AirAsia gets embattled into political game in Malaysia
A call to boycott products and services from Malaysia’s Chinese companies launched by ultra rightwing Malay citizens in Malaysia has been criticized by AirAsia X CEO, Azran Osman Rani in a twit. One of Malaysia’s most successful export brand has suddenly been dragged into political polemics…
..
Tensions within Malaysia are rising as the country’s population gets more divided than ever. And the government just added fuel to the fire: two weeks ago, Malaysia’s new Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi urged in a statement in a Malay newspaper Utusan Malaysia those who are not happy with the current electoral system to “migrate elsewhere”. The same newspaper –owned by the government party UMNO and reflecting increasingly hardliners within the Malay electorate- called for a boycott of Chinese companies to punish Malaysia’s Chinese community who supported opposition parties.
It could have been only political rhetoric if it did not suddenly rain down over one of Malaysia’s most favourite brands, the low cost carrier AirAsia. In a private tweet, Azran Osman Rani, AirAsia X CEOexpressed his disagreement over the boycott, judging the act as a racist one. It immediately prompted a series of call to boycott as well AirAsia X and the main company AirAsia.
According to various Malaysian news sources, Utusan Malaysia asked on May 19 for a boycott of the airline and was joined shortly after by a civil servants union and two other groups. In an editorial, one of Utusan Malaysia’s editor went as far as asking the carrier to address the way air stewardesses look by lengthening their skirt and covering their chest instead of criticizing the newspaper.
The Malay newspaper cited also the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) urging all civil workers to avoid the budget carrier and to fly instead national carrier Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and its sister company, Firefly, for the upcoming two-week school holidays.
“The power of 1.4 million civil servants can give an impact on AirAsia, so I ask all civil servants to prove this especially in the school holidays,” Cuepacs President Omar Osman was quoted saying, claiming he had received numerous complaints about AirAsia’s service. The Executive Officers Union (KEPAK) and the Malaysian Consumers Protection and Welfare Board (LPKPM) called also for a boycott of the carrier.
It must now be seen if the boycott call had any effect on AirAsia bookings. If there is any, it should however remain limited in numbers and in time. The carrier is serving one of Malaysia’s most extensive networks with many destinations being only served by the budget carrier and its affiliates.
For the time being, AirAsia X CEO Azran Osman Rani does not want to further comment on what he previously said. He told some newspaper that his remarks were blown out of proportion. The reaction of some Malaysians as well…

After Utusan, CUEPACS joins AirAsia boycott call
May 22, 2013
KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 ― Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia reported today a civil servants union and two other groups joining its boycott of AirAsia and sister airline AirAsia X, after the latter firm’s chief executive condemned the newspaper for its racially provocative headline targeting the Chinese following the May 5 polls.
The Malay broadsheet cited the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) in a front-page report urging all civil workers to avoid the budget airlines and to instead fly aboard national carrier Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and its sister company, Firefly, for the upcoming two-week school holidays.
“The power of 1.4 million civil servants can give an impact on AirAsia, so I ask all civil servants to prove this especially in the school holidays,” Cuepacs president Datuk Omar Osman was quoted saying, claiming he had received numerous complaints from several consumer groups dissatisfied with AirAsia’s service.
Several other groups were also cited giving similar reasons backing their call to make AirAsia the airline of last resort, including the Executive Officers Union (KEPAK) and the Malaysian Consumers Potection and Welfare Board (LPKPM), the paper reported.
In an apparent attempt to back up their claims of dissatisfactory service, Utusan also reported on its front page a man complaining that the airline had refused to fly back his mother’s corpse from Jogjakarta to Kuala Lumpur even though she had previously purchased a ticket aboard AirAsia ― despite the carrier not being licensed to do so.

Continuing its tirade against budget airline AirAsia, Utusan Malaysia today focused its sight on businessperson Kalimullah Hassan, who came to the defence of AirAsia X chief executive officer Azran Osman Rani.
Kalimullah, formerly group editor-in-chief of New Straits Times, in defending Azran Osman against Utusan Malaysia’s racist front page headline, tweeted “Only the bigots will find comments like that of Azran Osman offensive. He is a true Malaysian.”
“I wonder sometimes under which rock some of these Utusan personalities crawled out from. Must be a real sank [sic] dark place,” Kalimullah said in his tweet.
Following this, Malay rights group Perkasa described Kalimullah’s tweet as an example of a Malay who has forgotten his roots. Perkasa’s information chief Ruslan Kassim said Kalimullah could not talk about “who are the true Malaysians” as the businessman had obtained various projects from the government.
“We remind Kalimullah not to forget his roots. Or is he one of those who can be described as a Malay who often forgets,” Ruslan said in a statement to the Umno-owned daily.
…..
Gerakan Reformasi Rakyat Malaysia president Ramlan Abu Bakar called on Kalimullah to explain his ties with Azran Osman, as what was reported by Utusan was related to the rights of the Malays according to the federal constitution.
Ramlan said there was no issue for which Utusan Malaysia could be described as racist.
Suara Anak Muda 1Malaysia president Armand Azha Abu Hanifah wants Kalimullah to view the daily’s report on a wider scope and not be prejudiced and label it as racist.

Utusan today also reported a call by the civil service trade union federation Cuepacs for civil servants to boycott AirAsia.

KUALA LUMPUR: Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) deputy president Omar Saleh said the group supports the call made by Umno Veterans Club secretary-general Datuk Mustapha Yaakub to boycott AirAsia and AirAsia X for badmouthing the Malay daily Utusan Malaysia and Malays.
Omar also urged Datuk Seri Kalimullah Masheerul Hassan, as the largest shareholder of AirAsia X, to apologise to all Malays in the country on behalf of the group’s chief executive officer Azran Osman Rani over his public outburst against Utusan.

Zam says sorry to AirAsia for saying it serves pork
August 28, 2013
Latest Update: August 28, 2013 01:37 pm
To avoid a RM5-million lawsuit, Tan Sri Zainuddin Maidin has to post an apology to AirAsia Bhd for six months on his blog, for implying it served pork on its flights.
However, the former information minister and Utusan Malaysia group editor has vowed that he will publish the apology on his blog indefinitely.
Zainuddin said he did not realise that his views in an article titled Hidangan Babi Dalam Penerbangan Air Asia, Orang Islam Patut Tangguhkan Dulu Terbang Dengan Pesawat Ini (Pork served on AirAsia flights, Muslims should hold off flying with the airline) would tarnish the image of Asia’s largest budget carrier.
…
Zainuddin said he only realised this after he received a letter of demand from AirAsia Bhd’s lawyers a month after the blog posting.
“My writing gave the impression that pork was served on their flights. This is not at all true,” he said in a statement on his blog zamkata.blogspot.com .
“I apologise to AirAsia Bhd for any injury to their reputation because of the article, and I hope the public is cleared of any doubt over the issue,” he added.
Zainuddin said he trusts that the airlines are sensitive to religious beliefs of all their passengers.
“AirAsia asked me to carry the apology to them for six months, but I will carry it for years to come, so that it reaches a wider circulation and provides information to future generations,” he said. – August 28, 2013.

Guan Eng: More Malaysians should be like Nazir
By Opalyn Mok
June 12, 2013
GEORGE TOWN, June 12 ― Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng today commended Datuk Seri Nazir Razak for his outspokenness, even as the CIMB Group boss continues to come under attack for defending AirAsia X CEO Azran Osman Rani for the same trait.
Lim urged Malaysians to emulate Nazir in speaking their minds despite the risk of backlash.
“I hope his brother (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak) can be just as brave as him,” he said while condemning a news article in Utusan Malaysia that had labelled Nazir as “anti-Malay” for his praise of Azran.
Azran had criticised Utusan Malaysia for an inflammatory headline, “Apa lagi Cina mau?”, which it ran immediately after the Election 2013. This led to the newspaper to take aim at him and proclaim a boycott against advertising from the airline that he helms.
On Monday, Nazir defended Azran for his forthright attitude, saying that this is the “mark of a leader”, leading to attacks against the banker.
Lim also accused Utusan Malaysia today of turning Malaysians on one another through what he called racially-toned articles.
“Malaysians do not want to be enemies with each other so I hope more Malaysians will be like Nazir,” the DAP secretary-general said in a press conference at his office this afternoon.

A coalition of Malay-Muslim NGOs, led by the Muslim Consumer Association of Malaysia, has branded the prime minister’s brother Nazir Abdul Razak as “anti-Malay”, after he spoke up for AirAsia X CEO Azran Osman Rani.
Nazir (right), the CIMB group chief executive officer, had yesterday praised Azran – who had criticised Utusan Malaysia for its “racist” headline ‘Apa lagi Cina mahu’ (What more do the Chinese want?) – as having the “mark of a leader”.
However, Gabungan NGO Melayu-Islam was not impressed.
“We are very disappointed with Nazir’s statement because, despite leading a famed conglomerate in Asean, he is trapped in a mindset that sidelines the sentiment and sensitivity of his own Malay race,” it said in a statement today.
“We would like to urge Nazir and Azran to willingly swap positions so that they can further strengthen their anti-Malayness.”
Azran’s (left) criticism had led to a tirade for almost a week by Utusan, including reports of Umno veterans calling for a boycott of AirAsia.
The coalition said not all Malays are privileged like Nazir and Azran, and accused the duo of forgetting their roots.
“Nazir, living in a palace, has never felt the bitterness and hardship experience by the Malays who lived a tough live, only having enough just to survive.
“Nazir and Azran should realise (where) their roots (lie) and should not be arrogant because of their wealth, position and property.”
It added that what the success of the duo is the result of the struggles of their Malay forefathers and that they are expected to help out other members of their ethnic group.

AirAsia X CEO finds backing from Najib’s brother for ‘speaking his mind’ on Utusan
June 10, 2013
KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 — Once scorched for speaking his mind, Azran Osman Rani earned high praise today from CIMB Group CEO Datuk Seri Nazir Razak, who commended the AirAsia X chief executive’s forthright manner as the “mark of a leader”.
The captain of the long-haul budget airline, which will be making its market debut next month, had been the public target of Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia’s venom for much of last month, after he criticised the Malay broadsheet for what he saw as racial instigation in the aftermath of the May 5 polls that split the country apart.
Nazir, the lead banker for AirAsia X’s listing on Malaysia’s main bourse, praised Azran for speaking his mind and doing what he believed was the right thing.
“That is the mark of a leader,” Nazir said at AirAsia X’s prospectus launch here this morning.
The remarks appeared to be in reference to Azran’s run-in with Utusan Malaysia, although Nazir made no specific mention of the newspaper.
The younger brother to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak added that it was these qualities in the airline’s management team which had seen it register a 70 per cent annual growth in its revenues since it launched its first flight in November 2007.
Azran had come under the right-wing daily’s hammer last month after criticising Utusan on his Twitter account, @azranosmanrani, for what he reportedly saw as a racial instigation in the aftermath of the May 5 polls.
He was also reported to have criticised Malay group Perkasa for its hardline stance as an irrelevant organisation that had caused Malays to be myopic.
In response, the paper had published daily views from Perkasa leaders, the Muslim Consumers Society of Malaysia and pro-Umno activists who slammed Azran, branding him “arrogant” and a Malay who had forgotten his roots.
AirAsia X chairman Tan Sri Rafizah Aziz and director Datuk Seri Kalimullah Hassan had also come under attack from various groups after the duo had defended Azran’s comments.

AirAsia X chairperson Rafidah Aziz appears to have distanced the low-cost carrier from Utusan Malaysia’s criticism of its chief executive officer Azran Osman Rani.
Referring to Azran’s (left) comment, which has sparked retaliation by the daily, Rafidah said this was a personal view which does not represent the airline’s stance.
“Certainly we need to differentiate the statement of the company from a personal statement made on social media,” the former minister and Umno Wanita chief was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian today.
Early this month Azran had described the daily as ‘racist’ because of its crude front page headline ‘Apa lagi Cina mahu?’ (What more do the Chinese want) on May 7.

RIDHUAN TEE PUTS HIS FOOT INTO THE CONTROVERSY!
Malaysiakini
Columnist Ridhuan Tee Abdullah said budget carrier AirAsia should focus on making the skirts of its Malay air stewardesses longer and cover their chests instead of criticising Umno-owned daily Utusan Malaysia.
In the weekend edition of Utusan Malaysia today, Ridhuan noted AirAsia X CEO Azran Osman Rani’s statement on Twitter: “I am Malaysian. I am anti-racism. I am disgusted by Utusan’s editorial stance”.
“My advice, take care of the low-cost carrier and don’t interfere in outside matters.
“Think of ways to make the skirts longer and covering the chests of Malay stewardess at the budget carrier,” he opined.
He also took offence at AirAsia’s reception given to Virgin group chairperson Richard Branson recently.
“Some of the Malay stewardesses were asked to act like cartoons, dyeing their hair white and dressing sexily just to welcome the Caucasian,” he said.

DAP to challenge Utusan’s AirAsia boycott call in Parliament
KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 — The DAP will take its protest against Utusan Malaysia to Parliament when it sits next month, deputy chairman M. Kulasegaran vowed today as he lashed out at the Umno-owned daily for going on a warpath against budget carrier AirAsia.
Labelling Utusan Malaysia Umno’s “favourite pet poodle”, the Ipoh Barat MP told AirAsia X’s chief executive Azran Osman Rani not to apologise for criticising the paper’s allegedly racist slant, expressing confidence that a majority of Malaysians would continue to support the carrier despite its boycott campaign.
“The paper and Umno can do whatever they want at the end of a long day the ordinary people will support AirAsia, just as the majority of Malaysian voters supported Pakatan Rakyat (PR), though it was Umno-BN that won a disputed election,” he said in a statement here.
…….
The senior parliamentarian lashed out at the paper’s boycott campaign, reminding it of AirAsia’s success as a business built from scratch and as a symbol of national pride.
Without censuring Utusan Malaysia for its actions, he said it appeared as if Umno’s top brass were condoning the paper’s boycott call.
“I urge Azran not to apologise to Utusan,” he said. “I will raise this issue when the 13th Parliament opens its inaugural session which is scheduled to begin June 24.
“I urge Malaysians to stand by Azran and to give Air Asia our fullest support,” he added.

AIRASIA X’S CHIEF EXECUTIVE WAS DEEMED TO HAVE OFFENDED UTUSAN WITH A TWEET, AND THAT HAS LED TO THE SINGLING OUT OF THE AIRLINE FOR A BOYCOTT.
The call to boycott AirAsia was mooted by Utusan’s Awang Selamat — the nom-de-plume for the paper’s collective editorial voice — in its column on May 19 in retaliation for criticism from AirAsia X’s chief executive, Azran Osman Rani, over the latter’s Twitter account for what he reportedly saw as a racial instigation in the aftermath of the May 5 polls.

Utusan Malaysia’s Awang Selamat has told the Umno-owned paper to stop taking the airline’s ads until its sister company’s chief executive apologises for criticising the broadsheet’s racist piece – reported in the Malaysianinsider on 19th May.
So, no apology, no Air Asia ads in Utusan?
