A SELFIE IS A TYPE OF SELF-TAKEN PHOTOGRAPH. We take it with a hand-held digital camera or hand phone cameras. In the latest development, it may be taken with a foot-held handphone camera!
The Oxford Dictionary has named selfie the word of the year, narrowly beating out twerk.

The police are aware of the selfie shots taken by the brothers that have gone viral but investigations showed that the accident was not Muhammad Yusriman’s fault.
“Preliminary investigations showed that the accident was caused by a trailer driver who lost control of his vehicle. As for the selfies taken by the Proton Saga occupants, we are unable to tell for now on when it was taken. We are investigating the trailer driver and will record statements from all the surviving victims to conclude what happened,” he said.

IPOH: The passengers of the vehicle involved in the deadly crash on Km256 of the North-South Expressway, after the Menora Tunnel, near here on Saturday morning, were believed to be taking a selfie with a monopod moments before the accident happened.
The alleged selfie act has gone viral on social media.

Meanwhile, a Bernama report stated that in the incident, a family trip home to celebrate Aidiladha ended in tragedy when a mother and her daughter were killed in the crash.
Norhayati Wook, 50, and Siti Yuslianis Roslan, 20, a student of Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin died at the scene from severe head injuries while three other siblings suffered minor injuries.
Muhammad Yusriman, 23, who was driving the Proton Saga BLM, when met at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital here, could not stop muttering sadly: “I’m sorry mom” as he felt guilty over the incident.
He claimed that a trailer, which had been hit by another trailer from behind, crashed into the rear of the car he was driving.
“There was a loud sound. I think the trailer driver failed to brake in time. My siblings were screaming and glasses were smashed,” he told reporters.
He said members of the public helped them out of the car.
“We were on the way from Bukit Sentosa, Rawang to Lenggong as my mother and father are from there,” he said.
He and his brother Muhammad Yusrizal, 25, suffered minor injuries while their younger sister Siti Yusliana, 12, suffered cuts on her heels.

People flocking restaurant for selfies with 152kg grouper
Catch of the day: Workers scaling the huge grouper to be served at the restaurant in Alor Setar.
ALOR SETAR: This isn’t a fishy tale at all. Countless people flocked to a seafood restaurant here to take selfies with a 152kg grouper, which had become a “star attraction” after it was purchased from a fish wholesaler at a price tag of RM9,120.
The 2.1m fish was so heavy that it took four people to hang it up for viewing at the Hai Jing Seafood Restaurant in Jalan Mahdali here.
…
Commonly known as loong tan or kerapu harimau, fish wholesaler Ng Kong Yoong, 37, said this was the biggest catch he came across since he started business three years ago in Kuala Kedah.
…
Ng later sold it to the restaurant for RM9,120.

Obama Refuses to Take Selfie With Young Girl, but Takes One With Malaysia’s PM
Society’s selfie obsession rages on
Well, here’s more proof that the selfie epidemic is still running rampant.
President Barack Obama landed in Malaysia on Saturday, and by Sunday, he’d already taken a selfie with the nation’s Prime Minister, Najib Razak.
Najib tweeted the photo:
It’s kind of awkward, right? Well, what makes it even more awkward is the fact that just days before, during his visit to Seoul, Obama totally denied a 13-year-old girl a selfie of her own.
After the President spoke to U.S. troops in South Korea, he spotted the girl holding a sign that read, “Mr. President May I Have a Selfie With You?” He did not fulfill her request, so this selfie with Najib is some major salt in her emotional wounds.

13-Year-Old Girl Gets a Presidential Selfie Snub From Obama
How sad is this?
In anticipation of President Obama’s visit to the U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan in Seoul, South Korea, today, 13-year-old Mika Taylor and her friends stood holding a bright orange sign with large block letters. The message was unmistakable: “MR. PRESIDENT MAY I HAVE A SELFIE WITH YOU?”
But the girl did not get her wish.
Obama worked his way down the rope line finally arriving where Taylor was standing with her sign. But the president took a pass, saying if he did it for her, he’d have to do it for everyone.
“Just take a picture of me as I’m going by,” Obama told her, according to TV pooler Bret Hovell of CBS News who overheard the conversation.

Selfie diplomacy backfires at home and abroad

Judging from reactions both at home and abroad, selfie diplomacy, a trick Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak just learnt and has been eager to flaunt, may be fast reaching its use-by date.
Even United States president Barack Obama has been viewed dimly for his penchant to take selfies, with his latest he took with Najib lambasted by media and observers in the US.
Najib’s awkward selfie complete with a duck face (a term to refer to the slight pouting of the lips to enhance cuteness), last Sunday with Obama may have gotten a lot of eyeballs. But along with it, came the large swell of ridicule that had been kept at bay since Najib started experimenting with this youth culture phenomenon.
Judging from the memes that have been circulating online, Malaysian netizens who had held back at Najib’s selfies with Singapore’ Lee Hsien Loong, Turkey’s Tayyip Erdogan and Indonesia’s Susilo Bambang Yudhuyono, seemed unable to help it this time around.
In some ways, the Obama-Najib power selfie may have just been asking for it.
In the gaping space between Najib and Obama in the much-circulated selfie, netizens have now added a cheeky looking Anwar Ibrahim, the PKR de facto leader who made quite a scene over not being invited to meet Obama.

See The First “Selfie” In History Taken by Robert Cornelius, a Philadelphia Chemist, in 1839
in History, Photography | November 23rd, 2013
…
On November 19, the Oxford Dictionaries announced that “selfie” had been deemed their Word of The Year. The term, whose first recorded use as an Instagram hashtag occurred on January 27, 2011, was actually invented in 2002, when an Australian chap posted a picture of himself on an internet forum and called it a “selfie”. While devices for taking photos of oneself have been available for many years prior to the proliferation of the smartphones responsible for this phenomenon, the history of the selfie dates back to the origins of photography itself.
As the Public Domain Review notes, the first recorded instance of the selfie harkens back to what may have been the first photographic portrait. In 1839, a young Philadelphia chemist named Robert Cornelius stepped out of his family’s store and took a photograph of himself:
He took the image by removing the lens cap and then running [into the] frame where he sat for a minute before covering up the lens again. On the back he wrote “The first light Picture ever taken. 1839.”

Taking Our Selfies Seriously
By DANIEL MENAKER
Published: November 23, 2013
“Selfie” is the newly crowned champion word of the year by Oxford Dictionaries. It means a photograph taken of oneself by oneself but usually not for oneself — rather for the whole world — on a cellphone camera.
Many “selfies” look like their subjects are singing an aria or welcoming a guest or hailing a cab, because of the necessarily outstretched arm that precedes the hand that precedes the finger that clicks the picture, often after a previous, poorly aimed picture of one’s feet or something more embarrassing. Delete.
…
Soon enough “selfies” will be history and we’ll be on to something more absurd. In fact, it must already be happening: People asking other people to take pictures of them taking pictures of themselves and posting the Möbius-like result as — what? I’m sure there will be a word for it tomorrow.

Hopey (Nathan Hope), “It was not a word I coined. It’s something that was just common slang at the time, used to describe a picture of yourself. Fairly simple.”

No, a Drunken Australian Man Did Not Coin the Word Selfie
….what made the selfie news especially juicy was Oxford’s identification of the earliest known example of the word, in a 2002 science forum post on the website of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. In a discussion about dissolvable stitches, a poster calling himself “Hopey” recounted:
Um, drunk at a mates 21st, I tripped ofer and landed lip first (with front teeth coming a very close second) on a set of steps. I had a hole about 1cm long right through my bottom lip. And sorry about the focus, it was a selfie.
The post was accompanied by Hopey’s out-of-focus selfie displaying his stitched-up lip.
…
Soon there were entire articles devoted to Hopey—such as The Telegraph‘s “Australian man ‘invented the selfie after drunken night out’“—complete with the gruesome close-up of his lip and the dissolvable stitches.
![]()
In Australia, Hopey quickly became a celebrity. Since his post appeared on the ABC’s website, it’s not surprising that ABC News was the one that tracked the man down and revealed his identity. His name, it turns out, is Nathan Hope—naturally, “Hopey” was formed by the same hypocoristic method that turned self-portrait into selfie.
Hope expressed genuine puzzlement that his long-forgotten forum post, complete with misspellings, had become international news, along with the photo of his busted-up lip. And he dispelled the idea that he was somehow responsible for the word. “It was not a word I coined. It’s something that was just common slang at the time, used to describe a picture of yourself. Fairly simple.”
