KUALA LUMPUR: Police today disclosed that VVIPs (Very Very Important Person) have been identified among those allegedly involved in illegal hunting in the forests in Peninsular Malaysia.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador (pix), without disclosing further, said the police had been informed that the group was actively involved in such activities.

“I am very serious in this matter (tracking down illegal poachers) and if the police can catch them, their weapons will be confiscated.

“If arrested, they will not escape the country’s legal process,” he said at a press conference on operations dubbed ‘‘Operasi Bersepadu Khazanah’’ (OBK) held at Bukit Aman here today.

Abdul Hamid said there was no need for illegal poachers to hunt for endangered wildlife in today’s age.

“What is the reason for hunting and eating mousedeer and deer? To those VVIP with hunting as a hobby I urge them to embrace the mission of saving the flora and fauna,” he said.

The police also called on the villagers to provide information to the police if they were aware of the existence of such illegal activities related to flora and fauna in their areas.

“They (villagers) know the existence of foreigners and locals and know where the poachers are hunting at,” he said.

Abdul Hamid said police would propose stiffer penalties including whipping against illegal hunters and the matter was now under discussion before being tabled in the Parliament.

“We hope that this new provision will be approved and that the mandatory whipping would deter them from continuing the act,” he said.

The police also detected that there were a number of local and international syndicates that infiltrated the country’s flora and fauna.

In this regard, two battalions of the General Operations Force (PGA) of Senoi Praaq involving 1,073 personnel will be deployed to the jungle for a month to combat illegal poaching and to cooperate with the Marine Police Force and the police air unit in the integrated OBK operations around the National Park forest.

“I have given the approval to the Bukit Aman Logistics Department to provide them with more equipment and will supply food to them every two weeks by helicopter,” he said.

Abdul Hamid also gave permission to the PGA, the Marine Police Force and the police air unit personnel to shoot the hunters if they were threatened while carrying out a covert operation.

“I have given them the standard operating procedure (SOP) in the event that the hunters act aggressively, they are allowed to shoot. This is our country’s forests, how could foreigners threaten the country’s enforcement officers?” he said.

Meanwhile, Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) deputy director-general (conservation) Datuk Fakhrull Hatta Musa who was also present at the press conference said there was an incident in 2017 when the department enforcement personnel stumbled upon the illegal hunters that resulted several officers to sustain injuries.
