In a surprise twist, red-shirts leader Jamal Md Yunos said the men who attacked a Bersih supporter in Sabak Bernam, and roughed up the media in Kuala Selangor, were actually from Bersih.

“I wish to state that the violence and provocation before this is by Bersih.

“The motorcyclist in yellow who was kicked from the back, (the attacker) was hired by Bersih, to wear the same T-shirt that we wear,” Jamal said, referring to his red T-shirt.

Asked about the aggression against journalists last week, Jamal said that was Bersih as well.

Speaking to the media after a counter-rally against the Bersih convoy in Kapar, Jamal said he would not be surprised if Bersih was suddenly “attacked” by red-shirt impersonators.

Speculation is rife that Bersih supporter Kusaini Kassim, who was attacked by the red shirts in Sabak Bernam on Saturday, was actually a cop planted at the scene to provoke the latter group.

But both Kusaini and the police have denied this allegation.

“How could that be an act? I wanted to go home and had to take that road. It wasn’t an act, it really happened,” Kusaini told Malaysiakini when contacted.

But netizens began accusing him of acting in order to provoke the red shirt supporters and court public sympathy, after a photograph of Kusaini wearing a police uniform (left) was widely spread online.

However, Kusaini denied that he was a police officer, saying that he had donned the uniform for fun at the time the photograph was taken.

“The photograph (of me wearing the police uniform) was taken after a friend asked me to wear his uniform and he asked me not to do anything with the photograph. I just wanted to show off,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Selangor Police Contingent Headquarters clarified in a Facebook post that Kusaini is a junior general assistant in a government agency.

“We will probe any party that spreads the matter as the act was deliberately done to tarnish the police’s image,” said Sabak Bernam OCPD Nor Azmi Isa in the post.

A Bersih supporter who was attacked by red shirts supporters in Sabak Bernam has shared the distressing ordeal which occurred on Saturday.

Kusaini Kassim, who was egged and kicked repeatedly, expressed gratitude to the traffic officer who came to his rescue.

“Thank God a traffic cop came to save me although it took some time to remove me from the group.

“I don’t know what would have happened if he (the officer) had come later than that,” Kusaini told Malaysiakini.

The 49-year-old was part of the Bersih 5 convoy held around the Sabak Bernam area.

However, as he had a family event to attend, Kusaini and a friend went home earlier before the programme ended.

It was on his way back to his home in Bagan Terap that Kusaini encountered the red shirts supporters.

To avoid ploughing through the group, Kusaini decided to stop by the roadside. Kusaini’s friend, however, managed to turn back and did not follow his decision to stop.

However, as soon as he stopped his ER6 Kawasaki motorcycle, Kusaini found himself surrounded by red shirts.

“I suddenly fell after I stopped my motorcycle and they pulled my shoulder and pelted me with eggs,” he said.

Kusaini, who was worried that he would be attacked further, said that he did not retaliate and instead hoped that someone would come to his aid.

His worry was also heightened as he was alone in facing the many red shirts supporters.

Following the incident, Kusaini has since lodged a police report at the Sabak Bernam police station and has also undergone a health check.
