WILL SELANGOR & KUALA LUMPUR DECLARE A WATER EMERGENCY SOON?
*A Water Emergency is provided for under the Water Services Industry Act (Act 655) which came into force in 2006.
1. An emergency will be declared if the water level in a dam is below the critical level.
In Selangor, the critical level for the Sungai Selangor dam is 30%.
2. When an emergency comes into force, Section 56 of the Act empowers the Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water to prohibit or restrict both the general and specific use of water, or limit it to certain hours of the day.
3. Restrictions include a ban on the use of hose or sprinklers to water a private garden or wash cars.
4. The law states that those owning or using water supplies can be ordered to stop operating, with those failing to comply liable to be fined up to RM300,000 or jailed not more than three years, or both.

We will obey emergency ruling, say car wash owners

PETALING JAYA: If the Government declares a water emergency, car wash business owners in the Klang Valley say they will comply.
“We understand that water rationing is affecting everyone and if it has to be done to conserve water, then we will follow what the authorities say,” said Aizat Mohd Rosli.
Aizat, 29, said his car wash business in Kota Damansara had been closed for the past month and his company was relying on emergency reserves to pay for rental and the workers’ salary.
“We have reserves for up to three months. Hopefully, the Government will do something and it won’t last more than three months. If not, we’ll be in trouble,” he said.
Chan Khai Fatt, 45, who runs several car wash and polish services in the Klang Valley, said he only operated on days when there was water supply.
…
He added that they did not use water excessively and if a water emergency was declared, there was nothing they could do.

Strong winds and rain across Peninsular Malaysia yesterday have pushed away the haze in much of the Klang Valley, with only Banting recording an unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) of 123 at 6am today.
This is still an improvement from the hazardous air quality in Banting and Port Klang over the last two days, when the API breached the 300 mark, forcing authorities to close 131 schools in the Klang district on Friday.

Watering plants, washing cars may land you in trouble
PETALING JAYA: Car washing and plant watering may be banned soon if the water levels in the dams show no sign of improving over the next three weeks.
An official of the Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry (KeTTHA) told The Star that once a “water emergency” comes into effect, it would give its minister wide ranging powers to curb water wastage, both private and public.
“A water emergency would mean the law might be enforced to ban the use of hoses to water gardens and using potable water for cleaning cars,” the official said.
During a water emergency, Section 56 of the Water Services Industry Act 2006 empowers Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili to prohibit or restrict both the general and specific uses of water, or limit it to certain hours of the day.
Surcharges could also be applied on those who use above what is considered a reasonable quota.
