No ransom, no head? Was Sarawakian engineer Bernard Then beheaded because no ransom was paid?

Sabahan Thien Nyuk Fun, 50, and Sarawakian Bernard Then, 39,  were abducted by Southern Philippines militant group Abu Sayyaf six months ago.

Thien was freed after the kidnappers had reportedly received some 30 million pesos (S$900,000) in ransom.

One of Muktadil brothers linked to kidnap of Malaysians detained

PETALING JAYA: One of the Muktadil brothers linked to the kidnapping of two Malaysian hostages in May has been detained by Filipino police.

According to Jolo police chief Major Junpikar Sitin, Abu Sayyaf member Kadafi Muktadil (pix), who was involved in a vehicular accident, was receiving treatment at a hospital when he was arrested by Panamao police.

“Yes, he was involved in a vehicular accident and Panamao police department is handling the case,” Major Sitin told The Star Sunday.

He said that Kadafi checked into Sulu Provincial Hospital using the name Amin Maing and was later arrested by Filipino authorities on Saturday evening.

Major Sitin said that Kadafi was still in hospital receiving treatment.

This comes in the wake of an arrest of another Abu Sayyaf member Saddam Jailani on Friday at the Port of Jolo.

Jailani together with Kadafi and his brother Mindas were involved in the kidnapping of restaurant manager Thien Nyuk Fun and Sarawakian tourist Bernard Then Ted Fen from the Ocean King Seafood Restaurant in Sandakan in May.

I see “caring” statements by politicians on beheading of Bernard Then. Where were they when he was alive & a hostage? They didn’t care.

21 November 2015

THIS IS WHAT THE AUTHORITIES WOULD LIKE US TO BELIEVE:

Then, who had gout and had lost his spectacles, was killed because he slowed down his captors who were being pursued by the military.

THIS MAY BE THE TRUTH:

Most likely – and this is corroborated by intelligence and security expert sources who told me slightly different but similar information – Then was murdered because of failure to meet the ultimatum given by the Abu Sayyaf to the negotiators on the day Thien was released.

The captors gave the negotiators nine days to give them ransom money which they believed was brought to Jolo but pocketed by Filipino politicians acting as middlemen in the negotiations.

“The ASG monitored that 60 million peso (RM5.4mil) was brought to Jolo but only 30 million peso was given to them by the negotiators,” said an intelligence source in Jolo.

I checked with several sources in Malaysia and they believed the allegation that millions of peso was pocketed was a vicious rumour because only 30 million peso was smuggled into Jolo.

When no ransom money was delivered, Then was beheaded.

“But why was Bernard beheaded?” I asked the intelligence source based in Jolo. “Why kill him when he is worth at least 30 million peso?”

“The ASG is angry that the politicians keep on pocketing the ransom money in kidnapping cases,” the source said.

PETALING JAYA: A severed head believed to be that of Malaysian hostage Bernard Then was found near a municipal council building in Jolo island on Tuesday evening, according to southern Philippines police officials.

Jolo police chief Major Junpikar Sitin told The Star that a street sweeper found the head inside a sack with the words “Bernard Then Ted Fen” at Marina Street at Barangay Wall City in Jolo about 8.30pm Tuesday.

He said they immediately cordoned the area off and subsequently took the head away for preservation at about 10.30pm.

“We have turned over the head to the military task force for preservation and DNA tests,” he said.

Sitin said the military doctors at the brigade camp in Jolo were now preserving the head pending a DNA test with Then’s family.

“He is my youngest son, he is my child…” said the man, recollecting memories of his son.

“I was just informed this morning. I just could not believe it. I hope you would give us some privacy,” he told the New Straits Times at the family’s home in Jalan Satok here today.

Terrorist group Abu Sayyaf has beheaded the last Malaysian hostage it kidnapped from a Sandakan restaurant in May this year, according to Singapore’s Straits Times.

Bernard Then was beheaded just hours after Prime Minister Najib Razak landed in Manila for the two-day summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

The paper’s portal quoted Philippines Joint Task Group Sulu Commander Brigadier-General Alan Arrojada as confirming that Then, 39, an engineer, was beheaded at around 4pm in the Abu Sayyaf stronghold of Jolo, Philippines.

The beheading came just after a week after Abu Sayyaf released another Malaysian hostage, Thien Nyuk Fun, the Ocean King Seafood Restaurant (photo) manager who was kidnapped along with Then.

The report said Then had suffered leg injuries while in captivity and had been slowing down his captors.

Philippines’ Abu Sayyaf beheads remaining Malaysian hostage seized from Sandakan resort

Philippines Correspondent

Islamist militants in the Philippines on Tuesday (Nov 17) beheaded the remaining Malaysian hostage they seized in May from a resort in Malaysia’s Sabah state.

Brigadier-General Alan Arrojado, commander of the Joint Task Group Sulu, said Mr Bernard Then, 39, an engineer, was beheaded at around 4pm at a remote Abu Sayyaf stronghold in Jolo island, in Sulu province, some 1,400km south of the capital Manila.

He said Mr Then’s family “failed to comply” with the militants’ demand “during their negotiation that prompted them to execute their plan”.

“Accordingly, the body was immediately buried in the vicinity where they beheaded the victim,” he said.

He said efforts were now being undertaken to locate Mr Then’s remains.

Mr Then was beheaded more than a week after the Abu Sayyaf released Ms Thien Nyuk Fun, 50, manager of the Ocean King Seafood Restaurant in Sandakan town, Sabah, reportedly after receiving some 30 million pesos (S$900,000) in ransom.

Mr Then and Ms Thien were taken from the same resort.
