Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) Update: 1,000 Feared Dead in Philippines, U.S. Pledges Aid
Published: Nov 9, 2013, 7:40 PM EST weather.com
The central Philippine city of Tacloban was in ruins Saturday, a day after being ravaged by one of the strongest typhoons on record, as horrified residents spoke of storm surges as high as trees and authorities said they were expecting a “very high number of fatalities.”
At least 151 people were confirmed dead and five more were missing in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan and over 4 million are reported to have been affected by the disaster. But Philippine Red Cross Secretary General Gwen Pang said that agency field staff in the region estimated the toll was about 1,000. Pang, however, emphasized that it was “just an estimate.”
President Benigno Aquino III said the casualties “will be substantially more,” but gave no figure or estimate. He said the government’s priority was to restore power and communications in isolated areas to allow for the delivery of relief and medical assistance to victims.

Failon sadly recalled his experience when he and his crew went to one of the schools which was turned into an evacuation center for children and elderly.
The school in Fisherman’s Village is located at Barangay 88 in Tacloban City.
(Blogger: Google translation: It pong evacuation center it withstand strong winds he still there for those roofs, those buildings still intact but no survivors from the sea tide due po penetration of building one from the sea to the story with us my napanayam. “
“I am Facing the bodies and basically pong tragic their situation … young, old overtook‘s more we are foaming at the mouth due to drowning please,” he said.
“Sorry handed nagiiyakan the relatives because they had lost three, four, five members of their family,” said Failon.)
An aerial shot of Tacloban also showed the flood-ravaged school and the bodies still inside some of its classrooms.

At least 1,000 killed in Philippine city – Red Cross
MANILA (Reuters) – The Philippine Red Cross estimated that more than 1,000 people were killed in the coastal city of Tacloban and at least 200 in hard-hit Samar province when one of the strongest typhoons ever to make landfall slammed into the country.
Gwendolyn Pang, secretary general of the Philippine Red Cross, said the numbers came from preliminary reports by Red Cross teams in Tacloban and Samar, among the most devastated areas hit by Typhoon Haiyan on Friday.
“An estimated more than 1,000 bodies were seen floating in Tacloban as reported by our Red Cross teams,” she told Reuters. “In Samar, about 200 deaths. Validation is ongoing.”
She said she expected a more exact number to emerge after a more precise counting of bodies on the ground in those regions.

Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) pummelled through the central part of the Philippines on November 8, 2013. It left a storm of destruction in its wake, triggering 12 to 15 feet high storm surges, flooding, and landslides affecting an estimated 4 million people. Children urgently need access to safe water, hygiene supplies, food, shelter and a safe environment to recover.
Our resources are stretched from responding to three emergencies in a row within two months: armed conflict in Zamboanga, the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Bohol–and now, super typhoon Yolanda. We urgently need your help so we can aid those who are severely affected by this latest disaster.

More than 100 bodies are lying in the streets of one Philippine city that was hit by Super Typhoon Haiyan, an aviation authority chief said Saturday.
John Andrews, deputy director general of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, said the Tacloban airport manager had radioed the head office in Manila to report “100-plus dead, lying on the streets, with 100 plus injured”.
“This report was relayed to us by our station manager so it is considered very reliable information,” he told ABS-CBN television in an interview.
“According to the station manager the airport is completely ruined.”
Tacloban is the capital of Leyte, a large island of about two million people that was hit by Haiyan on Friday morning when the storm was at its strongest, knocking out all its communication facilities.
Andrews said the information about the deaths was relayed by high-frequency radio to the authorities.
