Former MACC chief Dzulkifli Ahmad has called on former judge Gopal Sri Ram to explain why the prosecution agreed to a plea bargain in Riza Aziz’s billion-ringgit money laundering case.
Dzulkifli (above) said this was as Sri Ram is acting as senior deputy public prosecutor (DPP) in several 1MDB-linked criminal cases, which among others, involved former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak and his stepson Riza.
This after Riza, who faced five counts of laundering up to US$248 million (RM1.08 billion) allegedly misappropriated from the sovereign wealth fund, was accorded a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) last Thursday by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court upon application by Sri Ram.
The DNAA would be subject to the accused fulfilling his end of the agreement, including returning an estimated US$107.3 million (RM465.3 million) to the government.

A search on the Malaysian Bar website showed that Dzulkifli is a registered lawyer working with Scivetti & Associates. His data was last updated on July 9.
The firm was recently appointed by Umno to look into recovering cash seized by police from premises linked to former prime minister Najib Razak.
Money and valuables, worth more than RM1.1 billion, were seized from the premises, in connection with investigations into the 1MDB scandal.
Tania Scivetti, who runs the firm, had worked with Umno lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah on several cases. Scivetti, born in Australia and educated in the US, was admitted to practice in the high court of Malaysia in 2007.
Shafee is the lead counsel for Najib, who faces graft charges relating to SRC International, a former 1MDB subsidiary that is now owned by the Finance Ministry.
Dzulkifli, a graduate of International Islamic University Malaysia, resigned as MACC chief on May 14, five days after Pakatan Harapan won the 14th general election.
