DAP lawmaker Lim Lip Eng has demanded that the police charge the firecracker thrower at the Bersih 4 rally on Sunday with attempted murder.
“It could have resulted in a stampede which could have resulted in casualties,” Lim said at a press conference today.
“I want the man to be investigated under Section 307 of Penal Code (Attempt to murder). This is to teach others a serious lesson so that nobody will do this again,” he said.
“The police are investigating the case under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957,” he said.
“This is not sufficient… I want the police to find out his real motive and who is behind him. This is a matter of life and death.
“This was not just a firecracker. I recognise the sound of firecrackers as I hear it during Chinese New Year celebrations. It was like the sound of small bomb,” the Segambut parliamentarian said.
While Section 8 of the Explosives Act carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison, a person found guilty under an attempted murder charge faces a maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment.
Lim was at Dataran DBKL, just a street away from the car park of Swiss Hotel, where the explosion took place, injuring a man and his wife.
A few explosions were heard on the night of Aug 30, and a middle-aged man was caught red-handed by a security volunteer, Lee Keat Meng, 36, the moment he allegedly tried to throw the second firecracker.
Lim added the man was identified by netizens as Facebook user Tok Ketua, the president of Pertubuhan Suara Inspirasi Malaysia, Suhaimi Adnan.
The Facebook page of Tok Ketua also showed that he wore Umno official attire and attended the 2014 Umno AGM. He had also taken pictures with Umno president Najib Abdul Razak, Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and information chief Ahmad Maslan.

In his Facebook page, Tok Ketua also posted a selfie to share his experience of being arrested and having to spend a night at the Dang Wangi police lock-up.
Lim accompanied Lee to lodge a police report on Sunday night after the incident and to give a statement on Tuesday night after finding out that the man was involved in anti-Bersih and anti-Anwar movements.
“Investigating officer Syuhaizri also confirmed the man in the Tok Ketua as the suspect himself,” he said.
The DAP leader also claimed that police only knew the suspect was an Umno member after his release.
Lim also wanted the man to be investigated for allegedly pretending to be a police officer when he was taken to the police station.
According to the police report lodged by Lee, the man admitted he was a police officer. This was also later confirmed by KL CID chief Zainuddin Ahmad, who reportedly said the man identified himself as cop.
At the press conference, Lim said the investigating officer repeatedly denied the man was a policeman.
According to Lim, the investigating officer said Bukit Aman might take over the case and investigate the man for provocation and posing a threat to security.

Bersih 4: Man throws firecracker at protestors, injures four
The man suspected of throwing a firecracker at protestors was handed over to the police.
KUALA LUMPUR: A scuffle ensued at the Dataran Merdeka area after an individual apparently threw firecrackers at Bersih 4 protesters here, injuring four.
A protester who witnessed the incident said that the man, dressed in a black T-shirt and yellow headband, threw it at some protesters resting at a car park.
He said the man tried to throw another but was foiled by other protesters.
“He was identified and immediately cornered by protesters,” he said.
He added that the police arrived to calm the situation, and the man was given some medical attention.
“The medical team treated him and he was arrested and brought away,” he said.
The four injured protesters were also given immediate medical attention.
A medical officer, Yap, said the injuries were not so severe.
“There were some bad burns but nothing more,” she said.
