PKR delegates at the party’s ninth national congress today approved a special motion that provided for the move, which will give the party an additional six months to prepare for internal polls.

PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail had tabled a special motion that contained four proposals, including the extension of the current party leadership’s term until party polls.

“To give power to the central leadership to extend the term of service for division leaders and MPP to a set period until the elections,” Saifuddin said when reading out the motion.

The three-year term for PKR’s central leadership was initially set to expire this November 28.

The motion also sought for a mandate for the PKR central leadership to propose an amendment to the party constitution, which is necessary for the polls delay.

9th PKR Youth Congress: PKR moots new panel to do redelineation

A new commission should be established to study the redelineation of state and parliamentary constituencies, which is due to soon, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali proposed today.

“The gerrymandering masterminded by Umno has crippled the electoral system in Malaysia. The delineation of constituency boundaries was done unfairly and did not meet the principle of representative democracy.

“The Election Commission (EC) should focus more on the management of elections and not be burdened with the responsibility to propose redelineation of constituency boundaries.

“This will only jeopardise the credibility and independence of the EC,” Azmin said in his opening address at the annual congress of the PKR Wanita and Youth wings in Petaling Jaya this afternoon.

The Gombak MP proposed that a new commission that will be independent, transparent and professional be given the task of re-delineating constituency boundaries.

9th PKR Wanita Congress: Wanita PKR wants more women candidates

Wanita PKR pushed today for more female candidates representing the party in Election 2014, reminding the party leadership the importance of the women vote, which a recent survey showed had gone to Barisan Nasional (BN).

Wanita PKR chief Zuraida Kamaruddin, during her speech at the opening of the wing’s 9th national congress here, urged the leadership to give better recognition to wing members, who form the party’s backbone.

In a direct message to PKR deputy president Azmin Ali, who was present to officiate the congress opening, the Ampang MP insisted that the leader listen to the voice of the women’s wing in its request for more candidates.

In her speech to the congress later, Zuraida expressed disappointment that several female leaders from the party had failed to make the cut in PKR’s final candidates list.

She noted that Wanita PKR had fielded candidates in 11 federal seats and 18 state seats and won in three federal seats and eight state seats.

“Despite this, we still failed to achieve the 30 per cent target on the involvement of women candidates in the recent polls,” she said.

9th PKR Youth Congress: PKR calls for end to post-polls conflict, moots bipartisan engagement

As the Najib adminisration widens its security dragnet on opposition supporters, PKR called for an end today to the widespread conflict over the results of Election 2013, urging instead for dialogue between all warring parties.

PKR deputy president Azmin Ali noted the party’s indignation at Barisan Nasional’s (BN) return to power despite losing the popular vote, but said the people’s welfare should be prioritised above partisan politics.

He stopped short, however, of urging an end to the series of “Black 505” rallies nationwide, saying organising or attending peaceful assemblies is the constitutional right of every Malaysian citizen.

But there is a need to move forward with plans to develop the nation, the Gombak MP said, noting that one way is through bipartisan engagement.

“If we declare our intention to serve the people, to show patriotism… then we need to seek common ground to bring political development to Malaysia,” he said in his speech at the opening of the PKR Youth and Wanita wings 9th national congress here.

“It is our responsibility not to allow the 51-47 atmosphere lead us to a stalemate or political impasse… unending disputes and conflict,” he said, referring to the popular vote score between BN and PR at the polls.

“I think all parties need to have the moral courage to create political dialogue and engagement across the political divide,” he said.

9th PKR Youth Congress: PKR Youth focus on rural Malaysia

PKR Youth wing (AMK) will begin its preparation for the 14th general election immediately and will focus on infiltrating Barisan Nasional’s (BN) strongholds in rural Malaysia, its leader Syamsul Iskandar Akin said today

AMK will also pour much of its resources on wooing young rural women’s support after a survey found majority of the demographic have shun Pakatan Rakyat (PR), added the newly-elected Bukit Katil MP.

“Young women, especially those living in the rural and urban outskirts, are yet to receive a clear information on the message of change. This must be improved,” he said in his opening speech at the wing’s 9th national congress here.

“Secondly, Program AMK Masuk Kampung (AMK Into The Countryside programme). A post-GE13 research indicate a voting polarisation between urban and rural areas. As I have stated just now, the issue remains the same: access to information to the rural community”.

Syamsul, a lawyer by training, said AMK will begin what he termed as “guerilla marketing” in the rural constituencies that will focus on disseminating information to voters in these areas.
