Labour shortage in Camerons

ACUTE labour shortage is threatening Cameron Highlands’ agricultural sector, which can lead to severe financial losses for farmers and rising vegetable prices.
Cameron Highlands Agricultural Cooperative Association representative Wong Seng Yee said the shortage was about 50 per cent, with at least a quarter of farmlands lying fallow.
“The tight manpower situation has been ongoing for many years, but has never been this serious,” he told the New Sunday Times.
“Farmers are facing market failure and production problems, especially those who export their produce.
“The labour shortage delays harvest and replanting, thereby reducing yields, which means they are not able to meet their contractual obligations.”
He said the situation could lead to higher vegetable prices.
Cameron Highlands Malay Farmers Association president Datuk Syed Abdul Rahman said many farmers depended on manual labour due to geographical constraints.
Farmers were also unwilling to invest in technology as many of them, especially small-scale farmers, relied on temporary occupation leases (TOL) for the land they used.
The advancing age of some farmers left them with no choice but to depend on foreign workers because locals demanded higher wages, which farmers were unwilling to pay.

‘You talk too much, please leave,’ Pahang MB ticks off resident
A group of Cameron Highlands residents had hoped to petition Pahang Menteri Besar Adnan Yaakob for their land titles.
However, the meeting ended on a sour note when the menteri besar became upset with one of the residents, whom he claimed was talking too much. He then told the group to leave.
Led by PSM Cameron Highlands secretary Suresh Kumar, some 20 residents had waited outside Adenan’s office to raise their plight with him.
In a video of the encounter uploaded by PSM on Facebook, the menteri besar stopped to listen to Suresh but became annoyed when a woman decided to vent her frustration.
“If you can wait for 40 years why not (another) 10 years? Awak banyak bayak cakap, sila balik (You talk too much, please leave).
“Okay? Bye-bye. Vanakam, vanakam, nandri (thank you),” he said and walked into the building.
Earlier, Adnan told the group that they were not the only ones who had complaints about land titles, pointing out that there had been 4,000 applications in Cameron Highlands.
However, Suresh said the residents had been farming on their land for 40 years but have yet to receive land titles.
“Just wait, be patient. (The government) last time did not take notice of the matter but now we know, do you understand?” said Adnan.
He added that the process of measuring the relevant parcels of land alone would take two years.

On a mission for a greener Camerons
.

Nature lover Ramakrishnan Ramasamy’s goal to save Cameron Highlands is filled with challenges. As the president of the non-governmental organisation, Regional Environment Awareness Cameron Highlands, he faces constant threats from those who want him to back down.
FOR Brinchang boy Ramakrishnan Ramasamy, life is inextricably intertwined with an uphill battle to save Cameron Highlands from environmental degradation.
.
Ramakrishnan, who runs his own business supplying groceries and cooking gas to residents and businesses, also leads the local chapter of the Malaysian Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association (MVFRA) in Cameron Highlands.
But to the public, he is known as the president of the non-governmental organisation, Regional Environment Awareness Cameron Highlands (Reach), since 2000.
This is his story:
“I could not bear to see Cameron Highlands in shambles.
“The region is still reeling from negative environmental impact from unsustainable farming practices and commercial over-development.
“These actions have resulted in a host of problems, from falling ground temperatures to landslides, dying rivers, traffic jams, littering and polluting of the water supply.
“Disorder was the order of the day. This was not the Cameron Highlands we all know.
“Reach was established in 1999 at the suggestion of the Malaysia Nature Society and WWF Malaysia.
“I was made the president the following year and have been leading the organisation ever since.
.
“One of the first issues we raised was about water shortages in Cameron Highlands.
“We then moved on to highlight other problems such as corruption, illegal forest clearing, unsustainable farming practices, water pollution, the influx of illegal migrant workers and the need for reforestation.
“My crusade for a greener environment inevitably incurred hatred and enemies from among those with vested interests in the rapidly growing agricultural activities and commercialisation of Cameron Highlands.
“On many occasions, there were unknown individuals who issued warnings and even death threats to me.
.
“Despite the threats, I remain steadfast in my mission.
“I even had to change my mobile phone number a few times because of constant harassment. Even my vehicle had been vandalised on several occasions.
“In 2003, we gained another milestone with the setting up of a biodiversity centre in Gunung Brinchang to promote and support the teaching of environment and science topics.
.
“I am well aware that despite my constant struggle in championing the environment, Cameron Highlands will not be able to return to how it was.
“But I hope, at the very least, we have done our part in outlining the steps for the future generations to undertake as we define and build the culture of quality tourism.

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said a distress call was received at 1.47pm today over the fire that occurred at KM45 of Jalan Simpang Pulai-Cameron Highlands.
“When we arrived, the fire had spread. Strong winds blowing at the area made our rescue operations difficult,” he said, adding that the site was located 150m above sea level.
Seven Orang Asli, said the spokesman, also rendered their services during the operations.
