Cops being ‘selective’, Bersih 2.0 says after ‘red shirts’ not probed for Friday gathering

By Mayuri Mei Lin

KUALA LUMPUR, March 20 — Bersih 2.0 today suggested that the police have “selective” interpretations of the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012, noting that the authority had refrained from taking any action against the hundreds of “red shirts” protesters who swarmed Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Putrajaya office on Friday.

Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah added that the police were simply complicating the enforcement of the Act by applying it differently for various rallies.

“Oh yes, selective interpretation of the PAA,” she said when asked if it was fair of the police not to take action against the “red shirts” when previous rallies by Bersih 2.0 were marred by police action.

“Different standards set by the police. It’s confusing and sends wrong message – for red shirts, it free for all of them to act even if it’s disgraceful or violent,” Chin said in a text message to Malay Mail Online.

She insisted that while peaceful protests are permitted under the PAA, the police should be fair when enforcing the law, and should simply facilitate all rallies moving forward.

“But whether protest or not everyone had (sic) the right to express themselves and it’s the duty of the police to ensure the safety and security. By saying there’s no need for permit is merely stating the obvious.

“Most important is – do the police understand their roles & responsibilities in upholding freedom of expression? Moving forward, police need to facilitate and not frustrate any gatherings,” she added.

Police: ‘Red Shirts’ memo delivery to Dr M ‘peaceful,’ not protest

By Shazwan Mustafa Kamal

KUALA LUMPUR, March 19 — No action will be taken against Datuk Jamal Md Yunos and hundreds of his “Red Shirts” who gathered outside Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s office in Putrajaya yesterday as the event was not an illegal assembly, police have said.

Putrajaya deputy police chief DSP S Vijaya Rao said that those who took part in yesterday’s event did not break any law as they only congregated briefly outside the Perdana Leadership Foundation to deliver a memorandum to Dr Mahathir.

“The thing is, when all the NGOs yesterday came together, it is not a protest, it is not an illegal gathering as they just wanted to pass a memorandum to Tun (Dr Mahathir).

“Things ran very smoothly, and it was peaceful, the people who handed the memorandum dispersed shortly after that,” he told Malay Mail Online when contacted.

Vijaya said there had also been no need for Jamal to notify the police about the event beforehand as it was not a public gathering, and therefore the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012 did not apply to yesterday’s event.

“No need for that (PAA) We monitored the event, and will continue to monitor matters, it was not a protest like Bersih (4), that one was a protest,” Vijaya explained, referring to last year’s Bersih 4 rally which saw thousands of Malaysians take to the streets demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

PUTRAJAYA – Hundreds of “Mat Rempit” and “Red Shirts” have congregated at Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s office here as part of an Umno leader’s bid to submit a memorandum in protest of his Citizens’ Declaration.

A strong police presence is visible at the Perdana Leadership Foundation that serves as the former prime minister’s office, where Sungai Besar Umno chief Datuk Jamal Md Yunos is planning to deliver the memorandum.

Jamal has yet to arrive but crowds of his “Red Shirt” supporters continue to stream in on buses, motorcycles and cars, creating a commotion.

Staff at the Perdana Leadership Foundation, an anti-war organisation Dr Mahathir set up after he retired as prime minister, have sealed the entrance of the office.

Red horde swarms Dr M’s Putrajaya office

zj

Around 500 protesters, led by Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos, braved the scorching heat this afternoon to rally against former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad in Putrajaya.

The protesters, many of whom wore red, carried banners criticising Mahathir, and rejecting the Citizens’ Declaration he signed on March 4.

One of the banners said Mahathir was being a DAP tool, while another reads, “Dr M jangan jadi Melayu mudah lupa” (Dr M, don’t be a Malay who easily forgets).

They gathered outside Mahathir’s office at the Perdana Leadership Foundation, where the gates were closed to the red horde.

A riot police unit was stationed inside the compound.

Jamal said the group consisted of leaders of the Gabungan NGO-NGO Malaysia group, from Negri Sembilan, Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Pahang.
