GEORGE TOWN: Animal rights activists and animal lovers claim that the culling of stray dogs in Penang has not stopped.

According to the activists, stray dogs held at the Penang City Council (MBPP) dog pound in Jalan Sungai are being culled despite offers by the public to adopt them.

Today about 50 activists and animal lovers marched from Jalan Sungai in Sungai Pinang to Komtar to hand over a memorandum to the state government in protest against the killing of the strays.

The group’s spokesperson A. Vaneytha said she has evidence that the culling has not stopped despite Penang being declared rabies free.

“We have video evidence that the killing of stray dogs is still going on, we have posted it on Facebook,”she told reporters at Komtar today.

The group also urged the MBPP dog pound to allow the public to adopt dogs from the pound.

“Before the rabies-infection, we can go inside the pound to check the condition of the dogs and nurture them for adoption, but now we have not been allowed to do so,” said Vaneytha.

The Penang government had conducted a three-week dog culling exercise in Sept, after several rabies cases were reported. It was then called off on Oct 9, citing a ‘low prevalence’ of rabies cases. The order to vaccinate all pet dogs is still in effect.
…However, animal feeders and interest groups allege that local authorities were seen ‘hunting’ and ‘killing’ dogs. They also claim to have video evidence of it happening at dog pounds.

Penang had only recorded four cases — three of which were dog-bite cases and one canine infected with rabies.
