When Khalid was IGP, he warned Zaid Ibrahim, “Don’t you dare hold any anti-Najib rally!” Zaid replied, “I know the law. And it’s not a rally.” When will Khalid answer for his deeds?

March 27 ‘rally’ is closed-door gathering, says

The supposed rally against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak by former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad and former law minister Zaid Ibrahim is not a public protest.

Instead, Zaid said the March 27 event is just a closed-door meeting.

“I see many readers still talking about a rally on the March 27. It’s a gathering of leaders in a closed-door setting.

“I never said it will be a street protest, or a public rally.

“I’m not like Bersih,” Zaid tweeted today.

ZAID TICKS OFF IGP: IF NAJIB & SYCOPHANTS
CAN GATHER TO KISS HIS HAND, WHY CAN’T M’SIANS MEET TO ASK HIM TO QUIT

KUALA LUMPUR – The war of words between former minister, Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, and the Inspector-General of Police continues, with the former telling the nation’s top cop to “stop putting words in my mouth”.

Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar had warned Zaid against a blog post, where he had called for a “meet” on March 27 to demand the resignations of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Khalid and Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali.

Khalid had chided Zaid, saying that as a lawyer, he “should know what is and is not permitted” when it comes to removing the Prime Minister under the Federal Constitution.

“He will face the law if he proceeds to hold the gathering next month,” Khalid warned.

In retort, Zaid, former de-facto law minister, had asked the top cop to “understand simple English”.

“I wrote in my blog, ‘let’s get together, let’s meet and ask for Najib, the IGP and the AG to resign. I never said public rally to force Najib’s removal. Don’t put words in my mouth,” Zaid said when contacted on Sunday.

Peaceful assembly is legal

He reminded that the right to assemble was enshrined in the Federal Constitution and asked Khalid not to misrepresent the law.

“If Najib and his friends can gather to kiss his hand, other Malaysians can gather to give their opinions of the Prime Minister. That right is always peaceful and is enshrined in the Constitution.

“So I don’t want the IGP to misrepresent the law, his job is to defend the law. Tell him not to worry, I’m not going to break any laws. I am appealing to Malaysians to get together, that’s all,” he said.

I know the law, Zaid tells IGP on anti-PM rally

Yap Jia Hee     Published 20 Feb 2016

Despite the warning from the police chief to desist, former law minister Zaid Ibrahim said that he will go ahead with his plan to hold a gathering to call for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s resignation.

He stressed that as a man of law – as police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said he was – he will ensure that the gathering will be held within legal confines.

“I know the law and we will do things legally. I am 65 years old already and I also don’t want go to jail,” Zaid told Malaysiakini.

Khalid yesterday warned Zaid about proceeding with his plans, reminding him that as a lawyer he should know what lies within and without the legal boundaries.

Khalid had said that the removal of a prime minister can only be either through a general election or a vote of no confidence in Parliament, and any other means than those would be illegal.

Zaid, however, countered that everybody was obligated to follow the law, including the police themselves.

“The police must also act within the law,” said the former minister.

‘Right to gather’

He said that people should always be able to express their views through many ways, including gatherings.

“We can express our views; we have rights. If you don’t want to join us, that is your business.

“But you cannot tell us how to feel about Najib. We have the right to gather and to express our opinion,” said Zaid.

He said the police should not feel worried when people wanted to express their views within legal means.

IGP warns against anti-PM rally, reminds Zaid of legal background

Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has courted a stern warning from the police over his call for a gathering to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Issuing the caution, inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar reminded Zaid that he is a lawyer and should be aware of what is permitted and prohibited.

“Let me warn him that as a lawyer, he should know the ‘legal’ means to remove the prime minister as provided for under our (federal) constitution,” he told Malaysiakini.

“If he has forgotten, let me remind him that it is either through the general election or a vote of no confidence in Parliament. Other than that, it is illegal,” he said.

Khalid stressed that the ex-minister would face the full brunt of the law if he proceeded with his plan to hold the gathering on March 27.

He was responding to Zaid urging Malaysians to support former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who has been campaigning against Najib, and attend the gathering.

Zaid proposes March 27 gathering to call for Najib’s resignation

Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has proposed that a gathering be held on March 27 to call for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s resignation.

In an acerbic blog posting, the ex-Umno lawmaker said the current situation cannot be allowed to prolong and urged Malaysians to rally behind Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

For too long, Zaid pointed out, Malaysians have been overcome with the fears that Najib has imposed on the public.

Zaid accused Najib of dismantling public institutions by appointing only yes-men to bodies such as the Public Accounts Committee.

“His ministers and top civil servants are closing their eyes to his misdeeds because they think he will not last long. Little do they realise that this is doing great damage to the country.

“We must not allow the situation to continue one minute longer… We must collectively show Najib that we are not afraid of him,” he added.

‘Dr M wants all parties to set aside differences to oust Najib’

Kow Gah Chie

Dr Mahathir Mohamad has agreed that all political parties should set aside their differences and join hands to oust Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, said a PAS lawmaker.

Speaking to Malaysiakini, Mahfuz Omar said this was one of the issues discussed during his hour-long meeting with the former prime minister this morning.

“Both of us agreed that Najib needs to be replaced immediately and a decision on a new PM would be made later.

“We agreed that we should set aside the differences between parties and ideologies, we should look forward,” he said.

“That was what he (Mahathir) said – set aside the differences and save Malaysia,” he said, adding that they can only replace Najib when they are united.
