The uprising begins: Monkeys steal secret documents at Malacca army camp

Singapore’s media pick up the story…

And this is NOT the first incident at the camp.

Confidential military documents in an army camp in Malacca, Malaysia have been stolen in a ‘robbery’ — by monkeys.

The Star reports that the ‘thieves’ were at Terendak Camp and grabbed the secret documents from an unsuspecting postman who was on his routine rounds on Jul 31.

In a matter of seconds, the animals were on top of trees and a building roof.

The troop of long-tailed macaques also left the 33-year-old postman injured. Police now face the tough task of tracking down the “thieves” after a report was lodged.

It is learnt that the three stolen documents were considered important and the postman had detailed the serial number of the documents in his report.

Malacca National Park and Wildlife Department’s director Noorzakiahanum Mohd Noh described the primates at the army camps as a “bit mischievous” and said they were bold and aggressive.

Rangers have placed traps at the camp and avoided using any weapons.

She also noted that there have been previous cases. The most daring one was at the Terendak Camp hospital 18 months ago when they broke into a soldier’s car and stole all his belongings including his scuba diving gear, driving licences, ATM cards and cash.

There has been a long tradition of employing animals in military operations. The latest example might be China’s troop of macaque soldiers.

According to a report in the Washington Post, the People’s Liberation Army revealed that they’ve trained a small troop of macaques at one of their air bases, somewhere in northern China. From the photos, I can’t quite tell which macaque species they appear to be. The genus Macaca is one of the most widespread primate genera (second only to our own, Homo) with twenty-two recognized species.

The monkey warriers aren’t fighting in battle. Instead, they’re guarding the air base from birds, who too often get themselves caught up in aircraft engines.

Perhilitan to identify methods to control monkeys around Terendak Camp

By ROSHIDI ABU SAMAH AND KELLY KOH

MALACCA: The local authority and the state National Park and Wildlife Department (Perhilitan) have been urged to identify appropriate methods to control the aggressiveness of monkeys which roam the Terendak Camp in Sungai Udang here.
.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said if this was done the monkeys would not be a problem to the people who live and work in the army camp. He believed there were several methods which could be implemented to scare the monkeys.

Idris said the local authority and the National Park and Wildlife Department should find some method to prevent the monkeys from triggering unfortunate incidents in the area in future.
.
He however said he would not allow the monkeys to be killed.
.
“Any act to kill the monkeys in order to control their mischief and aggressive behaviors will only lead to fierce criticism from the public,” he said, adding that problems created by wild monkeys had occurred in many other areas in Sungai Udang.
.
Dealing with the mischievous troops of monkeys has became a norm for army residents at the camp.
.

Soldiers and their dependents acknowledged that the whirly monkeys were a nuisance at the camp by marauding administration offices, canteen, residential areas and even the mosques in search for food.

Army: Monkeys stole regular mail, not military secrets

zx.jpg

The monkeys who attacked a postman at a military camp in Malacca two days ago, only stole regular mail, and not military secrets, the army said.

“The incident as reported by the media, did not involve military documents classified as secret.

“The letters involved were just regular registered posts,” the army said in a statement today.

It said the armed forces has its own controlled mail delivery system to protect the security of classified documents.
