Dozens of tents set up by campers at Padang Merbok to protest against alleged electoral fraud in the 13th general election were seized by the authorities at 4.30am today.
Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) chairperson Badrul Hisham Shaharin (left) – one of the organisers of the Occupy Padang Merbok event – said armed policemen and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) enforcement men cleared the field.
“We met with DBKL at 1am and gave an assurance that by 8am we will empty Padang Merbok, but DBKL at 4.30am with armed police grabbed the tents and used violence, kicked those who were asleep,’ Badrul Hisham tweeted this morning.
Reads a tweet by another of the organisers, ‘Asalkan Bukan Umno’ (ABU): “DBKL officers raided Padang Merbok escorted by the police. They attacked the tents, confiscated them and left in a hurry!”
…..
Campers showed tremendous self-restraint’
Anything But Umno (ABU) chief Haris Ibrahim when reached this afternoon said there were some 250 to 300 campers when the raid took place.
“It was dark and difficult to estimate the number of DBKL men, but I would say it was a large contingent of enforcement officers whose number appeared to at least equal the number of those camping there,” Haris said.
He said the DBKL men were accompanied by the police.
“I was also informed that some of the policemen were armed, though I did not personally see this,” he said.
Haris added that most of the campers were already awake prior to the raid as the group’s security personnel had alerted them as more and more DBKL men arrived at the camping site.
“Those that were camping exercised tremendous self-restraint. There was no retaliation or attempt to defend the tents. In short, we allowed the tents to be taken away.
“In fact, we withdrew from the tents to avoid any possible untoward incident,” Haris said, adding that the raid was over in some 10 minutes.
Asked if anyone was hurt the in the incident, he replied: “None from our side, but I don’t know if the DBKL men tripped on the tents and hurt themselves.”

Unsung heroes. I’d like to meet some of them one day. When lawyers volunteer, we make a lot of noise about it. But these arent lawyers. 😉
“We are from various hospitals and doctors, who formed this team since Bersih 2.0.” They were on standby today at Pg Merbok for the campers.
Do you know about ‘Medical Team’, a group of volunteer doctors and nurses formed to be on standby during rallies and protests since Bersih2?

23 Jun 2013 – 7.30pm
Alhamdulillah, Padang Merbok Berjaya Dipertahan Untuk Malam Kedua!

Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) has decided to slash the number of tents on Padang Merbok by half in what looks to be an attempt to compromise with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
The movement’s leader Badrul Hisham Shaharin told Malaysiakini that 40 tents have been taken down after the group was served a notice at 10am to vacate the area by noon.
As of 1.30pm, DBKL has not taken any action against the group, whom are still maintaining 50 tents.
Badrul Hisham said that SAMM is still discussing about what to do next.
“We’ll do things a thing at a time. Our problem is not with DBKL, but with the Election Commission. They must step down,” he said.

But the protesters themselves will stay on, declared Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia chairman Badrul Hisham Shahrul, who is also known as Chegu Bard.
“We do not want them to deviate the attention of others from the real issue here. So we will dismantle the tents in stages as requested in the notice,” said Chegu Bard.
He stressed that although the tent structures will be removed, the group of protestors will continue to be here until the first sitting of the 13th Parliament of Malaysia tomorrow. “Our stand remains the same. Our presence here is to put pressure against the Election Commission and the top two to quit,” said Chegu Bard.
He said the tents will be removed in stages as some of them belong to individuals while some belong to other non-governmental organisations.
He said political activist Haris Ibrahim had a discussion with enforcement officer Nasarudin Daharun on the matter.
“He has agreed to give us more time to allow us to remove the tents structure,” said Chegu Bard. – June 23, 2013.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) this morning issued a two-hour notice to a group that had camped at Padang Merbok overnight to vacate the site.
DBKL enforcement officers, met by reporters at the site, said the notice was issued at 10.15am ordering them to remove the tents they had erected there as they did not have the permission of the mayor to do so.
“We are giving them until 12.15pm and if they fail to do so, action will be taken,” he said.
Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) chairman Badrul Hisham Shahrin better known as Cikgu Bard said about 100 tents were erected at Padang Merbok after the Black 505 gathering there yesterday.
“Yesterday, 246 people camped here and we will act according to the situation depending on instructions from DBKL,” he said.

It’s believed a DBKL officer was isolated from the crowd at black 505 rally after he allegedly got into a scuffle with rally goers at Padang Merbok.

After playing host to the Black 505 rally, Padang Merbok is now hosting about 40 camping tents erected by activist to protest against the Election Commission (EC).
The move was initiated by Solidarity Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM), which aims to camp in the area until the EC’s seven members step down.
…..
However, they are concerned about whether the authorities and their opponents will allow them camp out that long.
“If we can stay here until tomorrow without interference, it would be a big achievement,” said SAMM propaganda director Edy Nor Redzuan.

Black 505: Now the worry is the Padang Merbok campsite, says Bar observer
The Black 505 rally camp that has been set up at Padang Merbok, Kuala Lumpur, is a worry to Bar Council representatives even though the rally itself was peaceful.
The co-chair of the human rights committee of the Council is concerned that what happened at Occupy Dataran will happen to SAMM (Suara Anak Muda Malaysia), the youth movement that has set up the camp. Andrew Khoo (pic) said he is worried that city hall authorities (DBKL) will evacuate and arrest campers like before.
His greatest concern is for the safety of both the DBKL authorities and SAMM should things get out of control.
“I’d like to urge the authorities to be a bit more accommodating,” he said. “There are by-laws but in this situatuon it would be better if they had a more generous approach to this in the name of democracy.”
He said he would like to see police continue to be as accommodating as they had been earlier in the day.

It’s not a Pakatan thing for some Padang Merbok campers
From appearances, these were young but hardy believers in Pakatan Rayat making a stand long after the Black 505 rally leaders and thousands of supporters had gone home. Not quite. Political loyalties were not what had driven some 200 students and youths to set up camp at Padang Merbok in Kuala Lumpur today with the attention of staying put until Monday.
Change is what they are after, even if there was risk in pitching tents at the site, an action unlikely to go down well with City Hall. “We have been ignored for far too long,” was a common refrain among them.
The Malaysian Insider spoke to a few of them who said they are fed-up with the government paying them lip service.

Earlier, the student activists were involved in a minor scuffle with City Hall enforcement officers who went in to pull down the tents.
The authorities had to back off after other protestors came to the aid of the students and youth.

Black 505: 1% pitch tent
The big picture with the Black 505 rally is that it came and went largely without incident, even though a fraction of those protestors have decided to make camp in Padang Merbok and test the patience of the authorities.
More than 20,000 protestors took to the streets of Kuala Lumpur from seven gathering points about noon and marched to Padang Merbok, chanting anti-BN slogans. But almost all of them left at about 6pm.
All but 1%.
About 200 protestors representing Solidarity Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) have decided not to leave.
How Malaysians record the history of this day depends on how they choose to interpret the above facts.
The critics will point to the 200 students and youth who have pitched about 40 tents on the field and plan to stay until Parliament convenes on Monday. Some will say this is occupation, like the ones that sparked changes abroad. Others will point to the big picture and 99% went home.
The focus at this moment is on the 1%. They have said they will camp it out until the 13th Parliament of Malaysia sits for the first time. The students are calling for the resignation of the Election Commission members.
They have called for re-enforcement, asking the public to bring them supplies as they begin their camp-out. More students and youth are expected to pitch tents there later tonight.
…..
There is a signboard on the field warning against the erection of any structure there. Those who violate this rule can be fined up to RM2,000 or jailed up to a year. – June 22, 2013.
