Court strikes out lecturer’s defamation suit against DAP leaders

KUALA LUMPUR: The sessions court here today struck out a defamation suit brought by Universiti Utara Malaysia lecturer Kamarul Zaman Yusoff against seven DAP leaders as the trial judge’s orders were not complied with.

Lawyer Guok Ngek Seong, who appeared for Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng, said the judge also awarded RM5,000 in costs to his client.

Meanwhile, counsel Syahredzan Johan, who represented Lim Kit Siang, Chong Chieng Jen, Wong Kah Woh, Syerleena Abdul Rashid, Farid Mohd Azmi and Ariffin SM Omar, said they were awarded a total of RM3,000 in costs.

Syahredzan, however, said the judge made a ruling that Kamarul, represented by Harris Mohan, was at liberty to file a fresh suit.

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here today allowed Parit Buntar MP Mujahid Yusof Rawa’s application to strike out a RM5 million defamation suit brought against him by former Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) professor Kamarul Zaman Yusoff.

Mujahid filed the application on Oct 14 last year after Kamarul filed the suit on July 28.

The suit was based on an article by Mujahid which was subsequently published by two news portals in 2017.

Mujahid’s lawyer Noorazmir Zakaria said Judge Rozana Ali Yusoff allowed the application and ordered costs of RM5,000 to be paid to his client.

“The court agreed with the defendant’s (Mujahid’s) submission that the suit was an abuse of court process,” he said when contacted by FMT. The judge delivered her decision after a virtual hearing today.
