ALOR SETAR: Universiti Utara Malaysia’s (UUM) senior lecturer Dr Kamarul Zaman Yusoff has been banned from posting political material on his social media accounts.
It is learnt that he was told by the university management not to pen political thoughts on social media anymore.
He is with UUM’s College of Law, Government and International Studies.
Kamarul Zaman is known for being a firebrand critic of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
When contacted, he confirmed the ban and said he was called by UUM top brass on Wednesday after a report was lodged against him.
“Yes, I was warned not to repeat it. If there is another report, action will be taken against me,” he said.
In his Facebook status update on Wednesday, Kamarul Zaman said he did not have any problem with the university top brass or any other university management staff.
Kamarul Zaman became the talk of the town when Dr Mahathir turned up to sit among the audience at a forum before the 14th General Election where the former was invited as a guest speaker.
That time, Kamarul Zaman criticised Dr Mahathir for his old age and questioned how he could be fit enough to be the seventh prime minister. During a photo shoot at the forum, he was recorded on video being stared at in a bemused fashion by the statesman.
After Pakatan Harapan took over the government, Kamarul Zaman resigned from his position as the director of UUM’s Institute for Malaysian Political Analysis.
