Kit Siang: Is MCA under Wee prepared to come clean on 1MDB-linked funds?

Published:  |  Modified:

DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang has questioned whether the current MCA leadership under its deputy Wee Ka Siong is prepared to come clean on the 1MDB-linked funds the party allegedly received from then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Lim noted that former MCA president Chua Soi Lek had in 2015 admitted that Najib provided an “unprecedented pledge to fund BN component parties”.

“Is Wee prepared to make a clean breast and tell Malaysians the whole story of MCA’s involvement in the 1MDB scandal as MCA is not an innocent party in the 1MDB scandal?” he said in a statement today.

Outgoing MCA president Liow Tiong Lai has indicated that he will not be defending his position following MCA’s disastrous performance in the 14th general election and Wee is the frontrunner to take up the position.

Amid several Umno leaders being charged for corruption, Lim noted that there were questions over why the same had not befallen on other BN component parties.

For example, Lim noted that former Umno supreme council member Puad Zarkashi had raised the question but explained that the BN component parties were already “dead” and therefore did not need to be “killed further”.

“Will Wee…answer Puad or will the answer come from former MCA president Chua Soi Lek at the launching of his autobiography ‘Like Me or Hate Me: Rising from the Political Ashes’ in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow?” said LIm.

DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang said 1MDB had become an issue in 2013 and that should have raised suspicion among MCA leaders when then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak offered to fund the party.

Lim said this in response to former MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek who said someone receiving money from their father wouldn’t question if it was stolen.

“He should have known. 1MDB was already an issue in 2013.

“Even though he said one would not question where their father’s money came from, but if there was suspicion, then they should have asked,” he told journalists after an event in Nilai today.

Lim urged all BN component parties which have received money purportedly originating from 1MDB to return the funds.

Former BN chairperson Najib Razak distributed a total of RM470 million to BN parties in the 2013 general election. Of that sum, RM16.5 million went to MCA.

Former MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek had in October 2015 admitted that MCA was among the BN parties which received election funds from Najib.

In an interview with Malaysiakini on Thursday, Chua said MCA had no way of knowing the source of the funding.

“I already said there was money (given to MCA). But during that time (2013), there was no 1MDB. (News of) 1MDB had not burst onto the scene yet. (Talk of) 1MDB only emerged in 2014,” he said.

“When people give you money … when your father gives you money, will you ask your dad where the money comes from? Did you steal it? Did you borrow it?” he said.

“You would just receive it in good faith, don’t you agree?” he said.

“(Even) if the money came from 1MDB, we are just an innocent party. How the heck were we to know the origin of this money?” he said.
.

When asked if MCA should return the money now that the party knows that it originated from 1MDB, Chua said his answer would be irrelevant as he has no control over MCA’s funds.

“That, you have to ask the (current) leadership,” he said.

Stop the distractions, answer the billion-ringgit question

Lim Kit Siang  |  Published:
.

In fact, in November 2015, former MCA president Chua Soi Lek made a startling revelation about Najib’s RM2.6 billion “donation” to the latter’s personal banking accounts before the 13th general election. Chua recollected how Najib had, in a BN Supreme Council meeting before the 13th general election made an “unprecedented pledge to fund BN component parties”.

Chua had said: “I remember clearly. I was the first to thank him. I said I have joined politics for more than 20 years and have gone through five general elections. (We) have never received a single sen from BN before.

“So everyone agreed and many thanked him. When the election came, he delivered – he was able to disburse some funds (to the component parties).”

It would appear that the chickens have now come home to roost. The onus is on Najib to prove that the hundreds of millions of ringgit channelled from his bank accounts to BN parties in the past were not from 1MDB.

Former MCA president Chua Soi Lek has shed some light on where some of the RM2.6 billion in Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s personal bank accounts may have gone to.

Chua, when asked about the RM2.6 billion in a Mandarin interview with Cari.com.my, recollected how Najib had in a BN supreme council meeting before the 13th general election made an unprecedented pledge to fund BN component parties.

“I must admit, during the BN supreme council meeting approaching the May 5 general election, he (Najib) in his capacity as prime minister and BN chairperson did reveal that in that election, BN will support its component parties’ finances.

“I remembered clearly, I was the first to thank him.

“I said that I have joined politics for more than 20 years and gone through five general elections, (we) have never received a single sen from BN before.

“So everyone agreed and many thanked him. When the election came, he delivered – he was able to disburse some funds (to the component parties),” he was quoted as saying.

When asked by the interviewer if Chua was convinced that the money was purely for the general election, the former MCA president said he did not know.

“Of course, if there are some parts that was not used for the general election, no one knows.

“That is why we need to wait for the investigations to be completed,” he said.

In the interview, Chua said he had still met Najib even though the former had retired from politics and told the prime minister that while his support in the top echelon appear in tact, much work still had to be done at the grassroots level.

‘No one wants to ride on Najib’s image now’

“I told him you still have a lot of work to do, you need to convince people that the money that entered your account, in law, it is not wrong.

“So long as the money did not come from the government or 1MDB, there is nothing wrong.

“Because in Malaysia, there is no law to say that when people donate money to you for the election, you need to report it,” he said.

How much did MCA get from RM2.6b, asks MP

A DAP parliamentarian wants to know the amount received by MCA from the RM2.6 billion transferred into Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s personal bank accounts.

“Was the amount transferred into the personal accounts of MCA leaders, too, or was it transferred into MCA’s official bank account?

“If it did go into personal accounts, who had received the funds?” asked Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng in a statement today.

Chua had recollected how Najib had, in a BN supreme council meeting before the 13th general election, made an unprecedented pledge to fund BN component parties.

Lim, therefore, asked whether the silence of other MCA leaders was proof that the funds received were indeed from the prime minister.

As such, MCA leaders are given 24 hours to come clean on the matter.

“If not, I will lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for the bank account of the party or the personal accounts of its leaders to be investigated.

“I really want to know where the funds which were donated to MCA have gone to,” he said.

WHY COULDN’T CHUA SOI LEK KEEP QUIET? Now, everyone is talking about his sex tape again! The star of ‘The Wolf of Muar Street’ has brought it all on himself…

Soi Lek, Najib, then AG and the sex tape |

YOURSAY ‘What a delightful combination – the movie star, the PM, and the AG.’

Chua sings Najib’s praises: ‘He helped with sex video statement’

Vijay47: It appears that many among the multitudes believe that since former MCA chief Chua Soi Lek readily admitted being the star of ‘The Wolf of Muar Street’, he qualifies being elevated to the ranks of saints and angels.

Leaving aside PM Najib Razak’s Boy Scout attributes in the whole affair, this exaltation appears to be quite in order with sundry lawyers and the attorney-general (AG) himself holding that despite Chua’s admission of participation, he could “even win” should he choose to sue anyone accusing him of being in the sex tape.

Perhaps the person who was AG in 2008 could explain and enlighten us.

What a delightful combination – the movie star, the PM, and the AG. The team would have been truly complete if only they had a judge or two.

CQ Muar: By Chua’s admission that Najib (at the time the deputy PM) had lent him a hand when the sex scandal erupted; and even went to the extent of assisting him (Chua) in drafting the speech admitting he was the person in the video goes to show that our prime minister will sympathise with wrongdoers and get them out of hot waters.

This is clear evidence Najib is a man deft at escaping from a tight situation and free himself from the dragnet. Such inherent talent of our prime minister clearly shows how shrewd and skilful he can be, which is manifested in his present 1MDB controversies.

An unprecedented fiasco such as the hefty billions found in his bank account can drag on for a long time, and this is due to his talent and mastery in stopping the exposure of his wrongdoings.

Anonymous 122461436161429: There are so many things wrong with Chua’s statement.

Firstly, he says his lawyers told him to lie about the sex video and sue his accusers. His lawyers should be disbarred. And isn’t this what Najib is doing with the 1MDB scandal – lying and suing the accusers?

Secondly, Chua supports Najib as a friend, not Najib as the PM. Chua should state his stand on Najib in his capacity as PM.

Should the PM of Malaysia be the finance minister, should he admit and explain the alleged theft of billions, should he admit and explain the billions in his personal account, should he interfere in investigations into the scandal, should he condone insults of the Chinese minority by his fellow leaders, and should he step down?

XED: Chua’s lawyers have no sense of honour, telling him that “he could get away with denying it.” They are a disgrace to the country…

Odin Tajué: Interesting revelations, Chua Soi Lek. Now you have given a twist to the saying that a lawyer with a briefcase can steal more money than a robber with a gun.

Of course, ‘lawyer’ here applies to the AG as well, for the person holding the position is also trained in law.

Victor Johan: “Chua added that he had also consulted the attorney-general at that time, who had given a similar view.”

So is Chua claiming that the then AG supported him in not telling the truth?

NOW WE HAVE AN IDEA WHY CHUA SOI LEK HAS SOMETHING GOOD TO SAY ABOUT NAJIB RAZAK!

Chua praised Najib as someone who was always ready to lend his ear.

If it is true, why hasn’t Najib lent his ear to the myriad voices asking, “Where is the RM2.6bn?”

Former MCA president Chua Soi Lek, known for his phenomenal political comeback despite resigning over a sex scandal, said then Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had lent him a hand when the controversy erupted.

Spefically, said Chua, Najib helped in the drafting of the speech that the embattled party chief read out on television admitting he was the person in a sex video that had been anonymously circulated.

“At that time, when I drafted the speech to admit on television, I wrote it with Najib. I went to his house.

“He thought I wrote it in a way that was too rigid, (so) he edited it for me,” Chua said in a Mandarin interview with Cari.com.my.

Chua praised Najib as someone who was always ready to lend his ear.

“Najib is actually a good listener; he listens to you,” said Chua.
