Umno rebels unfazed by action, to step up quit call

Nine of the 13 Telok Kemang Umno branch leaders who had called for the resignation of party president Najib Razak will face the party’s disciplinary tribunal next week.

However, the group leader who had organised the press conference calling for Najib to step down said they are unfazed and will step up efforts to push their agenda.

“We will make arrangements again for a few activities that are larger than this.

“We come today to organise a more comprehensive effort, so that we can bring the movement to every state,” said Taman TKK branch chief Kamarul Azman Habibur Rahman

He was speaking at an event tiled ‘The Struggle To Democratise Umno’ in Puchong last night.

Kamarul is among those who have received letters calling them before a disciplinary tribunal to be held next Wednesday at 2.30pm in Kuala Lumpur.

200 branch leaders challenge Najib to face party polls

Some 200 rebel Umno branch leaders have challenged their president Najib Razak to face a party election at the general assembly next year, in order to “cleanse the party” and restore the rakyat’s confidence.

Their spokesman Kampung Railway Umno branch member Mohamad Said Midon said this is because grassroots members have allegedly lost confidence in Najib as party president and the cleansing process is necessary to ensure Umno’s relevance.

“If he (Najib) is smart, he should hold Umno’s party election in 2016. That is the most important thing before we face the general elections,” he said last night.

“Now our call is for Najib to resign and to hold the party elections in 2016 in order to ‘cleanse’ Umno just like PAS had done.

“This is how we can restore Umno’s confidence and the people’s confidence (in Umno),” said Mohamad Said at a press conference after a closed-door ‘Democratising Umno’ event that was attended by branch leaders from all across the country.

A group of Umno branch leaders have launched a movement to force Datuk Seri Najib Razak to resign as party president, less than a fortnight ahead of the party’s annual general assembly.

Dubbing the movement “Gabungan Ketua Cawangan Malaysia” or “Coalition of Branch Chiefs Malaysia” (GKCM), the Umno leaders are demanding Najib’s resignation to resolve the party’s problems.

“We would like to repeat, the party president has done many things that have burdened the people, and we want him to step down.

“Otherwise, we, the whole country, will force him to step down,” Railway branch chief Said Amidon told a press conference after a programme in Puchong, Selangor, last night.

Amidon, one of the group’s spokesmen, said Umno branches across the country were working together to pressure the president to quit his party post.

“We would like to inform you the leaders of all branches across the country are joining the movement, it is getting bigger,” said the Puchong Umno division grassroots leader.

GKCM said hundreds of Umno branches have thrown their weight behind the cause, but declined to identify them for safety reasons.

Umno Taman TKK branch chief Kamarul Azman Habibur Rahman, another spokesman, said the movement aimed restore the dignity of the country’s biggest Malay ruling party.

When launching the movement, Kamarul also read out a declaration from GKCM.

“First, the Umno president must step down. Second, there should be no sacking of Umno members who criticise or condemn leaders to improve them. Third, the Umno elections must go on,” said Kamarul.

Former Gopeng Umno Wanita chief Hamidah Osman has lamented that she was made a sacrificial lamb when party president Najib Abdul Razak announced her sacking.

She pointed out that Umno veteran Dr Mahathir Mohamad was even more critical of Najib but was spared of any action.

“I am convinced that I was made the black sheep because they couldn’t get the person they wanted, so they settled for something less and I became the victim.

“If going by who was more critical, there are others who were more vocal, such as Tun (Mahathir) but why was no action taken (against him)?” she told Malaysiakini after a press conference at Impian Hotel in Ipoh.
