The must-have BUKU POKET HAK ANDA for those attending Bersih 4

The 10,000 crowd DAP had hoped would turn up at the Bersih rally in Kuching never materialised but the crowd was nearer to the organisers’ target of 7,000.
Described as rather “tame and uneventful” by one rally participant, there were no incidents nor any arrests reported especially among those who wore yellow Bersih 4 t-shirts.
Police were out in numbers but the units trained in handling riot and crowd disorder, the Light Strike Force and the Public Order Riot Unit (Poru), were nowhere in sight anywhere in the city.
Rally participants, depending on which group they are, first gathered at either Taman Sri Sarawak mall near the city’s waterfront or the car par of the Jubilee ground athletics field before marching to the Song Kheng Hai rugby field – the site the state government had approved.

Bersih Kuching to pack 2,000 in rugby field
If shirt sales are a barometer to gauge the turnout at the Bersih rally in Kuching, there should be at least 2,000 people camping out at the Song Kheng Hai rugby ground this weekend.
But organisers of the rally that is campaigning for free and fair elections and to pile pressure on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to step down over alleged graft and financial mismanagement are quick to point out Kuching was only allocated 2,000 of the official yellow Bersih T-shirts.
They said from the enquiries and demand they have received, the turnout may be closer to the target of 7,000.
“We’re optimistic about reaching our target,” Bersih 4 Kuching rally organising chairperson Nicholas Mujah said today.
“Support for the event is high.”

Kuching Bersih organiser slams minister’s ‘English woman’ tag

KUCHING: Karen Shepherd, the Sarawakian Eurasian who is one of the most visible organisers of Kuching’s Bersih 4 rally this weekend, has hit out at a minister for labelling her a foreigner.
Shepherd, who is married to Peter John Jaban, the controversial former Radio Free Sarawak presenter, told reporters her family roots in Sarawak reached back five generations and she has a blue MyKad and a registered voter in Kuching.
“The minister attacked me for the colour of my skin and not for what I do or what I say. Yes, I am ‘orang puteh’ but whatever the colour of my skin, I am Sarawakian,” Shepherd said.
In a Bernama report on Wednesday, state Land Development Minister Tan Sri James Masing said it was “strange” for Bersih to allow “the English woman” to interfere in state affairs.
“I thought we are free from our English colonial masters. Where is the pride in allowing an outsider to speak on our behalf?” the PRS president told Bernama.

Bersih eyes Kuching rugby field for overnight rally after Padang Merdeka rejected
With the Sarawak government remaining adamant on its decision to not allow the Bersih 4 rally to be held at Padang Merdeka, Kuching, the organisers are now pressed for time to look for another venue to ensure the event will proceed as planned.
Since neither the state government nor the police have attempted to stop the August 29 and 30 rally from taking place, Kuching Bersih 4 committee chairman Nicholas Mujah said organisers are now thinking of using the Song Kheng Hai recreational ground for the event.
“We were made to understand we could not use Central Padang but could use any other venues,” he said, referring to Padang Merdeka’s old name.
Mujah said with the rally looming, organisers now have to confirm the venue by Wednesday and the most likely location is the Song Kheng Hai recreational ground – a rugby field in the old quarter of the city.
The ground is under the custody of Kuching South City Hall (MBKS) and Mujah said organisers have submitted a written request for the use of the field.
Sarawak non-governmental organisations have held events on the same field including the July 22 Sarawak independence gathering.

‘Stay away from Bersih 4 or face arrest’
KUCHING: Any individuals attempting to gather for the Bersih 4 rally at Padang Merdeka from 2pm on Aug 29 to 11.50pm on Aug 30 will be arrested under Section 20 of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.Kuching police chief ACP Roslan Bek Ahmad said his men can pick up any person without a warrant at the venue during that period as the state government has disallowed Bersih 4 organisers the use of Padang Merdeka for their gathering.
“This is nothing personal because we act according to the Act. We do not arrest anyone just because we enjoy doing it. So please comply with the regulations,” he told a press conference yesterday.
“We have informed the people the state government will not allow the Bersih 4.0 rally at Padang Merdeka, so people should not go there. Do not attend the rally at Padang Merdeka and get yourselves into trouble because it is against Section 15 of the Act.”

KUCHING, Aug 20 — The organiser of the Sarawak edition of Bersih 4 Kuching said today it will stick with Padang Merdeka here as its venue for its August 29 and 30 rally, despite the government’s refusal to award it a permit.
The organising committee’s representative Karen Shepperd said they had met with Kuching district police chief Assistant Commissioner (ACP) Roslan Bek Ahmad and claimed the latter had not objected but advised them to find an alternative venue.
“Padang Merdeka is a public place and the government’s responsibility is just to take care of the place,” she told reporters here, responding to a refusal by the government to permit the organisers to hold the gathering.
She said Bersih 4 Kuching will be held concurrently with those in Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu, from 2pm on August 29 until midnight on August 30.

State government says ‘no’ to organisers of Bersih 4.0 to hold rally in Padang Merdeka
KUCHING: The state government will not allow organisers of Bersih 4.0 to use Padang Merdeka as the venue for their gathering on Aug 29 and 30.
Kuching district police chief ACP Roslan Bek Ahmad said they have to find another location for their gathering.
The police will meet with the organisers today to discuss an alternative venue and conditions for the rally.
Being owners of Padang Merdeka, he said the state government and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) had the right to deny the organisers permission to use the field.
“There is no restriction to holding an assembly, though the organisers must ensure that participants adhere to certain terms and conditions. Pertaining to Bersih 4.0, as long as the owners of the premises give their consent, then we have no problem with the organising of the rally.
“They can even hold it for days if they wish to,” he told reporters after closing the Light Strike Force (LSF) first series 2015 in-service training at Tabuan Jaya police complex here yesterday.
Roslan explained that the organiser had submitted a form under Section 9 of the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) on Aug 12, to notify them of the planned twoday rally at Padang Merdeka.
The following day, the police put up notices at the proposed venue to notify the public and owners of surrounding premises about the event.
According to him, the Chief Minister’s Offi ce had informed in a letter dated Aug 14 its objection for Padang Merdeka to be used as a venue for the Bersih 4.0 rally which would also be held simultaneously in Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu.
He added that the same situation happened to the planned Bersih 4.0 rally at the nation’s capital.
