Sarawak hunts 87 North Koreans with expired work permits
KUCHING: The hunt is on in Sarawak for another 87 North Koreans whose work permit has expired.
The authorities had earlier picked up 53 North Koreans for being in the country without valid work permits. They are expected to be deported soon.
Deputy Home Minister Masir Kujat told The Borneo Post yesterday that locating the 87 North Koreans was the top priority of the police and the Immigration Department.
“For the North Korean workers who have valid working permits and documents, if they want to go back, they can be sent back. The question now is whether their employers are willing to let them go,” he said.
There are 36 North Koreans holding working permits in the state.
It was recently revealed that 176 North Koreans were working in the construction and mining sectors in the state but that 140 had been staying here as illegal workers.
On March 7, police and immigration officers detained 37 of them at Kuala Tatau and on March 13, another 16 were detained in Lawas, The Borneo Post reported.

Govt should explain North Korean participation in MM2H, says former diplomat
Last updated on 12 March 2017 – 08:08pm
PETALING JAYA: The government should provide an explanation on how almost 200 North Koreans were able to participate in the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme since 2014, says former diplomat Datuk Noor Farida Ariffin.
Surprised by the North Korean participation in the MM2H, Noor Farida said the matter is a great cause for concern.
“I think Malaysians generally are not just curious but appalled at the sheer lack of wisdom on the part of our Home Ministry in allowing visa-free travel to Malaysia for North Koreans.
“This is normally done on the basis of reciprocity. But how many Malaysians are interested in touring a country like North Korea?”she asked.
Speaking to theSun today, Noor Farida also questioned the security vetting by the police as part of the MM2H programme, claiming that North Korea is known to send spies to other countries.
“Our authorities appear to have a lax attitude towards our country’s security. This is unacceptable,” she added.

TAWAU: Only 315 North Koreans remain in Malaysia at the present time, and they include students, Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) participants, as well as workers in various sectors.
They are the remnants of 2,453 North Koreans residing in this country between 2014 and this year, according to Immigration statistics, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi revealed today.
“Out of the 2,453, 11 were students and 801 were under temporary work visit permits, (including) 180 miners in Sarawak.
“But in our current records, only 315 are still here (as of today). The rest must have returned to their home country,” he said to reporters after launching the ‘Jalinan Kasih’ carnival at the municipal field here.
Zahid said the movements of the 315 will not be monitored, but methods exist which can be used to oversee things, especially when “negative elements” surface.

Malaysian admits trying to sell North Korean battlefield radios in violation of UN sanctions
- Posted 28 Feb 2017 15:11
KUALA LUMPUR: The secretary-general of the veterans association for Malaysia’s ruling party UMNO said on Tuesday (Feb 28) that he was part of a company that tried to sell North Korean battlefield radio equipment for about three years, before realising it was in violation of United Nations sanctions.
Mr Mustapha Yaakub had been a director at International Global System and International Golden Services, companies which were set up in 2005 with three North Koreans. He said he was introduced to them by a North Korean embassy official whom he believes was the second secretary.
They attempted to sell Glocom battlefield radios in Malaysia and planned to do so internationally as well before Mr Mustapha ordered the company to shut down “about three years later”.
Glocom is a front company run by North Korean intelligence agents that sells battlefield radio equipment in violation of UN sanctions, reported Reuters on Monday, citing a UN draft report for the Security Council.
It is controlled by the Reconnaissance General Bureau, the North Korean intelligence agency tasked with overseas operations and weapons procurement, the report said, citing undisclosed information it obtained.
Despite exhibiting the products, Mr Mustapha said not a single unit was sold as there were no buyers.
“There were already sanctions but I didn’t know the products were under UN sanctions until after we were advised by the police and the Ministry of International Trade and Industry,” Mr Mustapha told Channel NewsAsia and Japanese media at his office. “When we knew the products were not sellable by the market because of the sanctions, we quickly decided to close the company,” he explained.
“I don’t know if Glocom is really a company belonging to North Korean intelligence,” he added. “I only know that Glocom is the products we were going to market that’s all … We purely meant business. I accepted a partnership (offer) from North Korea as a businessman without further investigating their background.”
..
Our ties with Pyongyang: What we didn’t know
.
After last month’s assassination, the Reuters news agency dug up more evidence of North Korea’s links with Malaysia. The most explosive of them caused alarm bells to peal wildly in Putrajaya. Apparently, North Korean intelligence agents ran an office in Kuala Lumpur’s Little India, from where they sold battlefield radio equipment in violation of a United Nations arms embargo on Pyongyang.
The company selling the equipment is called Glocom. Were Malaysian authorities aware or unaware of what was happening under their noses? The contravention of the UN embargo is certainly unsettling news, considering that Malaysia was elected president of the UN Security Council for two consecutive terms.
Glocom has claimed that it is no longer operating. Its website has been re-registered as International Golden Services (IGS).
Glocom’s local contact was Mustapha Yaakub, and since 2014 he has been listed as a director of IGS. Mustapha is also the secretary of Umno Veterans.
Reuter’s revelation exposed this and tarnished our reputation as a respected member of the UN. In simple terms, the North Koreans were selling weaponry from Malaysian shores in clear contravention of a UN Security Council resolution.

In South Korea, we often use the terms such as “house poor” or “car poor” to describe those who are living in a poor condition after spending too much on a house or a car.
In that sense, North Korea is “WMD poor”, and is still widely using pre-WW2 equipment, after spending a tremendous amount of its national resources upgrading its Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD).
Until now, many South Korean military experts believed that the Korean People’s Army (KPA) would use the archaic “human-wave strategy” during times of war to overcome the disadvantages coming from its outdated equipment.
But we may have been wrong.
NOT JUST A WALKIE-TALKIE COMPANY
Earlier this week, Reuters reported on a “North Korean spy agency” running an “arms operation out of Malaysia.”
According to the piece, “North Korean intelligence agents” were behind the setting up and running of a military equipment company called Glocom in Malaysia: an act, it argued, that would be a direct violation of UN sanctions.
But it is not the violation of sanctions that worries me, but what the company’s product brochures show: that the KPA has made huge progress in the technology available to it.
North Korea is “WMD poor” – or so we thought
What Glocom is selling is not just walkie-talkies, it is military equipment that will significantly improve the KPA’s C4I capability, should it be implemented correctly.
This acronym stands for Command, Control, Communication, Computer and Intelligence, and is a core communications system that could be considered the “nerve system” of a modern army.
.
All of the equipment that Glocom has allegedly sold so far hints at the level of KPA’s C4I capability, and if what Glocom is claiming is true, then it is highly possible that the KPA has so far surpassed our expectations.

Veteran Umno leader admits to role in N Korean spy company
.
A veteran Umno secretary-general, Mustapha Ya’akub, has admitted his involvement in setting up a company, International Global System (M) Sdn Bhd (IGS), which was linked to Glocom company (Global Communications Co) selling battlefield radios from North Korea.
Mustapha said his involvement was strictly business, following recommendation by the North Korean Embassy.
He told Bernama yesterday that IGS was set up in 2005 with two partners from the republic, whom he knew as ‘Madam Ryang’ and ‘Madam Pyon’, to market the products manufactured by Glocom, the military equipment company.
According to Mustapha, the company was later run by a North Korean man identified as Kim Chang-hyok, as its manager.
“I knew Glocom was a North Korean product but I didn’t know that the country was sanctioned by the United Nations (UN).
“Our relationship was strictly business. I knew them after being introduced by the North Korean Embassy… according to the embassy, they were looking for partners to market their products in Malaysia,” he said when contacted here.
Mustapha said he agreed to do business with them after finding that several communication products were then marketable in Malaysia and Asia.
“However, we decided to close down IGS after realising that all North Korean products were banned by the UN, and also upon advice by Bukit Aman police and the International Trade and Industry Ministry.

EC guarantees no artificial fingers in coming polls
The Election Commission (EC) today assured it will not allow artificial fingers to be used by certain parties for fraud purposes in the coming general election.
Its chairperson Mohd Hashim Abdullah, who gave the assurance, also assured that the electoral process conducted is clean, transparent and free of any fraud and irregularities.
He issued the statement today following an allegation by a Selangor state assemblyperson that artificial fingers were imported from China by certain parties to be used for fraud purposes in the coming general election in order to retain the existing regime.
“In addition, the source of an image of an artificial finger and a bottle of ink that went viral on social media has been identified.
“EC will ensure there will not be any fraud or irregularities in the polling process,” he said, adding that any such attempts to sabotage the electoral system in Malaysia would be subjected to legal action.
Mohd Hashim said the EC was taking the allegation and viral message seriously and was investigating them.
He said EC had identified that the source of the image was believed to have been taken from the akikofujita.com website that published an article ‘Prosthetic Fingers Help Reform Former Yakuza Members’ on Dec 16, 2013.
The image was later used by certain parties in Indonesia purportedly for the ongoing 2017 Indonesian election, he said.

PAS MP: My right to buy luxury Audi SUV for wife
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 22 — Under fire for gifting his wife a luxury Audi Q7 sports utility vehicle (SUV), PAS MP Datuk Dr Khairuddin Aman Razali said today he has a right to buy it since he could afford it.
Khairuddin, the information chief for the Islamist party’s Ulama wing, claimed that the purchase of the luxury car was a petty issue that got blown out of proportion to distract from PAS’ proposal to allow Shariah courts to sentence harsher punishments.
“This is a petty issue. I have a right to buy anything I want. I could even buy a lorry or a plane, it is none of their business,” Khairuddin was quoted as saying by The Star Online.
“I bought the car using legitimate sources and I could afford it,” the Kuala Nerus MP added.
Khairuddin also blamed “socialist groups” for the accusations, but did not elaborate.
The issue cropped up after a Facebook post by one Datin Norhayati Abd Malek, believed to be Khairuddin’s wife, announcing her new car as given to her by her husband. The post has since been deleted.
