Jakim blames media, says ‘pretzel dog’ name not the issue

Jakim halal division director Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee said his words were taken out of context and blown out of proportion by the media.

When contacted by The Star Online on Tuesday, however, he said that Jakim had recommended the name change for “pretzel dog” in order for Auntie Anne’s to receive a halal certification.

He had also said that a Jakim panel had decided not to use such a name.

On Thursday, when met outside the Parliament lobby, Dr Sirajuddin said that the pretzel chain’s application for halal certification had failed due to incomplete paperwork.

He claimed his previous remark on dogs being unclean and that the word “dog” should not be linked to the halal certification, adding that it was a general statement and not specific to Auntie Anne’s case.

American Islamic scholar blasts Jakim as ‘ignorant’ for refusing halal status for Auntie Anne’s ‘pretzel dogs’
.

KOTA KINABALU: A visiting Islamic scholar from the United States has labelled the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) ‘ignorant’ for refusing to grant halal status to Auntie Anne’s ‘pretzel dogs’.
.
Prominent Islamic scholar Azhar Haneef was quoted by a local daily as saying it is “ridiculous and small-minded to think that by changing a name, something becomes lawful (or) unlawful.
.
“The object is exactly the same. If I stand on the border of two nations, does it make half of me a believer and the other half an infidel?” he said.
.
He stressed that such ignorance could create “a destructive effect on peace-loving and tolerant societies” and warned it would breed intolerance.
.
Haneef, who has been an imam and missionary for 26 years, was in Sabah to give a talk at the Promoting Peace and Tolerance in a Multiracial Society forum held at the Palace Hotel here yesterday.
.

The forum was organised by the Labuan and Sabah Humanitarian Welfare Association, in collaboration with the International Human Rights Committee, United Kingdom.

Hot dogs ‘must be renamed’ in Malaysia, says religious government body

Food outlets selling hot dogs in Malaysia have been asked to rename their products or risk being refused halal certification.

The Malaysian Islamic Development Department, a religious government body, said it adopted the ruling after complaints from Muslim tourists.

Director Sirajuddin Suhaimee said the name might cause “confusion”.

“In Islam, dogs are considered unclean and the name cannot be related to halal certification,” he said.

Malaysian halal food guidelines say “halal food and halal artificial flavour shall not be named or synonymously named after non-halal products such as ham, bak kut teh, bacon, beer, rum and others that might create confusion,” local media said.

The ruling has also garnered ridicule and stirred debate among Malaysians on social media.

“It’s just a name, what does it have to do with whether it’s halal or not? Muslims should be more concerned with ingredients and the way food is prepared,” wrote Eeman Yusof on Facebook.

“You can always count on the authorities to make us look stupid,” said another Malaysian Matt Razal.

Another Facebook user said: “Pet shops please rename your dogs as sausages.”

Is Jakim halal?

http://www.christianity.com/bible/dictionary.php?dict=ebd&id=1962

Maybe it’s time to ban JAKIM out of fear that it might be confusing for Muslims 😢

They would be better employed if they went around and got rid of this and similar signs.

Next JAKIM will forbid hot dogs nationwide from now on, if a “pretzel dog” name is enough for halal cert rejection.
