JOHOR BAHRU: The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, has consented to his son, Tunku Mahkota Tunku Ismail, contesting the post of Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president in the elections on March 25.
The decision was made during a closed-door meeting for about an hour between Sultan Ibrahim and the representatives of 14 FAM affiliates at Istana Pasir Pelangi here today.
The affiliates were the football associations (FA) of Malacca, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Terengganu, Kedah, Perlis, Felda and the Malaysian Armed Forces as well as the Chinese FA, Malay FA, Indian FA and the Football Coaches Association Malaysia.
Six other associations, namely Kelantan, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Royal Malaysian Police, Perak and Penang, did not attend the meeting.
Mohd Yusof Mahadi, a representative of the affiliates, said he did not foresee any problem for Tunku Ismail to contest the post.
“is Royal Highness (Sultan Ibrahim) actually wanted to know our determination and support for his son to contest the post, and he agreed after he was satisfied.
“We also assume that with the decision, Tunku Ismail agrees to contest because all along he often mentioned that the obstacle to him accepting the nomination to contest was because he did not have the consent of his father,” he said to reporters after the meeting.

“I will go on the world stage and tell the world during the World Football Summit how corrupt FAM is and I will tell it all.”
Crown Prince of Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has vowed to expose alleged corruption by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) when he addresses the World Football Summit in Madrid.
Tunku Ismail claimed that the FAM was involved in corrupt practices by changing the standings of the recently-concluded Malaysia Super League.
This, according to Tunku Ismail, was an attempt to save Pahang and PDRM from relegation because both clubs enjoy good ties with the FAM.
Both Pahang and PDRM had the results of a game overturned two months after the games were played, which Tunku Ismail noted was not allowed because teams can only lodge protests within 72 hours after a game is played.
“So this is the issue. How do you save PDRM? Deduct three points from JDT (Johor football club). The obvious course of action is that Pahang should be relegated.
“Two months have lapsed and the statute clearly states that no teams are allowed to protest or express their objections 72 hours after the game. Those are the rules,” said Tunku Ismail.
As a result of the adjustment to the league standings, Penang would be relegated instead. Tunku Ismail also alleged that the FAM had schemed to relegate Penang because of issues with the club’s manager.
Tunku Ismail said since he is now in Madrid for the World Football Summit, he will raise these issues with the international football community.
“I am currently in Madrid where I will give a speech regarding our efforts in helping Malaysian football and football in the South-East Asian region.
TMJ, “Maybe it’s time for football supporters of this country to see the truth and judge for themselves. I have a commander in India who always says, ‘don’t invite a sniper to a shooting range’.”
