Wrong place to rob…

Robbery at French McDonald’s outlet foiled by special forces team who were having their meal

BESANCON (France) — When two men decided to rob a McDonald’s in eastern France they hadn’t expected to come face to face with a table of hungry soldiers from an elite military force.

The armed men burst into the fast food outlet in the commune of Ecole-Valentin late Sunday, with one firing a warning shot while the other raided the till for cash.

But amongst the around 40 diners in the burger joint were 11 members of an elite branch of the French Armed Forces — particularly hardened soldiers who specialise in hostage situations.

The off-duty soldiers waited for the end of the heist to intervene so as not to put other patrons in danger, Besancon public prosecutor Edwige Roux-Morizot said Monday (June 6).

The first man, who was carrying around €2,000 (S$3,083) cash, stumbled as he attempted to flee and was captured, while the other was shot in the abdomen by one of the elite forces and arrested.

FIRED: McDonald’s staff who threw water on a homeless man.

American McDonald’s employee fired for tricking and throwing water at homeless man

It happened in Detroit.

An employee at a Detroit McDonald’s is in hot water this week for throwing a drink at a homeless man at the drive-thru window. The very unfunny prank was caught on video and uploaded to LiveLeak on November 6. In the clip, the drive-thru worker calls to the homeless man named Willy off camera offering him a sandwich. As the man approaches the window and reaches for the sandwich, the employee throws a cup of water at his face.

Update, 11/10, 4:52 p.m.: The Detroit Free Press confirms that the McDonald’s employee who played a prank on an area homeless man has been fired. “This type of behavior is not tolerated in my organization. I expect my employees to treat everyone with dignity and respect, and this was unacceptable. This individual no longer works for my organization,” the owner of the restaurant on Grand River near Schaefer, says in a statement. In response to the cruel prank, a woman from Chicago named Christine Ciana Calabrese tells Eater she has started a GoFundMe campaign to provide Willy with food, clothing, and shelter.

TEHRAN — Despite the smiling clown, a symbol of the Great Satan’s love for meat, buns and fries, there were no angry mobs punching fists in the air, shouting “Death to America”; nor did the smell of burnt American flags permeate this Tehran neighbourhood.

It smelled of juicy burgers, flipped by a cheerful Iranian teenager named Jahan. His kitchen was crowned with a flashing logo that looked remarkably similar to the golden arches of McDonald’s, perhaps the best-known symbol of US fast-food imperialism.

The global chain’s other well-known trademark, the white-faced, ever-smiling clown with a red jacket, yellow pants and red oversize shoes, was also present on a large poster waving to lure customers.

This is Mash Donald’s, Iran’s homegrown version.

“We are trying to get as close as we can get to the McDonald’s experience,” said the owner, Mr Hassan, who did not want his family name published out of fear of Iranian hard-liners and US trademark lawyers.

McDonald’s says staff who shouted at elderly woman in Toa Payoh outlet disciplined

A spokesperson for McDonald’s Singapore has said the company has counselled its staff members who allegedly shouted and “mocked” an elderly woman at its Toa Payoh Hub outlet. The incident was widely shared on Facebook after it was posted by a user on Sunday evening.

Ms Carolyn Khiu, director of Corporate Communcations for eCommerce and Customer Relations at McDonald’s, responded to media queries on Wednesday, saying “their actions were contrary to our customer service policy”.

“Firstly, let us be the first to acknowledge that our crew could have managed this better. Their actions were contrary to our customer service policy. The crew members involved have been counselled and disciplinary action has been taken,” said Ms Khiu.

The staff kept screaming and threatened to call the police to chase her away. She blatantly announced that this old lady comes to the restaurant regularly and would ask strangers to buy her a meal.

“The staff even told me off for wanting to pay for the meal, saying that by doing so, I was encouraging this old lady to keep returning,” she wrote.

They relented only when the user personally made the order. Ms Khiu said: “In our discussion with them, the crew have also realised that under no circumstances should they raise their voices at a customer – and they have expressed remorse over the incident.”

In the video, three youths were seen driving up to a drive-through counter at a McDonald’s restaurant and ordering some food.

They were heard laughing and cheering throughout the video, repeatedly saying that they were about to pull a prank.

The actions of the three youths were not well-received by netizens, who said the action was “stupid and immature”.

Only three activists were seen protesting at two McDonald’s outlets in Kuala Lumpur today amidst calls for a national boycott over the Israeli-Gaza conflict.

At the outlet in Bangsar, two activists there claimed “hundreds” of Gaza sympathisers were planning to stage a protest, but did not show up because of police presence.

“At least two hundred protesters did not want to come too near to the restaurant because of the five police who are guarding the scene,” said one of the protesters Amrayy Ahman, who is a member of Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM).

Also present was JMM director Faizan Mohd Nor, who claimed to have organised the NGO’s first protest in Terengganu before staging this second one.

McDonald’s claim staff harassed over Israel boycott

KUALA LUMPUR: McDonald’s Malaysia said their staff had to endure harassment, threats and verbal abuse over the boycott of Israeli-products led by certain parties.

McDonald’s Malaysia issued a press statement on Friday in which it said some of their outlets were subjected to acts of vandalism to the extent that they had to shut down operations for the day.

“The reality is that our employees and franchisees have done nothing wrong and it is grossly unfair that they should be targeted in such a way,” the statement said

The company reiterated its stand that it “does not channel any sales, profits or franchise fees from restaurants to support any political causes or conflicts in any part of the world.

Thousands braved the searing heat at Dataran Merdeka today to protest against Israel’s ongoing assault on Palestine and the loss of innocent lives.

Viva Palestine Malaysia chairman Datuk Dr Musa Mohd Noordin criticised the cruel Zionist regime which he accused of disrespecting human rights.

“For the past 66 years, Palestinians have been fighting to regain what had been stolen from them. Land, property, freedom and their dignity,” Musa told the crowd.

“Palestine has been labelled as the worst modern crisis of recent times by no less than the late Nelson Mandela. He had also said that the world will not be free as long as Palestine was not free.”

After Gaza protest, McD’s fears staff safety risks

McDonald’s restaurants in Malaysia are taking precautionary steps to protect its employees, following an online campaign for a nationwide boycott of the American fast food chain tomorrow.

The boycott was called by Palestine sympathisers, who accuse McDonald’s of channeling funds to Israel, in the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Among others, the delivery personnel are advised not to wear their uniforms tomorrow, so as to not be recognised as McDonald’s employees.

“We were told by the upper management to wear white T-shirts and dark coloured pants for tomorrow,” Rahman Masturi from the Jalan Telawi branch, told Malaysiakini today.

The riders were also directed to remove all logos from the McDonald’s ‘Cooktek’ bags and their delivery vehicles.

Sinar Harian reported that the Kerteh and Dungun outlets saw business plunge by 80 percent as the boycott movement, which sparked soon after the latest Israeli strike on Gaza about a month ago, gained momentum.

Posters urging a day of boycott tomorrow have been circulated online, despite McDonald’s repeatedly explaining in newspaper advertisements that it does not support Israel.

Gaza sympathisers are also called to boycott hypermarket chain Tesco this Saturday, but Tesco, too, denies backing Israel.

Why we chose McDonald’s

McDonald’s is a corporate partner of the Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of Chicago (JUF/JF). The Jewish Federation supports U.S. diplomatic, economic and military assistance to Israel. As part of JUF/JF’s donation scheme, McDonald’s has signed up to the ‘Matching Gift Program’. McDonald’s, and all other companies that partake in the Matching Gift Program, will match, and occasionally treble, donations made by their employees to JUF/JF. “The JUF has opened a special Israel Emergency Campaign with $1 million already advanced to relief efforts on the ground“. This is the means by which McDonald’s helps fund the Israeli government.

List of all participating companies in JUF/JF’s Matching Gift Scheme.

JUF/JF’s “2010 Federal Priorities and Background” booklet, on page 16, contains the following paragraph:

“United States’ support for the State of Israel continues to be vital. American military aid has helped Israel defend herself against Arab enemies and US support has also proven a strong deterrent because Arab states contemplating attacks on Israel know they will confront an American ally. In addition to providing this critical assistance, US leaders have explicitly stated their commitment to Israel’s security against existential threats”.

Below is a segment from the JUF/JF website:

Israel’s Suffering

“Since 2000, terrorists have launched more than 8,000 Qassam rockets from the Gaza Strip into Southern Israel, killing and injuring civilians, damaging homes and businesses and traumatizing citizens of all ages. Among the victims are thousands of terrorized children who suffer from nightmares, night sweats, and other symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.

JUF has been a key player in providing aid to Israel and the embattled residents in and around Sderot, the Southern Israeli city that, until recently, endured the bulk of the missile attacks. Through our Israel Emergency Campaign, JUF has provided more than $32 million to alleviate the impact of that war of terror”. (Source –

Therefore, the business partnerships between McDonald’s et al, and the JUF/JF substantially contribute to the Israeli government.

McDonald’s Malaysia denies funding Zionists in Israel – Bernama

Indeed, it does not support any form of political campaigns, violence or oppression.

McDonald’s fined for mouse tail in burger

Sunday 29 Jun 2014 10:27a.m.

McDonald’s must pay a fine for selling a burger containing the tail of a mouse, a court in Chile has ruled.

The appeals court in the city of Temuco upheld a ruling against the fast-food giant ordering it to pay 2 million pesos (NZ$4132) following the incident in June 2012, according to the court judgment.

McDonald’s must also pay an additional fine but the amount was not specified.

The fine reflects “failures or deficiencies” on behalf of McDonald’s in the quality of its service, the court ruled, accusing the company of “neglect” in its quality control.

Following the incident, health authorities temporarily closed the affected branch in Temuco, about 700km south of the capital Santiago.

McDonald’s Japan blunders but apologizes

A spokesperson for McDonald’s Japan was quick to condemn a western Tokyo store that had established a policy against letting homeless people (in)…Apparently management at the Hachioji store had put a sign out front, more than a year ago no less, reading, “Those whom we deem unfit to use our store, including the unclean and the homeless, are asked not to enter.”

The fast-food location in question is open 24/7, and claimed that it had been targeted by homeless rabble-rousers in the past. But as Japan Times reports, online commenters reacting to the story thought the sign was just a perfectly reasonable way to keep McDonald’s “free of bad smell,” which seems to be the real issue…

Thankfully, the sign has now been replaced with one announcing that the store reserves the right to boot anyone “likely to cause trouble to others” by being loud, or sleeping, or just, you know, smelling foul.

A sign at a Tokyo McDonald’s instructed workers to refuse entry to people deemed “improper”, citing poor hygiene and homelessness as examples.

MCDONALD’S Japan has issued an apology after it was revealed one of its outlets had posted a notice banning homeless people for more than a year.

The notice, which had triggered an online debate, said staff at the west Tokyo branch “would refuse entry to people deemed improper”, citing poor hygiene and homelessness as examples.

But the global fast food giant said on Friday that following complaints, the sign had been replaced, and now made no mention of homelessness.

“Even though the purpose of the notice was for other customers to be able to feel comfortable in the outlet, some of the words it used were inappropriate, and we apologise for that,” a company spokesman said.

The new sign states that entry will be refused to those deemed likely to “cause trouble to other customers, such as by making a rumpus with loud voices, sleeping and having poor hygiene”.

The spokesman added that all other outlets in the country had been instructed to ensure notices are free from discriminatory language.
