Umno veterans shoot at ‘arrogant head of cowboy country’

The Umno veterans association is incensed that United States President Barack Obama held a meeting with ‘pro-opposition’ NGOs.
In a statement, the association’s secretary said Obama did not respect his host.
“Umno veterans are disappointed with Obama for not knowing how to respect his host when he decided to meet with opposition and anti-government groups while here on official duty to attend the Asean Summit.
“This attitude shows the head of the cowboy country (ketua negara koboi) wanting to display his arrogance and insensitivity towards his host,” he added.
Mustapha also questioned if meeting the opposition groups was part of Obama’s official functions.
The US president had met with NGO leaders such as Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah, Negaraku patron Ambiga Sreenevasan, C4 director Cynthia Gabriel, and Nisha Ayub from the Justice for Sisters group.
Also present was Malaysiakini chief executive officer Premesh Chandran.

Social activists identified corruption as the main concern in Malaysia which in turn affected public institutions and human rights during an hour-long meeting with US President Barack Obama today.
Cynthia Gabriel, executive director of Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism, brought up corruption allegations involving 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and how this affected the independence of public institutions in probing the debt-ridden state-owned investor.
Obama listened well and remarked that the anti-corruption agenda was very important to him, she said.
…
Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan said she told Obama that since their last meeting in April last year, Malaysia’s human rights record had deteriorated.
Other activists raised issues of how investigations into 1MDB were being stymied, added Ambiga, president of the National Human Rights Society.
“At the end of the day, we all made the point that corruption is the most problematic issue currently and which undoubtedly impinges on human rights,” she told The Malaysian Insider.
She added that it was heartening that Obama made a public statement before his chat with them about how he appreciated the work of activists in Malaysia and the challenges they faced.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 21 — Around 50 members of Hizbut Tahrir Malaysia demonstrated outside the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) to protest the visit of US president Barack Obama whom they accused of killing innocent Muslims.
The hardline Islamic group said Malaysia should have allowed Obama in due to the US’ alleged crimes against Islamic nations in the Middle East.
“We don’t want Obama here. He should not be here and we should have nothing to do with him or his deals,” said Hizbut Tahrir activist Razi Salleh referring to the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal that Obama is championing.
“Get out of the country, we don’t want to sign anything with you. It will be paving our way to hell.”
The group also urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to not sign the TPP and called on other Muslim leaders here as well to protest Obama’s visit.
