IGP, “She (Mariam Mokhtar) had better watch out or we will go after her.”

IGP Khalid Abu Bakar issued the warning to Mariam following the appearance of her column ‘One ideology, two reactions’ on a web news portal that highlighted the differing treatments accorded the late Malayan Communist Party leader Chin Peng and Siti Aishah Abdul Wahab, who was inducted into a communist cell in London in the late 1960s and was apparently held in bondage until recently rescued by British police.

How is the calling upon Khalid and the Malaysian government to show compassion to all Malaysians and not merely a select few seditious?

DETAINING MARIAM MOKHTAR: Gobind tells IGP – respond with INTELLECT!

Written by Gobind Singh Deo

GP Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar should refrain from threatening people who criticise him.

He has threatened Mariam Mokhtar with criminal prosecution, in particular sedition, for her post entitled ‘One ideology, two reactions’.

This is most unbecoming of Khalid. There is no need to resort to bullying people who criticise. He should also not abuse his position by issuing threats against them. As IGP he has no business to focus attacks on individuals who question him.

Being the IGP, he must be prepared to face criticism over the way in which he conducts himself and handles issues of interest to the public. If he cannot understand this, he should resign.

Khalid must stop the threats. If there are criticisms, he must focus on the issue  and instead respond with intellect.

Columnist Mariam Mokhtar defiant in face of top cop’s “threat”

A columnist vowed to continue giving her opinions despite “crude threats” from the Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar over her piece decrying Putrajaya’s treatment of two Malaysian-born communists.

Mariam Mokhtar said she felt that Khalid’s warning was a misguided attempt to silence the public rather than being aimed at her.

“I think the IGP was acting under orders,” she said in an email to The Malaysian Insider from London, where she is based.

IGP doesn’t understand laws of sedition

Mariam Mokhtar | December 1, 2013

FMT columnist Mariam Mokhtar responds to the IGP’s warning to her and thanks everyone for their support.

Thank you so much for your kind words of support and encouragement.

The Inspector General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said in a Bernama report of Saturday, Nov 30, that he had issued a warning to me. Neither he, nor any of his personnel have contacted me, by phone or by e-mail.

On Friday Nov 29, I was in the company of friends and colleagues throughout the day and then late into the night. They will vouch that no contact had been made by PDRM. Neither was any contact made on Saturday morning.

The IGP is promulgating another bare-faced lie to mislead readers and to harass Malaysians.

It is shameful that he has no understanding of the laws of sedition nor of the role of the government.

Thanks again for your support.

“Now Khalid has gone one step further by publicly threatening to arrest a political commentator known for her acerbic opinions,” Surendran said.

Surendran: IGP’s warning to columnist shocking

COMMENT PKR vice president N Surendran described the warning issued by the Inspector General of Police to columnist Mariam Mokhtar on the latter’s supposed inability to distinguish between militant and theoretical communists as “fantastic and shocking” and “ironical” in turn.

“This must be the first time that a widely read columnist has been singled out by the Inspector General of Police for a warning for having crossed an imaginary line,” asserted the MP for Padang Serai who two weeks ago was suspended from Parliament for six months after an altercation with the speaker.

Surendran (right), a lawyer renowned for human rights advocacy, said he found Khalid’s warning “shocking and fantastic because it must be the first time a widely followed writer has been singled out for a warning of possible arrest if she does not curb her pen.”

IGP warns FMT columnist

November 30, 2013

FMT columnist Mariam Mokhtar has been warned for writing articles that can be deemed seditious.

KOTA KINABALU: Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar has warned freemalaysiatoday.com’s columnist, Mariam Mokhtar, from writing articles that can be deemed seditious.

He was displeased with her article, entitled “One Ideology, Two Reactions”, published on the portal yesterday, in which she questioned the government’s discriminating treatment on the return of two Malaysian-born communist radicals — ashes of the deceased Malayan Communist Party leader Chin Peng from Bangkok, Thailand and Siti Aishah Abdul Wahab, who had been influenced by the political ideology and was allegedly held as a slave in London for 30 years.

“She (Mariam Mokhtar) had better watch out or we will go after her.

“This (article) is highly seditious. Don’t publish just to attract people to visit your website. That can also be an invitation for us (police) to come and apprehend you,” he told reporters after the opening of the Security and Public Order Seminar here today.

1 Response to IGP warns FMT columnist Mariam Mokhtar

  1. Paul Warren says:

Its wrong to criticise the IGP. I find many of the criticisms assume that he has the required intellect. What evidence have they that he has it that they should criticise him?
