MELAKA: Approximately 3,500 visitors came to Jonker Walk here in the first phase of its trial reopening on Friday (June 26) night.

Jonker Walk management deputy chairman Datuk Wira Gan Tian Loo said the figure was obtained from the visitors’ registration book.

“The first phase was on Friday (June 26) followed by the second phase on Saturday (June 27) and the final one on Sunday (June 28).

“The exercise was aimed to fine-tune the standard operating procedure (SOP),” he said when interviewed here on Saturday.

Gan said the majority of those patronising the night market on Friday were locals from various states.

He added that once the three-day trial run was completed, the management would obtain permission from the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) to fully reopen Jonker Walk from next week (July 3).

Gan said 150 traders took part in the first phase while another 150 will start operating their businesses on Saturday and Sunday.

He said a strict SOP was adhered to during the trial run and monitored by MBMB as well as health authorities.

Care for a barbecue sausage, phallic-shaped?

ACCA: Sausages come in many shapes with combinations of meat and spices. Most are packed in longish intestine casing.

But a trader at the tourist-popular Jonker Walk here must have thought it a “brilliant idea” when he packed his sausages in the shape of a penis.

The Malacca Historic City Council thought otherwise and immediately revoked the business  licence of trader who has been selling the barbecue sausages for about two weeks.

Mayor Datuk Zainal Hussin said the trader’s licence has been nullified with immediate effect.

“The trader also violated the by-law by selling food items when the licence only stipulated that souvenirs and gifts could be sold by him,” Zainal said on Sunday.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron was equally annoyed when he learned of such “lewd things” being sold that could tarnish the image of Malacca as a tourist state.

The girl, who wore toy sunglasses and covered her face, neck and hands with gold-coloured powder, would invite tourists to take photos with her near Jonker Walk in Malacca.

There was a basket with a note stating that tourists would need to pay RM2 (S$0.65) for taking her photo.

It was learnt that she had been “operating” there for a few weeks. She would hide behind a chair and shout out that she would not allow her photo to be taken without being paid.

A woman, believed to be her mother, was monitoring her.

Kota Laksamana assemblyman Lai Keun Ban received complaints from the public after the girl’s photos were circulated on social media. Lai, went to check on the girl on Wednesday.

Now PAS goes after Malacca Oktoberfest

zt

PAS’ beef with beer festivals remains unabated as the Islamic party is now targeting another Oktoberfest event, this time in Malacca.

Malacca PAS ulama chief Zulkifli Ismail Mohamad in a statement today called on the state’s Chief Minister Idris Haron to put a stop to the event scheduled on Oct 18 at Jonker Walk, a popular tourist spot in the historic city.

“This is a foreign culture to the people of Malacca.

“This is something negative that will cause the rakyat to fall into alcoholism. Malaccans of various races with a strong Eastern culture must be protected from being damaged,” Zulkifli said.

He added that Prophet Muhammad had said alcohol was the source of all evil.

He said Islam does not prevent non-Muslims from consuming alcohol but turning it into a festival purportedly goes against the religion and endangers the rakyat.

Malacca Oktoberfest will go on but we’ll watch Muslims, says chief minister: MELAKA, Oct 11 — The Melaka State…

MELAKA, Oct 11 — The Melaka State Government will place its enforcers at the Oktoberfest scheduled to be held in Jonker Walk on October 18 to prevent Muslims from consuming alcohol.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said stern action would be taken against those found to drink alcohol at the event.

“I want to give the assurance that we will make sure no Muslims are allowed to consume alcohol there and we will take stern action if there are reports of it happening,” he told reporters after the award-presentation ceremony held in conjunction with the 76th birthday of Melaka Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob at Dewan Seri Negeri here today.

However, he said, the state government was not stopping non-Muslims from consuming alcohol during the event because there were no legal provisions against that.

On the call by the head of the Melaka PAS Ulama Council, Zulkifli Ismail Muhammad yesterday urging the Melaka state government to take action to stop the event, Idris said: “I do not know why it is called an alcohol party”.

He said the programmes which would be held during the event appeared to encourage foreign tourists to visit Melaka.

He said PAS leaders and supporters should keep an open mind as they lived in a multi-racial society, taking into account the spirit of “for them their religion and for us our religion”.

Malacca wants Jonker Walk to be top tourist spot

MALACCA: Officers from the state government have begun gathering feedback from traders at Jonker Walk following Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron’s assurance that the heritage street would be turned into a top tourist destination in the country.

Teo Chee Keong, head of a pro-tem committee to upgrade Jonker Walk, said several traders met senior state officials to give their views on how to improve the popular street.

“We are giving our fullest support to the state government as we want our livelihoods to continue without problems,” he said yesterday.

He said he also met State Transport and Project Rehabilitation committee chairman Lim Ban Hong who had been tasked with looking into the needs of the traders.

There has also been speculation that Jonker Walk would be closed by the end of the year.

On July 25, Idris met 36 traders and reassured them that Jonker Walk would not be closed but would be improved with better security and cleanliness.

Seven Jonker Walk shophouses bulldozed by drunk trailer driver

MALACCA: A driver, believed to be drunk, rammed and severely damaged seven shophouses with a laden four-tonne trailer, around Jonker Walk here.

Central Malacca  Deputy OCPD, Supt Razali Bakar said the trailer, driven by a 48-year-old man, entered Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock and rammed a newly-renovated shop causing its walls and roof to collapse  at 10.08pm last night.
“The driver then reversed and entered Jalan Hang Kasturi to sideswipe six more shops damaging their walls and roofs and bringing down an electric advertisement board,” he said when contacted by Bernama here, today.
He said the trailer stopped at the Jalan Hang Kasturi-Jonker Walk Junction when the cabin could not clear the narrow passage and its body snagged electric cables belonging to Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).
However, no injuries or loss of life were reported in the incident, said Razali.

Fire razes heritage building in Jonker Walk

MALACCA: A midnight fire razed a century-old heritage building smack in the famous Jonker Walk.

The single-storey building which housed an enterprise selling tarts, pastries and local delicacies went up in smoke at about 11.30pm on Friday when the street was closed to traffic and filled with traders and visitors.

Items in the building could not be salvaged in time as the shop was closed at the time of the fire.

The couple who operated the pastry business in the building was visibly distraught at the scene of the fire. They refused to be interviewed by the press.

Kenny Siang, 48, who had been renting the building from its owner Eng Choon Association for the past six years and who had in turn leased it to the couple, said he was not sure how the building caught fire.

Malacca gov’t firm on opening Jonker Street to traffic
12:32PM Jul 1, 2013

The Malacca government will not budge from its decision to open the streets around Jonker Walk to traffic, in a move to ease congestion in the Bandar Hilir area, until a survey proves otherwise.

NONEIn the past five years, Chief Minister Idris Haron (right) said the state had received over 1,000 complaints from tourists frustrated at the congestion in the area.

“The state will not budge until there is a survey showing the road closure is not the cause of the traffic congestion,” he was quoted in Utusan Malaysia.

However by opening the streets to traffic would mean the closure of the popular Jonker Walk weekend night market.

This is an attraction mooted by the previous chief minister Mohd Ali Rustam, and its closure has resulted in traders and DAP elected representatives to cry foul.

Malacca gov’t willing to listen, but wants trial run
3:13PM Jun 30, 2013

The Malacca government is willing to meet any person on the Jonker Walk controversy, with its tourism deputy exco member Ghazale Muhamad pleading for cooperation to resolve traffic congestion in the area.

“The government is prepared to meet anyone to hear their views. We will see in the coming four weeks whether the closing of the road will result in traffic congestion.

“But for now, the hawkers would not give us space to reopen the road to vehicular traffic on weekends. How are we going conduct tests to reduce congestion?” he was quoted saying in  Malay-daily Sinar Harian today.

The narrow street is closed to traffic from every night from Friday to Sunday for a night market, which is a popular tourist attraction.

Plans to reopen it to traffic to ease traffic congestion has drawn flak, mostly because the Malacca Chief Minister Idris Harun said that it was in response to the Chinese community’s support for DAP.

Two days ago, the hawkers responded by cordoning off the road can conducting business as usual.

3 roads to Jonker closed for good?

TOURISM BOOST: Move will create a permanent trading place

MALACCA: THE Malacca state government is proposing to  permanently close three streets leading to  Jalan Hang Jebat.

Under the proposal, Jalan Hang Lekir, Jalan Hang Lekiu and Jalan Hang Kasturi, which run adjacent to Jalan Hang Jebat, will be closed to traffic and converted into a permanent trading place for traders.

Under the proposal, Jalan Hang Jebat will be opened to traffic. Jalan Hang Lekir, Jalan Hang Lekiu and Jalan Hang Kasturi will also be covered with awning.

State Tourism, Coastal, River and Island Committee Deputy Chairman Datuk Ghazale Mohammad, who has been entrusted by Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Idris Haron to speak to reporters on the issue, said with this plan the Jonker Walk night market could operate seven days a week instead of only during the weekends.

Jonker Walk panel slams DAP as being hypocritical

By R.S.N. MURALI

MALACCA: The Jonker Walk committee has pointed out the irony in DAP’s bid to champion Jonker Walk, saying that the party had opposed the project when it started in 2000.

Malacca DAP leaders had criticised the setting up of Jonker Walk then, saying that it would cause a traffic bottleneck here besides jeopardising its historical status, said Jonker Walk committee deputy chairman Datuk Gan Tian Loo.

Gan accused DAP now of “feigning sympathy” for the affected traders of Jonker Walk, where the state authorities are currently allowing traffic to pass through during weekends in a bid to ease congestion.
…..

Gan admitted that there was a “stalemate” in a meeting with the Chief Minister Datuk Idris Haron to rescind a decision to allow traffic into Jonker Walk.

“The committee will try to meet him again to ask him to look into the predicament of the traders,” he said.

Kota Melaka MP and former state DAP chairman Sim Tong Him admitted that his party leaders had initially opposed the setting up of Jonker Walk.

“It is an old story. Today we are here to give support to the affected traders,” he said.

“Our intention is to state that Jonker Walk is a famous tourist spot and the chief minister should check the facts before coming to a decision,” he said.

He said DAP had protested against Jonker Walk when it opened in 2000 because the project would cause inconveniences to the residents then due to the road closure

“It is a different scenario then and now,” he added.

‘CM trying to score points with Jonker Walk closure?’
3:04PM Jun 29, 2013

DAP has asked if Malacca Chief Minister Idris Haron was attempting to score points for the coming Umno party elections in suggesting the closure of the popular Jonker Walk night market.

“(The closure) can serve three objectives. (One of them is) to make Idris Haron an instant hero and top vote-getter in the Umno party elections at the end of the year.
…..
The other two objectives in closing the popular street market, Lim mused, are to punish Malaccans for not voting for BN in the recent 13th general election, as well as a continuation of the  Chinese-bashing rhetoric of “Apa Lagi Cina Mahu?” (What more do the Chinese want?) initiated by Umno-owned daily Utusan Malaysia.

Traders: Don’t let 13 years of blood and sweat go to waste

Jonker Walk traders who came to set up their stalls last night in defiance of the Malacca government’s move to reopen Jonker Street to traffic were able to do so because parties opposing the state’s move had cordoned off the road.

The Malacca government’s plan has thrown traders like Su Eng, 64, and her 65-year-old husband into uncertainty about their fate.

The couple and some 300 other traders were able to open their stalls along Jonker Walk after leaders and members of both MCA and DAP turned up, opposing the closure of Jonker Walk by cordoning off the road.

Su Eng jonker hawkerHowever, political stunts like this will not last forever and with the political parties having left the scene, the couple now face an uncertain future.

Hunched over on small plastic chairs next to their drink stall, Su (above, left) reflected: “We have been here, right from the start, for 13 years.

“Back then, we had nothing. There was no electricity, we had to provide our own battery lights and it was very tough.

“But we pushed through. We have been here every weekend… every weekend. I don’t think we missed even one.”

She turns to look at her husband, with pride in her face, and he nods his head in affirmation.

“The government has been very supportive (of the stalls). Now we have electricity, they have built this market up,” and she adds, “now that the market is stable, they want to tear it down,” as her voice begins to crack.

“This market is very famous, people come here, from all over the world… it will be sad to see it go,” Su’s husband adds.
…..

“I think the move is political,” said Lee (left). “They just say it is for the traffic, but the traffic was the same last year and it hasn’t changed now. Just after the general election, they want to close it (the market)… traffic congestion is not true.”

Let’s keep politics out of people’s safety in Jonker Walk

MP SPEAKS Yesterday evening, I joined the Members of Parliament for Gelang Patah, Seremban, Rasah, Bakri and of course, Kota Melaka and Bukit Katil, to visit and protest the Umno’s political vengeance against Malaccans by opening Jonker Walk to motor traffic.

The visit and protest attracted hundreds of people who unanimously demanded that the Malacca state government withdraws the order to the Malacca City Council to open up Jonker Walk, a celebrated tourist landmark in Malaysia that is famed for its weekend night market.
…..

The visit to Jonker Walk also reaffirmed our fears about the safety of the people when it is clear that there is no way a car can pass through the road with the traders on the streets, what more reopening the road to two-way traffic!
…..

The new Malacca chief minister must act like a leader and not a petty, cowardly politician. We are more than happy to fight “politics” with BN in the state assembly or in Parliament.

However, let’s keep politics out of the interest, safety and livelihood of the people of Malacca and Malaysia. The Malacca state government must immediately withdraw the order to re-open Jonker Walk to traffic during weekend evenings, not wait for someone to get seriously hurt.

Jonker Walk: Small protests but business as usual at tourist spot

By RSN MURALI

MALACC: It was business as usual Friday night at the iconic Jonker Walk night market despite the new ruling to allow cars in.

Motorists were diverted from entering the tourist spot at 5pm by traffic policemen and officers from the Malacca Historic City Council.

Others were turned away due to a small protest staged by the MCA and DAP, with some shouting “Save Jonker Walk” and holding placards.

Traders and hawkers opened their stalls as usual. Others formed a human barricade to prevent motorists from using the pedestrian mall.

The council’s officers also refrained from taking action against the traders and kept watch from a distance.

A brief stand-off came as leaders from the political parties claimed credit of trying to save Jonker Walk.

“Where was DAP 13 years ago, you’re the first to oppose when Jonker made its debut,” shouted an MCA leader.

A pandemonium was triggered when several traders shouted at motorists who had parked their vehicles during operating hours.

The situation eased when Kota Melaka MCA Youth deputy chief Dr Yee Kok Wah was seen directing cars out of the area.

DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang delivered a speech at a makeshift stage.

High drama as both MCA and DAP ‘defend’ Jonker Walk

As evening approached, Jonker Street in Malacca appeared visibly empty except for the occasional passing car and other vehicles parked over the faded stall lots on both side of the road.

The fate of the popular Jonker Walk night market there appeared uncertain as the state government had ordered the road to be opened to traffic, making it impossible for traders to conduct their business.

NONEBy 5pm, at the far end of the street, a small group of DAP state representatives, clad in black ‘Save Jonker Walk’ T-shirts had assembled and were preparing to cordon off the road in defiance of a state government directive.

However, a group of over 100 MCA supporters a stone’s throw away beat DAP to it as they moved to close off one end of road, chanting “Cordon off Jonker Street” and holding up banners such as ‘Traffic jam is a joke’ – mocking the state government’s justification of its directive.

Malacca MCA chief Gan Tian Loo, who is also the Jonker Walk committe deputy chairperson, was among the crowd.

It is Jonker Walk, not Jonker Drive, Nazri reminds CM

Tourism Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz says he hopes that Jonker Walk would remain closed to traffic on weekends after a four-week trial period where it is to be opened to traffic.

He said he had advised Chief Minister Idris Haron not to reopen it to traffic, because tourism is a major contributor to Malacca’s economy and Jonker Walk is one of its ‘must-see’ attractions.

“Even its name is ‘Jonker Walk’, meaning it is for pedestrians to walk on and not be limited to the sidewalks.

“The people must walk on the street. It is Jonker Walk, it is not Jonker Drive,” he said at a press conference today.

Nazri said he hopes that Idris would review the decision, and pledged that he would work to ensure the road is to be closed on weekends after the trial period has ended.

Jonker Walk stirs concern

Jonker Walk has been in operation for 13 years and has about 300 stalls.

Last Sunday, about 100 traders staged a walkabout protest of the closure.

Meanwhile, in GEORGE TOWN, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the action of the Malacca state government was vindictive as it appeared to be in response to losing seats in the last general election.

He said it did not augur well for responsible economic policy-making and nation-building.

Opposition MPs also agree that the “traffic problem” reason given for the closure is a “cover up”, as Idris had reportedly admitted that it was due to the swing in people’s votes from MCA to DAP.

Citing a Chinese daily, Tony Pua (Petaling Jaya Utara-DAP) quoted Idris from a news report: “Now, we see most of the Malacca residents fully supporting DAP over MCA candidates, who have been serving them. Hence, we decided to cancel the night market and we hope they will be happy”.

300 Jonker Walk Traders to continue business as usual

June 26, 2013

About 300 traders in Jonker Walk could continue their business as usual every weekend, said Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Idris Haron today.

Idris said the order to shut down the stalls which were mainly selling souvenirs was just a misunderstanding but the issue only involved traffic flow in the area.

The Chief Minister of Malacca says he did not shut down Jonker Walk. He merely reopened the roads previously closed to make way for the popular weekend night market.

However, according to a letter sent to the Jonker Walk committee last Thursday, it clearly stated that hawkers are not allowed to set up stalls on the roads, or place their business tools around the area.

Pua jumps into Jonker Walk issue, saying there’s a cover-up

By Elizabeth Zachariah
June 26, 2013

Tony Pua has accused Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz of “covering up” the Malacca state government’s closure of Jonker Street.

The PJ Utara MP said that while Nazri had seemingly “appealed” to Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Idris Haron not to close down the popular tourist spot,  he had also reached a “compromise’ with Idris.

“Nazri claimed that the CM had ordered Jonker Street to be closed for four weeks to study the traffic flow.

“This is a compromise and it is unacceptable,” Pua said.

He said that this was because idris himself had admitted the move was an act of retaliation against the non-Malay community in Malacca.

“I have with me a copy of the memo issued by the mayor of Malacca city council which instructed the full closure of the market, wih no mention of the so-called traffic study.”

Malacca CM’s Jonker Walk statement a ‘lie’

Malacca Chief Minister Idris Haron “lied” when he said that Jonker Walk will only be closed for four weeks on a trial basis, a DAP MP said today.

NONEPetaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua (left) told reporters during a press conference outside of Dewan Rakyat today that this is based on a circular issued to the Malacca City mayor which contradicts Idris’ statement.

According to the circular issued by the Malacca state executive council, the Jonker Walk must remain open to traffic hereafter, and not on a trial basis.

The circular also states that the hawkers there will no longer be allowed to set up stalls at any part of the road.

‘Jonker Walk not being closed, only roads reopened’
11:17AM Jun 26, 2013

Malacca Chief Minister Idris Haron (below) has clarified that the state executive council did not order Jonker Walk be closed down but merely reopened the roads previously closed to make way for the popular weekend night market.

NONE“There was confusion because my previous statement has been misinterpreted. The previous state executive council meeting has never ordered the businesses along the road at Jonker Walk to be closed down.

“I just ordered the roads previously closed every Saturday and Sunday to be reopened for traffic to avoid congestion in the city of Malacca,” he told Utusan Malaysia yesterday.

By TASHNY SUKUMARAN and MICHELLE TAM

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will discuss the closure of Jonker Street night market with the Malacca state government, he said in Parliament on Wednesday.

He was responding to Gelang Patah MP and DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang’s claim that the closure of Jonker Street night market was punishment of voters who did not vote for Barisan Nasional.

AFTER GE13, UTUSAN CALLED FOR THE PUNISHMENT OF THE CHINESE FOR TURNING AWAY FROM BARISAN NASIONAL.

In Malacca, Chief Minister Idris Haron closes down Jonker walk to punish the Chinese for turning away from MCA.

Kwong Wah Daily quoted Idris as saying, “Now, we see most of the Malacca residents fully supporting DAP over MCA candidates, who have been serving them. Hence, we decided to cancel the night market and we hope they will be happy.”

He admitted that MCA’s electoral defeat in the state prompted the closure of Jonker Walk.

Wee: Closure of Jonker Street not justified

MCA Youth chief Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has opposed the Malacca state government’s decision to close down the renowned tourist attraction Jonker Street, saying it is unjustifiable.

Speaking to reporters at Parliament building today, Wee suggested that the decision to close down the street was wrong as it would negatively affect the state’s economy.

“Jonker Street has been there for years and it is a popular spot for tourists. I real cannot find any justification to close it done. Perhaps we should at the bigger picture, but for now there is no strong reason to close it.

“It is one of the most famous tourist designations in Malacca and it generates a lot of revenue for the state and country,” he said.

Tourism minister wants Jonker Walk to stay open

Tourism Minister Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz has appealed to Malacca Chief Minister Idris Haron not to close down the Jonker Walk night market.

NONENazri (left) told reporters outside of the Dewan Rakyat today that the night market is an essential part of Malacca’s tourism sector and should not be closed.

“I spoke to the CM today, and he told me that it will be closed for four weeks as a trial to see if closing down the market alleviates traffic problems there,” Nazri said.

Nazri added that he hoped the CM “would think” about the closure of the night market again at the conclusion of four weeks.

‘Closing down of Jonker Walk not a punishment’

Tourism Minister Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz has denied that the Jonker Walk night market has been closed down in order to punish Chinese hawkers who did not support MCA and the government in the May 5 general election.

“It’s just an accusation that is not true. I don’t think we want to punish (the Chinese). I am an Umno minister and I have nothing personal against the Chinese,” he said.

“I spoke to the CM today, and he told me that it will be closed for four weeks as a trial to see if closing down the market alleviates traffic problems there.”

Nazri added that he hoped the CM “would think” about the closure of the night market again at the conclusion of four weeks.

“Malacca is not the only place for tourism (in Malaysia), so I hope the CM would think about this properly,” he said.

NONE“I appealed to him, saying that Jonker Street has been around for 13 years; and I said Malaccans should have known better after 13 years to adapt to this (the road’s closure for the night market).”

“After 13 years, I’m sure you can adapt to this by having a system,” Nazri added.

“Don’t do things that can hurt tourism. If there’s no tourism, then there’s nothing in Malacca,” he stressed.

Jonker Street must never be shut down, say traders

MALACCA: About 100 traders staged a walkabout in Jonker Street to protest the state government’s decision to shut down the famous weekend Jonker Walk.

Carrying placards written in Chinese, the group gathered at about 9pm on Sunday at a stage near the area.

They started chanting “Jonker Walk to stay forever” and “No shutting down of Jonker Walk” as they marched towards the arch near the Tamil Methodist Church for a group photograph before they continued to the Heritage Park.

One of the traders, Yeoh Kim Cheng, said the protest was to bring to the state government’s attention the predicament they faced, adding that “Jonker Street must not simply be shut down”.

“To say Jonker Walk causes traffic jams is a ridiculous excuse,” he said.

“Many traders and residents have benefited economically since the street was turned into a pedestrian mall 13 years ago.”

Another trader, Chong Dek Fah, said they would continue operating their business on Friday despite the state’s and local council’s order to vacate the street for traffic by Thursday.

It had been announced recently that the area would be opened to traffic every day instead of being closed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.

Traders have been prohibited from conducting any business on the road.
…..

The protest ended at 9.45pm when police officers from a mobile unit nearby advised the group to disperse.

WHAT WILL IT DO TO MALACCA’S STATUS AS A HERITAGE CITY?

The Historical City Of Malacca

Welcome to Malacca World Heritage City. On this site you
will find comprehensive listing with information on almost
every aspect of visiting and living in Malacca.

Jonker Walk (Night Market)

Jonker Walk Night Market is a weekly night market that takes place along Jalan Hang Jebat, the main street through Malacca town. It is located within the core zone of the Malacca Unesco World Heritage Site. Jonker Walk Night Market, the brainchild of the local tourism board, was intended to bring life to the street at night.

Although Jonker Walk Night Market was successful in creating street life on weekends, it also faced criticism, coming from the residents of Jonker Street and nearby streets, as well as from historians and conservationists. Residents lament that since Jonker Walk Night Market was created, they face much difficulty reaching their homes on weekends – the entire street being turned into a pedestrian mall. Also, they complained of the noise, pollution and trash that the night market created. This resulted in some residents of Jalan Hang Jebat moving out. However, in their place come new commercial establishments.

Conservationists and historians were also not particularly enthusiastic about Jonker Walk Night Market. They were critical of the quality of merchandise, which are not reflective of the initial intention of the night market, to showcase heritage products. To them, it was just another night market selling China-made products. So far, the tourist do not seem to mind. And neither do the businesses on market nights.

IT LOOKS LIKE THE MINISTRY OF TOURISM WILL HAVE TO TAKE DOWN ITS POST ON JONKER WALK!

Jonker Walk

A definite haven for antique collectors and bargain hunters. Authentic artifacts and relics, some dating as far back as 300 years, can be found among a host of interesting collectibles, each with its own history and mystery.

Jalan Hang Jebat, formerly known as Jonker Street, is known worldwide among serious antique collectors as one of the best places to hunt and bargain for antiques.

Recently, a new wave of cafes and craft shops have sprouted on this street, lending it a cultured air of old-meets-new.

Opposition: Closure of Jonker Walk is political retaliation
5:15PM Jun 24, 2013

The Malacca government’s decision to shut down the historic city’s popular weekend night market, Jonker Walk, has been described as “political retaliation against Chinese voters” who backed the opposition in the May 5 general election.

The DAP’s Kesidang assemblyperson Chin Choong Seong questioned the justification given by Malacca Chief Minister Idris Haron that the decision was made after MCA’s abysmal showing in GE13.

“Obviously this is an undemocratic retaliation by the BN against the Chinese community, by creating fear. Such a shameful act will not achieve its objective. Instead, it will alienate the people more,” Chin said in a statement issued today.

I find this unbelievable, – which idiotic twerp came up with this little gem ???, i am an Englishman who has visited Malaysia several times, and although Malaysia is a beautiful country without doubt, it seriously has little to attract tourism, and the tourist dollars, and by taking away Jonker Walk from Melaka which on my visits, hummed with life from all nationalities what on earth is there to attract visitors. – The answer is simple – VERY LITTLE. and still less for the youngsters, both Chinese and Malay alike.
Can you imagine what would happen here in the UK if the government was stupid enough to to close Petticoat lane, or Kings road Chelsea, the answer is simple the tourists would simply go elsewhere, and this is precisely what will happen there, the Hotels will struggle to fill and the nearby shops will suffer as well.
I understand this is a government ploy to punish the Chinese for voting for the opposition, i have no interest in politics, but all i can say is they have shot themselves in their own foot and deservedly so,it is a decision of utter ineptitude, sheer lunacy and nothing less!!!!
As Jonker Walk is world renowned i suppose all the Travel shops worldwide will now have to advise potential visitors to avoid Melaka like the plague, or die of terminal boredom….I pity all the businesses there , Malay and Chinese alike being dragged back into the dark ages all for the sake of a petty squabble.

  3. Anak Melaka's avatar Anak Melaka says:

Tourism is the No 1 economic industry in Melaka. The state govt should be safeguarding tourism revenue for Melaka peoples; vis-a-vis current global economic malaise, & also state govt debt! Is this rakyat didahulukan? The repercussions of this move implicate various peoples…

  4. Is this good governance? Is governance Based on vendetta and emotions or should it be based on ethics and the well being of all? Time for the ruling government to show it is capable of good governance.

  5. Nicholas Aw's avatar Nicholas Aw says:

To say that Jonker Walk causes traffic jams is the flimsiest excuse. It is definitely political revenge. If the Malacca government is really serious about tackling the traffic problems, come up with better solutions. The way I look at it, Jonker Walk has nothing to do with traffic jams in Melaka. Most of the traffic congestion occurs along Jalan Bendahara (formerly Wolferston Road) stretching right up to the Mahkota Parade/Pahlawan Mall area and beyond into Melaka Raya.
