concert organisers want police to release findings on music festival deaths

KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – The Malaysian entertainment industry and concert organisers have called on the police to release their findings on the cause of the six deaths during the Future Music Festival Asia 2014 (FMFA).

This comes after The Star’s front-page report quoting the pathologist involved in the autopsies as saying that the victims died of heatstroke and not drug overdose as previously announced.

The association of Arts, Live, International Festivals and Events (ALIFE), in a statement, said it was “shocked” by the report, adding that the entire industry and not just the festival organisers had been kept in the dark.

It said an earlier claim that the victims died of drug overdose had portrayed the electronic dance music (EDM) genre in a bad light in Malaysia.

Ignorance on the part of the Police of the real cause of death, or a cover-up of their earlier error?

The alleged drug overdoses were cited as the reason for the cancellation of several concerts, including the Life In Colour in April 2014 and Thirst 2015: We Are All Stardust in April.

In March, Singapore cancelled a concert to be held at the Changi Exhibition Centre “because of serious concerns over drug abuse”.

Six deaths at Future Music Festival Asia actually caused by heatstroke

KUALA LUMPUR: For more than a year, everyone had been made to believe that the deaths of six people at the Future Music Festival Asia (FMFA) 2014 were due to drug overdose.

But post-mortem results issued two months after the deaths showed the cause to be heatstroke, with drugs playing a negligible role.

Two out of the 16 revellers brought to hospital in critical condition did not even have any trace of illegal substance, according to a pathologist involved in the case, contradicting police statements that all the deaths were linked to drugs.

Yet, the authorities did not make the results known and the “drug overdose deaths” was used as grounds to cancel several concerts here recently and one in Singapore.

University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) forensic pathology department head Prof Dr K. Nadesan said he had sent several detailed reports correcting the police statements.

“Generally, the police did not show much interest in the reports. Unfortunately, they made statements without proper scientific reasons, which is not the right way.

“They should have spoken to us and encouraged an inquest into the case because it is a matter of public interest to prevent similar incidents,” he told The Star.

Drug deaths did not happen in Selangor, state rep tells MCA’s Chew

SHAH ALAM, March 19 — Selangor has no jurisdiction over the six drug-related deaths at a recent music festival as it took place in Kuala Lumpur, a state executive councillor said today.

Datuk Teng Chang Kim said he was “shocked” that Barisan Nasional (BN) Kajang by-election candidate Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun had blamed the state government for the incident, which had occurred during the Future Music Festival Asia (FMFA) last week.

“Chew Mei Fun should learn her geography. Bukit Jalil is in Kuala Lumpur.

“The issuance for permits for the festival is under the purview of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL)… and as for the drugs, it is the police’s responsibility, not Selangor,” he told reporters here.

Chew blames Pakatan for music fest disaster

BN candidate for Kajang Chew Mei Fun has blamed the death of six people due to drug abuse in the recent Future Music Festival Asia (FMFA) in Kuala Lumpur to the Selangor government’s failure to curb social ills in the Pakatan Rakyat state.

“The recent deaths due to drug abuse at the FMFA reflect the failure of the Pakatan state government in managing social problems in their state.

“I regret that six innocent young lives have been lost at the music festival which was held at Bukit Jalil stadium, and I am also saddened by the fact that this could have been avoided if only Pakatan had been more effective in implementing their policies,” she said in a statement today.

“Nazri and Khairy cannot escape from the blame as Nazri launched the event last year, while Khairy agreed to Iqbal meeting him.

Nazri, KJ must answer for music festival disaster

Cutlure and Tourism Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz and Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar cannot absolve themselves of last Friday’s Future Music Festival Asia (FMFA) during which six youths died from drug overdose.

This is because the festival got the backing from the Culture and Tourism Ministry, in which an agency under the ministry, Malaysia’s Major Events, was involved, Seri Setia assemblyperson Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said today.

On Khairy’s part, Nik Nazmi said the Umno Youth leader was reported to have met with the organiser, Iqbal Ameer, who sought Khairy’s permission to use the outskirts of the Bukit Jalil National Stadium as the venue.

“Nazri and Khairy cannot escape from the blame as Nazri launched the event last year, while Khairy agreed to Iqbal meeting him.

“They should investigate the event that was organised there, since Khairy himself agreed to it then realised that the revellers in the electronic dance music or trance used drugs,” added Nik Nazmi, who is the PKR Seri Setia assemblyperson, and deputy Selangor assembly speaker.

Three-day event expected to attract some 85,000 fans, defying the haze that’s enveloped the city.

The unhealthy reading on the Air Pollutant Index did little to faze party-goers at Future Music Festival Asia 2014 last night.

The event dubbed as the biggest music festival in Southeast Asia kicked off its three-day party yesterday at Bukit Jalil National Stadium showgrounds.

Despite the worsening haze, day one of the event attracted thousands of fans. The event which started at 4pm featured performances by superstar DJ Deadmau5 alongside Adventure Club, R3hab and Will Sparks.

In light of the recent missing MH370 flight, a 12.8m-wide message wall has been set up for visitors to leave their hopeful thoughts and prayers.

Day two of the festival continues today with Dutch deejay Armin Van Buuren presenting his A State of Trance: 650 New Horizons Show.
