Take responsibility for BN loss in Penang, Teng told

Susan Loone

Penang Gerakan’s internal crisis appears to be continuing to brew, despite its chairperson Teng Chang Yeow announcing on Sept 4 that the matter has been ironed out.

Today, Gerakan national legal and human rights bureau chief Baljit Singh said Teng has to take responsibility for the party’s losses in the general elections as he was the “captain” and the state BN chief.

Baljit reminded Teng that Prime Minister and BN chief Najib Adbul Razak had appointed him (Teng) as the state BN chief in Penang.

“Therefore, it is not good to blame others. Before you blame others, look into the mirror first. I am not defending Umno, but do not downgrade or hit them,” Baljit said at a press conference today.

“For once, take responsibility for what happened in Penang. Don’t take leave, and then come back. Gerakan is not a musical chair. Be responsible, or else you know where the exit door is,” he added.

Captains don’t belittle their crew, Nazri reminded

MCA central committee member Ti Lian Ker has dismissed Umno supreme council member Mohamed Nazri as being ‘his usual arrogant self’ in boasting that Umno can be arrogant and yet still win elections.

However, he reminded that Nazri – who is also the tourism minister – that he is only able to do so because of BN.

“He can display his arrogance today because he is still a minister, as a result of the strong foundation of BN and all its component parties. The achievements of BN are a result of the efforts of all component parties, whereby Umno is at the helm today.

“As the captain of the ship, you do not disregard the efforts of the crew or display your pompous self with no shame or humility. You don’t tell your crew that I am bongkak, terer, and arrogant because I am the captain,” he said in a statement today.

Fortunately, he said, Nazri is merely the ‘assistant’ captain, or he would do well the remember the importance of teamwork and the welfare of his crew.

BN lost Penang because of Umno, Teng reminds Zahid

As the 14th general election draws near, BN component parties are now starting to blame each other for past losses.

Penang BN, led by Teng Chang Yeow, was evidently rankled by Umno vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s remarks earlier today that component parties in the state seemed dependent on Umno’s machinery.

Taking a sarcastic swipe at the Malay ruling party, Teng, who is also the state Gerakan chief, said there is no denying Umno’s election machinery is superior.

“Their machinery is so good that they are unable to win back Kelantan and Selangor,” said Teng in a statement.

“Umno machinery under its vice-president Zahid himself as co-director of operation for Permatang Pauh by-election, did not win the Permatang Pauh by-election.”

Teng said Zahid should know why BN lost Penang in the 2008 and 2013 general elections.

During the past two polls, Umno managed to capture 11 and 10 seats respectively but Gerakan, MCA and MIC won zero seats.

“We lost Penang not because of machinery or unity but because of Umno!” claimed Teng.

Teng did not elaborate but it is learnt that Umno’s support of far-right Malay groups have caused uneasiness in non-Malay communities, which see Gerakan, MCA and MIC as endorsing Umno’s race-based politics.

“This is a well-known fact. If we still fail to understand this fact, we will continue to fail!” he added.

“There is no reason to reopen the old wound. It is time to rectify and strengthen the cooperation.”

Gerakan’s Teng sneers at Umno’s polls machinery

September 10, 2016

Their machinery is so good that they are unable to win back Kelantan and Selangor, he says sarcastically after Zahid’s remark about winning back Penang.

PETALING JAYA: Penang Gerakan’s Teng Chang Yeow has lashed out at Umno vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for calling on Barisan Nasional component parties to follow in Umno’s footsteps to recapture Penang.

Teng, who is also Penang BN chairman, responded with heavy sarcasm to  Zahid’s remark at the Balik Pulau Umno division delegates’ meeting.

“There is no denial that Umno has better election machinery. Their machinery is so good that they are unable to win back Kelantan and Selangor,” Teng said in a statement today.

“Umno’s machinery, under Zahid himself, as co-director of operations for the Permatang Pauh by-election, did not win the Permatang Pauh by election!”

Teng said that BN had lost power in Penang not because of machinery or unity but because of Umno itself.

“This is a well-known fact. If we still fail to understand this fact, we will continue to fail!” he said. “There is no reason to reopen old wounds. It is time to rectify and strengthen our cooperation.”

Zahid seeks greater BN cooperation to win Penang

Umno vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today advised Barisan Nasional component parties to keep abreast with Umno in Penang to recapture the state in the next general election.

Umno was prepared to share knowledge and assist parties such as Gerakan and MCA as well as cooperate with all BN component parties to win the state, he said when opening the Balik Pulau Umno division delegates meeting.

Ahmad Zahid, who is the deputy prime minister, said it was important for all component parties to step up cooperation to ensure a BN victory.

“The machineries of BN components seem to be dependent on the Umno machinery,” he said, and added that the other BN component parties must emulate the Umno machinery to garner victory.

The other BN component parties should not be arrogant and shy away from Umno’s offer of assistance because the ultimate aim of BN was to recapture Penang from the opposition.
