubir Embong, would keep the BN in power in the state.

“The chair of any meeting has the casting vote. If voting is tied, under certain regulation, the chair (speaker) will exercise his casting vote,” he said.

If the number of seats is tied at 16-16, the BN government would get that one majority from the speaker’s casting vote.

Besut assemblyman dies, first by-election expected soon

June 26, 2013

The Kuala Besut by-election would be pivotal for Barisan as the ruling coalition only won 17 seats in Election 2013 to Pakatan Rakyat’s 15 seats.

While Barisan won closely, Barisan had issues with the appointment of Ahmad as mentri besar as most the coalition lawmakers wanted another person to lead the state government.

But Ahmad said he got the job after last-minute negotiations within the coalition.

With Dr Abdul Rahman’s death, there could be changes in the state government and a possible Pakatan victory in the by-election would cause a hung state assembly, say analysts.
