PANDAN: One more nail in MCA’s coffin?

NAJIB HAS DECIDED THAT WANGSA MAJU GOES TO HIS CRONY, DATUK SHAFIE ABDULLAH, WHILE CHUA SOI LEK WAGS HIS TAIL IN OBEDIENCE.

There have been rumours that Najib is considering Wangsa Maju BN chairman Datuk Mohd Shafei Abdullah from Umno for the coveted seat as Shafei claims the Malay electorate in the area are in favour of a Malay candidate.

In the meantime, MCA members and supporters in Wangsa Maju are seething, furious with the timid Chau Soi Lek.

KEE KWONG’S BOMBSHELL: Angry MCA members came to see me but I didn’t promise anything!

MCA-Umno fight over seat

Wangsa Maju, a thriving suburb of some 60,000 voters, has been the object of a bitter fight between Umno and MCA for more than a year now.

However, the situation worsened after Najib confirmed that the Wangsa seat would be contested by his political secretary Shafie Abdullah rather than Yew Teong Look, the MCA Wangsa Maju division chief.

Yew, who complained he had devoted the past few years working the area and spent more than RM2.5million since the 2008 general election, has threatened to withdraw his support from the BN.

He minced no words expressing his disappointment in MCA president Chua Soi Lek for surrendering the seat to Umno. Yew had lost Wangsa by a mere 150 votes to former PKR leader Wee Choo Keong in the 2008 election.

Speculation has been rife that Yew might quit the MCA out of frustration. Although nominations must formalized and officially submitted to the Election Commission on Saturday, there is still no sign that Yew and Shafie have buried the hatchet.

Nonetheless, political observers have said that even should the MCA and Umno reconcile and settle their tussle over the Wangsa seat, the signs of support for Kee Kwong are too evident to ignore.
……….

Dr Tan Kee Kwong, the PKR candidate for the Wangsa Maju parliamentary seat, dropped a bombshell during a political rally for his constituents ahead of the May 5 general election.

The senior opposition leader, who was once a deputy minister in Prime Minister Najib Razak’s BN coalition, revealed that disgruntled MCA members had approached him but he “did not promise anything”.

Kee Kwong also acknowledged that the intensifying feud between BN members – Umno and MCA – over who should contest the Wangsa seat was to his advantage.

“Recently there was one headline in the Sun newspaper – who owns Wangsa Maju? Is the MCA or Umno? But the answer is obvious, it is the rakyat (the people) who own Wangsa Maju, not you (MCA and Umno). So no need to fight. People say if they fight, it is better for me but I didn’t arrange the fight.  It was not of my making,” Kee Kwong said at the packed ceramah in Section 1 on Thursday night.

MCA threat over Wangsa Maju

MCA Wangsa Maju division members gather to urge BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak to name Yew as BN’s Wangsa Maju candidate for GE13. SUNPIX by CAROL LEONG

KUALA LUMPUR (April 10, 2013): The MCA Wangsa Maju division is threatening to stop campaigning unless Barisan Nasional fields its chief, Datuk Yew Teong Look, for the seat.

Division secretary Ng How Doo said Yew, who narrowly lost the seat in the 2008 elections to DAP’s Wee Choo Keong by 150 votes, is a winnable candidate and the only one the division will accept.

“We want to voice our disagreement over speculation that the Wangsa Maju seat may be given to another component party.

“We called an emergency meeting with the division’s Wanita and Youth wings on April 8 and we agreed on two resolutions: Urge BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak to make Yew the candidate. If it is not done, MCA Wangsa Maju will withdraw from all campaigning,” he told a press conference yesterday.

Umno vs MCA – Wangsa Maju not ‘stolen’ but ‘returned’

Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor has announced that MCA had “returned” its Wangsa Maju parliamentary seat to Umno for the upcoming election.

He stressed that Umno did not “steal” any seat from its partners because BN adopts a consensus approach to solve seat negotiations.

“MCA has actually returned the seat to us (Umno). Before this when I was the Umno state liaison chair, the seat was specifically for Indians,” he said.

“I don’t know how the seat was given to MCA to contest. I know when I was liaison chairman, there were 100,000 Indians (in the constituency),” he added.

“So I suggested this seat be given to Indians. But we loaned it to MCA. Now, MCA has returned it after studying the situation. They (MCA) are rational,” Tengku Adnan told reporters after handing out Karisma aids sponsored by Kuala Lumpur Welfare Department in Putrajaya today.

He was responding to the anger of MCA grassroots members regarding several seats that now “loaned” to Umno and other component parties for the coming election.

Seats that have been disputed include Gelang Patah, Tebrau, Wangsa Maju, and Kuantan.

MCA slams bid by PM’s aide to take Wangsa Maju

Umno does not practise the ‘BN spirit’ and proof of this is the move by the caretaker prime minister’s political secretary, Shafie Abdullah, to “steal” the Wangsa Maju parliamentary seat from the MCA, the party’s Wangsa Maju division said today.

“There is no BN spirit now. Shafie has taken on as the BN chief (for Wangsa Maju). The next step is that they (Umno) will take our constituency.

“They don’t even discuss this with us!” the Wangsa Maju MCA organising secretary Lim Choon Hong told a press conference at divisional headquarters in Setapak this morning.

Echoing Lim, division deputy chief Ng Kiat Ling said Wangsa Maju MCA has been working hard for many years in the constituency which has been the traditional seat of the party in Kuala Lumpur.

“You (Umno) now want to take it (Wangsa Maju). This is unfair to us!” Ng said.

Wangsa Maju Umno has been eyeing the mixed seat since 2008 and wants to field Shafie, who is the party’s division chief.

Last Friday, Shafie had attended a prayer session and luncheon with Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin in Wangsa Maju, setting tongues wagging that he has obtained the Umno central leadership’s blessings to go for Wangsa Maju.

Speculation was that the MCA had agreed to Umno taking over the seat, causing disgruntlement in the Chinese-based party.

Some 3,000 Mmca member ngo support yew teong look 100413 2CA members and supporters rallied at a dinner last night, demanding that Wangsa Maju MCA division chief Yew Teong Look (right) be named as the BN candidate.

Some members directed their anger at MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek for not informing the grassroots about the alleged decision to give away the traditionally MCA constituency to Umno.

The rally-cum-dinner held at Danau Kota, Setapak was organised by some 80 local organisations.

Holding umbrellas under the rain, Yew’s supporters unfurled banners supporting him and took turns to speak on stage, demanding that the BN retains Yew as the coalition’s candidate.

Community leader Lim Cheng Hock, who claimed to be a MCA veteran, described Chua as “kiasu” (afraid of losing) and “kiasi” (afraid of death).
