BERSIH SHANGHAI PRESS STATEMENT
22 JUNE 2013
“BLACK 505 PADANG MERBOK @ SHANGHAI”
Bersih Shanghai holds a “BLACK 505 PADANG MERBOK @ SHANGHAI” on 22 June in Shanghai, with a turnout of approximately Malaysians residing in Shanghai.
The gathering is to support the demands of the BLACK 505 PADANG MERBOK holding in KL.
REFER EC TO ROYAL TRIBUNAL
Bersih Shanghai also calls on the government to immediately form a Royal Tribunal and put the Election Commission (EC) on trial based on the Federal Constitution, Article 131A (which is for the removal of judges), due to the tons of irregularities cases revealed before and during the GE 13.
According to the Federal Constitution, Article 114 (2), “In appointing members of the Election Commission the Yang di- Pertuan Agong shall have regard to the importance of securing an Election Commission which enjoys public confidence”. In view of this constitutional provision, Bersih Shanghai strongly believes that the current EC is no longer meeting the fundamental requirement set by the Federal Constitution where the EC must gain the public confidence.
From the perspective of overseas voters, the very poor response in terms of postal votes, with only about 7000 applicants (out of over 1 million Malaysian citizens living and working overseas, or 0.7%), proves that the current EC has lost public confidence as overseas Malaysians clearly have no trust in his capability in facilitating overseas voting. Many overseas voters dare not register as postal voters because they are worried that their votes would be manipulated by the EC at Putrajaya.
We also call on the EC to announce the breakdown of the overseas voters’ voting pattern.
