CORONAVIRUS | Local authorities have warned to continue taking sterner action in enforcing the movement control order (MCO) to combat the spread of Covid-19.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said as of yesterday (March 28), the police had arrested 158 people in Penang for violating the MCO.
Chow added, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) had shut down the market section of Sri Aman Complex in Relau yesterday.
“It was shut down for its failure in practising social distancing, restricting the number of customers who could enter the market at any given time and not preparing hand sanitisers for its customers,” Chow said in a statement today.
“MBPP had also instructed all stall operators not within the confines of Jelutong market to cease their operations from March 30 onwards,” he added.
Chow said various approaches have been used by the MBPP including public education prior to the issue of warning notices and shut down orders.
He added, the shutdown orders were finally issued by the authorities because the MCO was being “ignored”.
“Given these circumstances, I hope all traders and the public will not view the MCO lightly.
“The authorities such as the police, the city councils and others will not hesitate to take stern action against those who are still stubborn,” Chow cautioned.
“This is for everyone’s wellbeing. Be patient during this period so that our nation and the state will return to the situation as it was before.”
