Nazri: Cabinet would not have arrested Maria Chin under Sosma – Malay Mail Online
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 11 — The federal Cabinet would not have arrested activist Maria Chin Abdullah under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma), Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said today.
The former de facto law minister who had tabled the Act in Parliament added that the decision was made by the Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.
But Nazri also said Maria made a mistake when she asked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to resign, claiming that such a call is unconstitutional and therefore Sosma can be invoked.
“I still maintain — if you ask me — that Sosma should not be used against politicians,” the tourism and culture minister said in an interview with The Sunday Star.
“But the decision to arrest Maria Chin was not mine. It wasn’t the Cabinet’s nor the Government’s. Had it been our decision, I think Maria Chin would certainly not have been arrested under Sosma.”
Nazri had in 2012 pledged that nobody could be arrested under Sosma for their political beliefs, as long as they are not doing it through violent or unconstitutional means.
“When I promised that Sosma would not be used against any politician, I could only assure it if I — or the Cabinet — made that decision.
“But this [decision] was made by the IGP. I was kept out of this, totally unaware,” he said earlier in the interview.

Fowl act: Dead chickens shocker on fourth night of vigil for Maria http://dlvr.it/Mkkqz3
.

The solidarity vigil for Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah was met with a rude shock tonight when at last 10 dead chickens were left near their gathering site.
This was the fourth night Maria’s supporters have gathered near Dataran Merdeka to protest her detention under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).
A vigil participant, who only wanted to be known as Liew, said the chickens were left by the roadside and were emitting a foul rotting smell.

Who is the woman at the heart of Malaysia’s anti-corruption protests?

Maria Chin Abdullah, the chairperson of Bersih 2.0, is a widely respected, veteran activist now languishing in solitary confinement
On Wednesday morning, hundreds of women in yellow T-shirts marched to the parliamentary building in Kuala Lumpur, demanding the release of activist Maria Chin Abdullah, who was arrested last Friday. They carried banners and placards that said: “Women 4 Maria” and “Free Maria.”
The march marks the fifth day since Chin, chairperson of Bersih 2.0, a pro-democracy and anticorruption coalition group, was arrested last Friday, on the eve of a massive Bersih protest in the Malaysian capital.

Cenbet wants IGP to explain ‘security threat’ posed by Maria
KUALA LUMPUR: The Centre for a Better Tomorrow (Cenbet) has called for Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah to be released immediately from detention and her predicament explained.
Cenbet also called on the police to stop using the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) against non-terror suspects.
“The Inspector-General of Police must explain why Sosma was used to detain Maria,” said Cenbet in a statement. “The law was originally intended to counter terrorism.”
Khalid Abu Bakar, the IGP, owed the public an explanation as to how and why Maria was a threat to national security, it added. “The explanation has to be specific, in clear terms, in line with transparency and good governance.”
Failure to give a satisfactory explanation was not only unprofessional, said the think tank, it was also an abuse of power and might be criminal misconduct.
Worse, said Cenbet, it might open the floodgates to similar abuses.

The following is a letter written by the children of Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah, after her arrest.
It is the eve of the Bersih rally. We are sure that everybody is preparing for the rally, for what seems to be the next step to achieving a free and fair election for Malaysia.
It was around 6pm, we were at home preparing dinner when we received a call from a family friend asking if we were okay and if we heard about the news.
Confused about what was going on, we asked her what happened.
She explained to us that our mother has been arrested and was brought to a police station for further processing.
Within the next hour we were at the police station and as we arrived we had to wait for one of our mother’s lawyers to bring us in to see our mother.
While we were in the processing room, our mother explained to us that she was being charged for destabilising the government.
Both Mandeep Singh and our mother were reassuring us that everything is going to be fine in a calm and collective state.
We hope that the charges would be dropped and that she would be released soon.
After everything that has transpired, it is disappointing that people who fight for a fair and clean election have been branded as a threat to the country.
Is this the type of country that we Malaysians want to live in, where corruption runs amok, elections are rigged and innocents are placed behind bars?
When we were younger, we did not understand what our parents were fighting for or why our father was protesting strongly against the Internal Security Act.
He is gone now. We are old enough to understand the importance and sacrifice of the work that people like them do.
People like our parents, who are willing to speak up against corruption do not do it for their own sake, but for the sake of the future generations.
As we are writing this, we as Malaysians, are hours away from an opportunity to voice out to make a change in Malaysia.
It is why it is so important for us, as Malaysians, to show that we will not tolerate the injustice that government officials have got away with.
We implore to our fellow Malaysians that are attending the rally, or are watching it at home, to listen to the speakers and to understand what Bersih is trying to achieve.
We hope that the rally will be peaceful and to see you there.
Sincerely,
Azumin, Aziman, Azemi.

Maria Chin detained under Sosma
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 — Bersih 2.0 co-chairman Maria Chin Abdullah has been detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 amid the Bersih 5 rally.
A lawyer with the polls reform group, Fadiah Nadwa Fikri, confirmed that Maria was detained under the security law this afternoon.
Police could hold her up to 28 days and two days without legal representation.
“Under Sosma detention, Maria can be detained for a further 28 days. We are shocked and appalled by this abuse of power,” Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) tweeted.
The human rights group also tweeted that the magistrate court granted a two-day remand for nine other suspects arrested for rioting.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Amar Singh Ishar Singh confirmed the arrests of 14 people last night, mostly pro-Bersih activists and opposition politicians.
He said the arrests were made to prevent riots, breach of the peace and public order.
Maria, however, was nabbed under Section 124C of the Penal Code that prohibits the attempt to commit activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy.
