#SAVESJI

Dear Johannians and alumni members,

We regret to to inform that as at 11.50am today, the electrical supply to St. John’s Institution Kuala Lumpur has been disconnected by TNB due to the school’s inability to meet its monthly payment. Our total outstanding with TNB as of 31st July 2018 stands at RM245,348.54.

We wish to record that TNB had given due consideration and time before finally deciding to disconnect the supply. The struggles of St. John’s Institution has come a long way as the school is defined the under the Ministry of Education as a Mission School and therefore, will only be subject to a monthly allocation of RM5,000.00 a month to cover its utilities and operational expenses.

To note that SJI’s operational monthly expenses crosses RM20,000.00 a month with our average TNB consumption hovering at RM13,000.00 a month. As a result of a lengthy appeal to the various stakeholders and fruitless struggles to raise funds, the school today conceded to allow TNB to disconnect the supply.

SJAA and the school’s Board of Governors are putting in all efforts to solve the matter amicably with TNB and we are pleased to inform that TNB has given SJI time to deliberate the matter further and had reconnected the electricity at about 1.30pm today.

As it stands, the SJAA is in consistent communication with TNB to resolve the matter and hope that we could structure a sustainable repayment model for SJI and eventually protect the school from any further risk of utilities disconnection.

With this, after giving profound deliberation, the SJAA has decided to launch #SAVESJI Fund to resolve the outstanding amount due to TNB for the short and medium term solution in aid of our Alma Mater.

For this, we humbly call upon all Johannians regardless, if we could all unite as MIGHTY JOHANNIANS to save St. John’s Institution by contributing to this #SAVESJI Fund. Your kind help and aid to SJI will go a long way not only for the school but more importantly the opportunity of future Johannians to receive their education and inherit the JOHANNIAN SPIRIT the same way we did.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 23 — SMK St. John, one of the oldest schools in Kuala Lumpur, will once again be known by its old name, St. John’s Institution.

The announcement was made by the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah in his speech during the school’s 2016 Academic Excellence Award ceremony here, today.

“The original name of the school is very much appreciated by every Johannian who felt they lost something very valuable after the name was changed.

“Every Johannian expressed their wish that the school revert to the original name. Alhamdulillah, it received positive response.

“On behalf of fellow Johannians, I express thanks to the minister and the Ministry of Education for agreeing to the request for this school to revert to its original name, St. John’s Institution,” he added.

Sultan Nazrin is an old boy of St John’s Institution, having studied there for two years (1969-1970) before furthering his studies in the United Kingdom.

Speaking to Bernama later, St. John’s Institution principal Dr MV.  Puvanendran said the school’s management submitted a proposal to revert to the school’s original name early this year.

“We are glad that the ministry has endorsed our request to change the name.  As a very established school with a long history, heritage and tradition, we feel it is an honour and privilege that we keep its original name.”
