Saudi envoy wants more M’sian-made cars to enter kingdom

Although trade relations between Saudi Arabia and Malaysia have improved, there was still room for expansion such as in the automotive sector, its Ambassador to Malaysia Fahad Abdullah Al-Rashid said.

He said that it would be good if Malaysian-made cars could further penetrate the Saudi market, apart from food ingredients like palm oil and halal products.

“There are Proton cars in Saudi Arabia but the number is limited and we hope it will increase in the future because the product is good,” the envoy told Bernama in a recent interview held at the Saudi embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

Reports said that Riyadh-based Al-Rashed & Al-Thunayan Auto Co is Proton’s exclusive distributor in Saudi Arabia, appointed by Proton since 2006. In 2008, the Proton Persona hit the Saudi Arabian market after two of its previous models, the Proton Waja and Proton Gen 2, had been selling well.

Proton to hike car prices by up to RM2,000

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 1 — Proton announced today that its car prices will be increased by between RM312 and RM2,021 effective February 15 due to the weaker ringgit.

The national car manufacturer said its operation costs and the entire car-making chain were affected by the depreciation of the ringgit as many raw materials are purchased in foreign currency.

“To cushion the impact which has been affecting the company’s bottom line since August 2015, Proton has put more efforts in reducing operational costs and rationalising operations where necessary.

Proton also announced a Chinese New Year promotion, including a 2.8 per cent interest rate for all Proton cars and a special graduate scheme with monthly instalments from RM258 a month

No price increase yet for Perodua Axia, Myvi and Alza

The new year has brought about new and higher prices for Honda, Toyota, Lexus, Kia, Peugeot, Citroen and Audi vehicles, with Proton possibly raising prices after Chinese New Year. But Perodua has no plans to follow suit, yet.

Perodua president and CEO Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said at yesterday’s 2015 performance review that the company will hold on to current prices for as long as it can take it. However, he did not rule out the possibility of raising prices should the foreign exchange situation worsen.

“We will continue to monitor until the impact is so great.. then we may need to review that (price hikes). As of now, not yet,” he said in response to questions from the media.

In light of the weak ringgit, rising cost of living, tightened lending guidelines and other factors, the Malaysian Automotive Association forecasts the Total Industry Volume (TIV) to suffer a year-on-year drop of 2.5 percent this year.

In announcing the “Market Review for 2015 and outlook for 2016”, association president Aishah Ahmad said the forecast for TIV in 2016 will be 650,000 unit sales.

This is in contrast to the 666,674 units sold in 2015, or a predicted drop in the sales of 16,674 units this year.

Proton aims to sell 150,000 cars, to launch 4 new models

National carmaker Proton Holdings Bhd is eyeing sales of 150,000 units for 2016, banking on the existing and four new models to be launched.

Proton chief executive officer Abdul Harith Abdullah said the new models will be introduced quarterly in 2016.

“Having attained sales of just slightly above 100,000 vehicles in 2015, this year, will truly be an exciting one for Proton and that is my commitment to our stakeholders,” he told reporters after witnessing the appointment of 29 new Proton dealers today.

They are currently Suzuki dealers nationwide.

Proton chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the new models would have the names of existing Proton models to save time in promoting them to the public.

“In the past, Proton put out new models with new names. We spent a lot of time promoting the brand new names without any history to fall back on.

“Like other companies as Toyota and Honda, we have decided to build new cars, but retain the old names,” he added.

It’s a catch-22. Raise prices and lose sales. Maintain prices and earn less money or even lose money.

The drastic and prolonged fall in the Ringgit has meant rising costs of raw materials that are imported. Thus, the cost of a Proton car is up.

Proton considering price increase next year

Embedded image permalink

Proton Holdings Bhd is considering to increase the prices of its cars starting from January 2016 due to the weakening ringgit.

In a statement today, the national carmaker said the price increases were seen as an industry situation as they would need to be raised to compensate for the effect of the lower ringgit.

Chief executive officer Abdul Harith Abdullah said many of the company’s raw materials were purchased in foreign currency.

“The weaker ringgit affects the company’s operation costs and the entire eco-system chain from the vendors to us,” he said.

Abdul Harith said Proton was evaluating its price structure and the percentage of the price increase will depend on the models.

Dr M: Proton tries to counter Malaysians’ negative perception of its cars but still fails

1. Dr Mahathir complains that Malaysians can’t seem to forget the poor quality of the earliest Proton cars, and that is why they are biased against Proton cars.

WHOSE FAULT IS IT, IF NOT HIS? He made us buy inferior Proton cars for more money than we would have spent on imported quality cars.

2.He also said that Proton cars today fared much better as they were powered by efficient engines.

3. “Today the automatic windows in Proton cars jump up and down efficiently,” he said, adding that Proton endeavoured to produce world class cars.

Malaysians sold substandard cars, Proton admits

Proton’s admission to producing substandard cars for the local market comes on the back of a decision to begin to introduce all its new models to international standards. Good decision, but is this not a tad late?

It is something of an open secret that our national carmaker Proton produces two separate versions of its range of vehicles; one to match up to more stringent standards in export markets and another to flog off in its home market where regulations are understood to be more lax.

Tiger read with glee yesterday Proton’s admission that it had only just begun to consider introducing new local models that meet global standards.

So it is true then. Malaysians have been sold substandard cars by Proton, at least when it comes to internationally recognised standards. Tiger is sure they meet all local standards, should this be of any importance.

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 7,500 “elegant brown” Proton Exora taxis will be hitting Malaysian streets by 2015, replacing all other models as the nation’s new taxis.

“We are keeping the same number (of taxis) or may even shrink the number. But out of the total, it will be 7,500 Proton Exoras,” Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chief executive officer Mohd Nur Ismal Kamal said.

He said that 200 Exora taxis were expected to be on roads here by the end of the month.

“By the first quarter of next year, a total of 1,000 of them will be in Penang, Johor Baru and here,” he said after launching the first 50 Exoras under the Teksi 1Malaysia scheme at Bandar Tasik Selatan Integrated Transport Terminal yesterday.

The new taxi will have debit and credit card facilities and will gradually replace future budget, premier and executive-class taxis.

Fares for the new Exora will start at RM3, except for Penang island, which will start at RM4.

No reduction of Proton Preve’s price despite Honda Jazz competition

Proton Edar Sdn Bhd will not reduce the price of the Proton Preve just to compete with the Honda Jazz model, says Chief Executive Officer Hisham Othman.

He said Proton Edar was confident the model’s retail price offered customers value-for-money.

“Proton Preve offers good value, given the fact that it is fitted with a 1.6 capacity turbo engine. If a car uses a turbo engine, that is equivalent to a car with a 2,000 cc engine,” he told Bernama in a telephone interview Thursday.

Hisham said Proton Preve had an edge over other branded and expensive car models.

“If you notice, the Proton Preve has its own attributes like the electronic stability control which is not available in other models.

“This sort of component is only available in luxurious cars like the BMW and Mercedes but what’s surprising here is that the Preve, a national car, comes equipped with this safety feature placing it at par with other international makes,” he added.

Hisham also said there were several luxurious models in the market that did not have this safety feature but people still preferred them over others because they were brand conscious.

‘Perodua and Proton cheaper than Honda in Thailand’

PARLIAMENT The prices of local cars made by Proton and Perodua are cheaper than cars of similar capacity cars in Thailand and Indonesia.

Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Hamim Samuri told the Dewan Rakyat this today when replying to Chua Tee Yong (BN-Labis) during Question Time.

“The prices of a Myvi and a Saga are cheaper than a Honda Brio in Thailand or Indonesia,” Hamim said.

He said the 1.3-litre modes of both the Myvi and Saga were way cheaper than similar capacity models in the neighbouring countries.

Malaysia, Hamim said, has the cheapest 1.3 litre model cars in the Southeast Asian region.

He also said that the excise duty for imported cars would not guarantee a reduction of car prices.

Even if the excise duty was abolished, car manufacturers could still decide whether to reduce or maintain the current car prices.

Proton Saga SV to arrest sales drop: Kenanga

PETALING JAYA (June 18, 2013): Proton Holdings Bhd’s move to introduce the Proton Saga Super Value (SV), which is 13% cheaper than the Saga FLX Standard 1.3 – the previous entry-level Saga, is expected to arrest the month-on-month decline in the sales of Proton cars, said Kenanga Research.

Deeming the move as “positive”, the research firm said however, the lower car price will put further pressure on the national car maker’s already thin and declining profit margins.

Earnings before interest and taxes (ebit) margins in DRB-Hicom Bhd’s automotive segment were just 1.9% in the financial year ended March 31, 2013 (FY13) compared with 3.5% in FY12.

Kenanga estimates that an average 10% reduction in Proton Saga’s price will only reduce DRB-Hicom ebit by less than 2%.

“Looking ahead, this move by Proton could lead the entire industry into the next phase of price competitions, rebates and promotions.”

Goodbye to the national car, Proton

By Jahabar Sadiq, Editor
June 18, 2013

The last vestiges of the national car project will disappear as soon as Putrajaya replaces its fleet of ageing Proton Perdana V6 limousines with Honda Accords, while the Pahang government has opted for the Volkwagen Passats.

Both models are now assembled by Proton Bhd’s main shareholder DRB-Hicom Bhd in Pekan whose Member of Parliament is Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. The company that produces Proton is owned by Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al Bukhary.

The new cars are for Cabinet ministers, deputy ministers and state executive councillors. The total cost of the purchase has yet to be determined.

Other state governments have also slowly replaced the two-litre engine capacity Perdanas, which went out of production in 2010 and is now proving to be expensive to maintain.

A source told The Malaysian Insider that Putrajaya is taking the Honda Accord 2.4-litre model while the Pahang government had opted for the 2-litre Volkswagen Passats. It is learnt that one Volkswagen Toureg has also been bought for the Pahang government.

Other replacements for the Perdanas include Mercedes-Benz E200 Kompressors for the Terengganu government in 2008, replacing their 2004 Perdana V6 Executives.

Both Selangor and Perak had also replaced their Perdanas with Toyota Camrys, while the Sabah government opted for the Volvo S80s.

Proton studying uniform price for its cars

KUALA LUMPUR (June 16, 2013): Proton Holdings Bhd, which aims to reduce its car prices gradually, is also studying to streamline its car prices nationwide.

“In the near future, Proton will evaluate the ways to streamline and absorb the necessary costs so that all Malaysians can enjoy one price,” executive chairman Tan Sri Mohd Khamil Jamil told reporters after launching Saga SV, the Saga FLX variant, here yesterday.

“The uniform price for Proton cars in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak is still under study,” he added.

On the reduction in car prices, he said it would be a gradual exercise as the company needed to take into account all the necessary aspects of the price reduction as Proton had taken a holistic approach.

He said the reduction would be done in phases so as to provide the people with the best affordable car that is also value-for-money.

He pointed out that the creation of the Saga SV was to accommodate this lower pricing, which is priced from RM33,438 and about 12% cheaper than the Saga FLX.

“We have done the value engineering exercise to ensure that despite the price reduction, we have enhanced the quality, safety and features of our vehicles,” explained Khamil.

Proton expects new Saga variant to boost revenue

National car company, Proton Holdings Bhd is confident the new Saga FLX variant, Proton Saga Super Value (Saga SV), will increase the company’s revenue and bottomline.

Executive Chairman Tan Sri Mohd Khamil Jamil expected the company to sell 2,000 units of Saga SV per month due to its quality enhancement and price reduction.

“For a start, we estimate 2,000 units monthly but we hope that with the package we are offering, very encouraging package, it may increase to more than 2,000 units per month.

“We are very hopeful with this reduction in price and quality enhancement of the car, it will create much more interest in the FLX variant and increase the value of Proton’s brand,” he told reporters after launching the Saga SV in the capital, Saturday.

He said the introduction of Saga SV would help Proton to garner 30 per cent market share for Saga in the B-segment by year-end, from the current 24 per cent.

THE promise of lower car prices has been made and the question is when?

Judging by a move Proton Holdings Bhd is going to make, it may start at the lower end of the price range for cars first.

Igniting the cut in car prices will be the Proton Saga.

Sources close to national carmaker Proton say the company is looking at slashing the price of entry level Proton Saga by RM5,000 from its list price. The price of the basic manual transmission Proton Saga is listed at RM38,361.

This was confirmed by Proton deputy CEO Datuk Lukman Ibrahim on the sidelines of the Proton Preve launch in Jakarta on Thursday.

In May, International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed pledged that the Government would stay on course to reduce car prices gradually by 20%-30% over the next five years.

Will the reduction in car prices start with completely knocked down (CKD) or completely built up (CBU) units?

As we know, popular Japanese marques are already enjoying substantial tariff cuts via localisation of parts and free trade agreements.

More clarity will be made when the revised National Automotive Policy (NAP) is announced in the third quarter, with details of the proposed revision to be unveiled pending a review by the Cabinet.

Frost & Sullivan partner and head of automotive and transportation practice for Asia-Pacific, Kavan Mukhtyar says second-hand car dealers earn the difference between their vehicle purchase and selling prices.

“If prices were reduced suddenly, they may get stuck with vehicles purchased at much higher prices, putting their business at a serious risk. A gradual reduction in new vehicle prices would soft-land the second-hand car market. In any case, there will be some short-term adverse impact on the second-hand car market,” he says.

Car prices cannot be reduced abruptly: former Proton CEO

KUALA LUMPUR– The prices of cars cannot be reduced abruptly as they will affect the overall car industry, said former chief executive officer of Proton Holdings Bhd, Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohd Tahir.

Syed Zainal said several important factors had to be considered before the prices could be reduced.

“In my view, the reductions can be done but they must be studied thoroughly and various aspects have to be taken into consideration.

“Many stakeholders are involved because this not a small industry but a big one involving many investors,” he said when met here today.

He said this when commenting on the government’s efforts to reduce the car prices gradually and Pakatan Rakyat’s manifesto calling for a quick cut.

Syed Zainal said the prices could be reduced in stages but must considered several important factors like the effects on the used car market and car parts makers.

He said not only the carmakers would be affected but also the parts makers if the car prices were reduced abruptly.

SV means Super Value (which means Cheaper). The SV is part of the FLX series. It should be called the Saga FLX SV.
“Over the weekend, DRB-Hicom’s wholly-owned unit Proton, unveiled its most affordable car, the Saga SV, which is part of the Saga FLX model range.

The move by Proton to offer cheaper cars is in line with the government’s vision to reduce car prices by between 20% and 30% gradually over the next five years.

Powered by the same 1.3 litre Campro IAFM as Saga FLX and available in manual and CVT automatic transmissions, the Saga SV is priced from RM33,438 to RM36,888 in Peninsular Malaysia. The current Proton Saga cars are priced between RM38,800 and RM49,900.

“The entry level Saga SV is almost 13% or RM5,000 cheaper than the FLX Standard 1.3, the previous entry-level Saga. On the average, the new price is 10% lower compared with the current similar Saga FLX models,” said Kenanga.
