MACC probes kickbacks for bank loans

PETALING JAYA: Some bank officials in Sabah are reported to be under investigation for having taken bribes for approving personal loans for their customers.

The personal loan racket is believed to have been going on for some time, according to Shaharom Nizam Abd Manap, the Sabah director of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

Some details of the racket were uncovered after seven bank officers were arrested earlier in the week for allegedly demanding payment of RM7,000 from a civil servant who applied for a RM50,000 personal loan.

MACC nabs eight suspected of falsifying bank loan documents

Shaharom Nizam said that in a follow-up operation, a team of MACC officers raided the bank’s branch in Kota Kinabalu and in Likas, and the house of one of the bank’s personnel in the capital.

“As a result, a number of items were seized, such as a laptop, personal computer, six cellphones, a number of rubber stamps suspected to be fake and the bank’s personal loan forms,” he said in a statement tonight.

According to Shaharom Nizam, the raid on the three premises and the seizures of numerous items brought the number of arrests involving bank officers to five more, aged between 26 and 29, yesterday.
